JILL & JILL BUCKING
Jill and Jill bucking is the same as Double Bucking except it consists of two women (Jills) working as a team. Don't let the term "Lumber Jill" fool you, these women train just as hard & are equally as determined as their male coun-terparts. The crowds are always amazed by the strength and determi-nation displayed by the lumber Jills. 2012 Winners

Citizen of the Year/Grand Marshall David C. Johnson
David C. Johnson was born
December 7, 1931 in Usk,
Washington, 60 miles north of
Spokane, into a family of 10
children. There were five boys
and five girls born to Marien
(Barnes) and Lawrence L.
Johnson. Four of the Johnson
children are still living: Jerry,
Darrell, Judy and David, all of
them living within ½ mile of
each other.
Dave’s family came to Clark
County in 1943 and moved to
the Amboy area in 1945. His father Lawrence, discovered the
Ape Caves in 1946 while cutting cedar poles in the area.
Dave was the Keen Teen Teenage Club President for three-
years at the Tum Tum Log Cabin in Chelatchie Prairie be-
tween the age of 15 – 17 and delivered the Columbian
Newspaper for three years between the ages of 13 – 15.
In 1949 – 1951 Dave ran the movie projectors at R Own Thea-
ter in Amboy for Harvey Johnson (no relation). The theater
was located in lower Amboy; in the park area across from
Nick’s Bar & Grill and burned down August 7, 1951 along with
a store and a café. For a time, he also worked in the store
next to the theater which was also
owned by Harvey Johnson as well as
Al & Ernie’s up the road.
In 1951, Dave graduated from Battle
Ground High School and went on to
spend ½ a year at Clark College play-
ing football. He stopped attending
Clark College when he found out it
was going to be the last year they
would have football.
Dave worked at Yale Dam from 1951
– 1951 and joined the Air Force in
May of 1952. After four years in the
military, in 1956, Dave went to work
for Ben A. Thomas Logging, working there until 1960. In the
years between 1959 – 1964, he also worked at Nick’s Tavern
on the weekends as well as filling in at Amboy Territorial Days
celebrations. There was a time, before working at Ben Tho-
mas Logging where Dave also worked for Cougar Logging as
Swift Dam logging the side-hill where the view point is now
located.
In 1958, David married Colleen Hardman from Kalama. They
had three children; Monty, Claudette and Jennifer; six grand-
children and three great grand-children. Colleen passed
away from Cancer in December 1990. In 1995, he married
Roberta Fouts of Yale. She had four children. Roberta passed
away in May 2006, also from Cancer.
Dave was a Volunteer Firefighter for Clark County Fire District
#10 of Amboy for 41 years, 14 of those years as Assistant
Chief, before retiring from the District in 2002. During that time
Dave also served as an EMT for 12 years and First Responder
for 15 years. Three of the 13
original Firefighters from
when the District first
formed in 1961 are still liv-
ing; David Johnson, Carl
Campbell and Lawrence
Frasier.
In the late 60’s Dave
served as Umpire-in-Chief
for the Battle Ground Little
League and as Area Rep-
resentative from Amboy/
Yacolt to Battle Ground. In
1970 he started the North
County Little League and
served its first president for three years. In 1968-1970 he was a
Scoutmaster and a member of the North Clark Lions Club,

