AMERICAN BOARD OF ORTHODONTICS ABO announces expanded time requirements for certification effective January 1, 1988 As a sequel to the announcement of the American Board of Orthodontics in March 1987, the Directors of the ABO have included the following provisions con- cerning the timing of examinations for certification. Under present requirements, a candidate becomes Board eligible as he completes Phase II of the exami- nation process (tihe written examination). The candidate shall be given five (5) years to complete the requirements of PhaseIII (case presentation and oral exam- ination). This 5-year period is to begin January 1 of the year following the successful completion of the written examina- tion (PhaseII). The above requirement continues to be in effect; however, in May 1987, the Board of Directors of the American Board of Orthodontics passed a resolution stipulating that the candidate, on successful completion of the written portion of the examination (Phase II), may specify in writing to the Executive Director of the ABO any date during the next 3 years (as of Jan- uary 1 of that year) on which the candidate wishes the 5-year allotted time for the completion of Phase III to begin. Thus, a candidate, following the successful standing of the written examination, may start the clock running on any of the succeeding 3 years and there- fore have an 8-year maximum time for completion of the examination (irrespective of the maximum of two l-year extensions permitted for extenuating cir- cumstances) . AMERICAN BOARD OF ORTHODONTICS

ABO announces expanded time requirements for certification effective January 1, 1988

As a sequel to the announcement of the American Board of Orthodontics in March 1987, the Directors of the ABO have included the following provisions con- cerning the timing of examinations for certification.

Under present requirements, a candidate becomes Board eligible as he completes Phase II of the exami- nation process (tihe written examination).

The candidate shall be given five (5) years to complete the requirements of Phase III (case presentation and oral exam- ination). This 5-year period is to begin January 1 of the year following the successful completion of the written examina- tion (Phase II).

The above requirement continues to be in effect; however, in May 1987, the Board of Directors of the American Board of Orthodontics passed a resolution stipulating that the candidate, on successful completion of the written portion of the examination (Phase II),

may specify in writing to the Executive Director of the ABO any date during the next 3 years (as of Jan- uary 1 of that year) on which the candidate wishes the 5-year allotted time for the completion of Phase III to begin. Thus, a candidate, following the successful standing of the written examination, may start the clock running on any of the succeeding 3 years and there- fore have an 8-year maximum time for completion of the examination (irrespective of the maximum of two l-year extensions permitted for extenuating cir- cumstances) .