but due to his time commitment to Little League and the Fire
Department, had to drop both.
Dave worked for International Paper Company in Chelatchie
Prairie from 1960 to 1980 and then went to work for Reynolds
Metal Company in Longview and
worked there until he retired in 1997.
Dave was a Territorial Days board
member from 1962 – 1967 and the MC
for the Amboy School PTA Carnival in
the 60’s and 70’s. He is currently a
member of the American Legion and
has been for 55 years. He is a 14 year
member of the VFW, and a 15 year
member of the North Clark Historical
Museum where he still volunteers at
the Museum for First Friday Open Mic
and on Saturday’s when the Museum
is open. He also is the first person
called when the Museum alarm goes off!
Dave has been a member of the Mt. Valley Grange #79 in
Amboy since 2000, a member of Pomona County Grange
since 2000, State Grange since 2001 and National Grange
since 2002. He served as Grange Superintendent for the
Clark County Fair and has been Santa Claus for the Grange
for the last seven years, performing all over the county with
Mrs. Claus taking pictures and delivering toys to under-
privileged children from Grange members; a tradition that
has been going on for several years. Santa also visits different
Grange parties, senior shut-ins and of course, the Haunted
Valley Red Hats. For the last 20-years, you have been able to
find Dave handing out coffee and cookies for the Fire De-
partment, Museum or more
currently, Pomona Grange, at
the Rest Area Coffee Breaks.
He also volunteers to help de-
liver Grange donated diction-
aries (Word for Thirds) to
Yacolt Primary School.
Dave has done Stand-Up
Comedy twice at the Clark
County Fair with the Grange
and eight of the last 12 years
at the State Grange Conven-
tions where he has placed
first in the talent portion four
times! Dave uses puppets in his routine which he started in
the spring of 2008 with his partner Georgia Goff. It was called
“Kids on the Block,” Powerful Puppetry. It was introduced
back East when bullying started to get out of hand in the
schools. As puppeteers, they worked in teams performing
skits. They spoke directly to the students, answering questions
and teaching skills to help the students stay safe, healthy and
happy. The children would talk to the puppets, something
they often would not do with the nurses, teachers and coun-
selors. There are approximately 13 sets of puppets which
cover Safety & Health Issues, Social Issues and Disability Issues
with the children. Dave and Georgia’s routine was on Cul-
tural Differences focusing on an African-American girl, Mel-
ody James and a Vietnamese-American boy called Nam
Nguyen who wants an American name because he is picked
on and Melody talks him out of it. Dave
and Georgia performed two shows on
the same day in July 2008 at Fort Van-
couver Park to approximately 150 foster
children, at a Battle Ground senior citi-
zen center and at several Granges be-
fore having to disband due to haying
season.
Dave still lives at the same location that
he and his first wife, Colleen, purchased
in 1958, and you can find him doing
Stand-up Comedy along with his seven
puppets (teen-age – adult size).
He is also a member of the Washington State Grange Camp-
ing Association and Historian for both the State Camping
Club and the local Fort Vancouver Camping Club #21.
The Amboy Territorial Days Celebration Board would like to
thank David C. Johnson for all of his service through the years
as we bestow the honor of, “Citizen of the Year” award to
him. Thank you David C. Johnson for all you do!

Help Stock the Shelves! Every day, individuals and families in our community
struggle to meet their basic nutritional needs. You can
make a difference by bringing items to donate during
Amboy Territorial Days.
This year the T-Days Committee has partnered with the
Amboy Church of the Nazarene to collect items for the
Amboy Area Emergency Food Bank. Food donations can
be made by placing foods in the collection barrels lo-
cated throughout the park. Most anything that you may
find in your pantry a can be donated. Non-perishable
food items like canned vegetables, canned soups, dried
beans, canned meats, rice,
pasta, peanut butter, flour,
corn meal, etc. can be do-
nated.
Please help support our com-
munity by donating healthy
items to our local food bank
and make a difference in
someone’s life.

WATERBALLING? Waterball is another word for firemen fun!!
With the 15-inch, 16 gauge steel
“ball,” usually painted yellow,
suspended 10 feet above the
teams on a wire/trolley system,
two teams try to push it past the
other team with fire hoses. The
intent of the competition is to
provide team participants with
the opportunity to practice using
nozzles and hose lines in order to
increase their fire fighting profi-
ciency. Generally, the more ex-
perienced firefighters will do bet-
ter because they have more ex-
perience operating a hose line.
For the first time, Amboy Territorial Days will hold a Water
Ball contest for guests, Friday night after the Queen’s
Coronation at 7:00pm. Be sure to get a good seat for the
fun and excitement. On a hot day there’s always the
chance to catch a cool mist from the off-spray of the
hoses.
The competition will take place at 7:00pm in Waser
Arena. The kids will have a lot of fun, it’s safe to be
around, it’s fun to watch and it’s FREE. Be sure to check-
out Water Balling, Friday night!

BULL OF THE WOODS Joe Zumstein, Jr
The Bull of the Woods for 2013, chosen by the Amboy Log Show
Committee, is Joe Zumstein Jr. Joe was born in Portland Oregon
on December 21st, 1930 and lived in St. Helens Oregon until 1934.
The family moved to Woodland Washington in 1934, and they
have lived there ever since.
Joe’s working career began in 1947 driv-
ing a milk truck for his uncle, Kenneth
Merz, delivering milk from Longview to the
Woodland area. The call of the timber
industry came soon thereafter when he
began hauling lumber for Hanley &
Hunter off of the Dubois Road near the
town of Ariel. The lumber was off-loaded
at the Port of Vancouver on the dock
where the Red Lion Inn at the Quay now
stands. Not only was he hauling lumber…
the mill was also cutting cross arms for the
electric lines which he was delivering to
Portland. The only glitch was the weigh
scales on Hwy 99 in Hazel Dell which hap-
pened to be open one day. The officer
told Joe he was too young to be driving
across state lines. Joe said, “That was the
end of that job”!

In 1950 Joe went to work hauling logs for Pop Feris out of Wood-
land. In 1951 the Korean War broke out and two things hap-
pened. Joe enlisted in Navy and also married Cheril Hess in
Woodland. Joe was stationed in Guam, San Diego, and Ta-
coma throughout his enlistment. Following discharge from the
Service in 1955, Joe went to work for Clarence Anrys Logging,
driving log truck.
During Joe’s time in the service his former employer Pop Feris
had passed away and his trucks were now up for sale. Wanting
to get out on his own Joe purchased one of those trucks; a gas
powered Mack, and landed a contract for the Columbia Ve-
neer Company, working on the old 800 line near Mt. St. Helens.
He also hauled some for the C.H. Anrys and also the logging
contractor, Marenakos (from Randle Washington), who built the
USFS 54 Road (Canyon Creek) and the USFS 25 Road to Randle.
When Marenakos finished those projects they returned to Randle
and bought 10 new trucks of their own ending Joe’s contract
with them. So Joe was looking for something to do in 1959 and
landed a salvage sale for Harry Balch, logging alder, up off the
Dubois Road. At that time he purchased a 977 Caterpillar Trax-
cavator with log forks to load the truck and there, Joe Zumstein
Logging was born. The first big break came when Joe landed a
contract salvaging pulp behind Wilson & Sutton. Production in-
creased to the point that another truck was needed.
Joe Zumstein Jr in an un-dated photo admiring a chainsaw.
Buck Creek Logging in Seattle had some used trucks to sell and
with a trip up north
Joe Zumstein Logging
acquired a second
truck. Joe continued
buying salvage sales
and logging small par-
cels until going to
work for Weyer-
haeuser Company in
1968. He then pur-
chased a brand new
BU-84 Skagit Yarder for
that job.
Shortly thereafter he
bought another BU-84 for a contract to log for International Pa-
per Company out of Chelatchie Prairie. As the company grew,
the need came for a shop which was constructed in 1969 in
Woodland next to many other logging contractors’ shops in the
area. Around 1970 Joe began to notice that it was time con-
suming and expensive to travel to Longview for supplies such as
chokers, line, chain saws, and other items needed for daily op-
eration. So he bought out Bert’s Saw Shop in Woodland and
with two partners, in 1971 Woodland Logging Supply was born.
Not only was it a full service rigging shop but it became one of
the first Stihl dealers in the Pacific Northwest. Joe started another
logging supply store in Carson Washington in 1987 but it was
closed in 1992 in the shadow of the Spotted Owl. Throughout
the 70’s and 80’s, Joe had up to 150 employees. Some of which
stayed with the company for over 30 years and others over 40
years. They operated at times, up to 7 logging sides along with
road construction crews for USFS (United States Forest Service)
sales and for various timber companies.
In 1978 Joe had a need for machines to log USFS “span” sales, so
two new 739 Skagit Yarders were purchased for contracts with
Pope and Talbot. That was over a one million dollar investment,
a lot of money back in 1979.
The eruption of Mt. St. Helens on May 18th, 1980 took a toll on the
company, the
same as many
other logging
companies and
loggers faced in
the after math of
that disaster. But
as all loggers do
Joe Zumstein
and his crew
rolled up their
sleeves and went to work as many did cleaning up the mess.
As the 80’s began, the International Paper Company mill in Am-
boy was shut down and due to the eruption of Mt. St. Helens the
International Paper Co. logging wrapped up throughout the mid
-80s. The eruption also put an end to the USFS “span” logging.
Weyerhaeuser had suffered huge losses of volume due to the
eruption and in 1988 at which time Joe ended 20 years of con-
tracting with them. Un-deterred the family pressed on, changing
with the times. As they faced the havoc of the spotted owl they
were forced to down-size and modernize their machines. Surviv-
ing both ‘The Blast’ and ‘The Spotted Owl’, Joe Zumstein Logging
kept building roads and contract logging, just on a smaller scale.
The BU-84s were still working, along with several shovels and a
small fleet of log trucks. Joe kept buying USFS sales that of
course had gone from big clear cuts of old growth timber to
thinning small second growth trees. But as times changed, Joe
Zumstein Logging also changed to evolve with the times and
outlast many other loggers in the area.
Then in 2008, log prices fell to an all-time low and fuel prices
soared, with modern machinery the fuel consumption is very
high. This lead to Joe and Cheril deciding to end a career and
company that had spanned six decades, providing family wage
jobs for many local families.
Joe and Cheril’s three sons were all active in the company. Dar-
ryl ran the road construction crews; Brent logged and did me-
chanical repairs as well as mechanical cutting, while Joel looked
after Woodland Logging Supply. Cheril and daughter-in-law,
Sharon, and others tirelessly took care of book keeping and pay-
roll for the company. It was a big job for a company of that size.
Woodland Logging Supply was later purchased by Joe’s grand-
son, Jerrad Nichols and his business partner Chuck Holt. The busi-
ness has since been re-named to Woodland Saw & Cycle. They
are still selling Stihl products and are located in the former Joe
Zumstein Logging shop in Woodland.
Congratulations Joe Zumstein, Jr. This years “Bull of the
Woods!”

This event just keeps growing and growing! This years racing will be held on Sunday, July 14th with “Time Trials” starting at 1:00pm and the actual racing beginning at 2:00pm. Be sure to get there early as these races draw a large crowd.
Lawnmower racing is a motorsport in which competitors race modified, ride-on lawnmowers. The original motor is retained, but the blades are removed for safety. The sport
attracts all ages and is usually entered into in a spirit of fun rather than extreme competitiveness, though many do take it quite seriously.
Since July 1998, Amboy Territorial Days Celebration has hosted its own races and each year it just keeps getting bigger and better.
All profits from admission go to help support the local volunteer fire department and the Territorial Days Community Park. A full list of guidelines can be found at the local Amboy Territorial Fire Station.
The Amboy Territorial Days Board of Directors announced its first Children’s Arts & Crafts Fair this year, a new feature for Territorial Days Celebration. Children 16 years of age and younger who reside in SW Washington are invited to submit a maximum of three pieces of work of their own original design. Jim Moreton, pastor of the Amboy Nazarene Church, proposed the idea of the Children’s Arts & Crafts Fair, and the fair committee hopes that the event will encourage children to develop artistic and utilitarian skills. There is no entry fee. The number and types of categories will depend on the number and types of entries received. First, second, and third place winners in each category will be decided by the number of tickets garnered by each piece of work. Tickets will be selling at the door for ten cents each. En-trants are welcome to drum up votes for their work. Suggested items for the Children’s Fair include:
Two dimensional artwork: drawings/paintings in oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel, pen & ink; prints, collage, photography, etc.
Fiber arts: quilts, basketry, clothing, needlework, weaving, rugs, etc.
Three dimensional artwork: pottery, glass, jewelry, egg art, leather, woodwork, furniture (small enough to be moved by one per-son), garden art, gourds, games, etc.
Writing: short stories (5 pages maximum), poems, or non-fiction articles, arranged on a backing for display so they can be read. Not accepted will be kits or commercially made items. Older persons may give oral instruction, but may not touch the craft item. Let’s see what kids can do! Rules and entry forms may be downloaded from http://www.tdays.org. Entries for the Children’s Arts & Crafts Fair must be brought to Portable Building B at Territorial Days Park Friday, July 12 between noon and 3PM. The fair will be open Saturday and Sunday, and awards distributed Sunday afternoon. Jane Poole
