Spring has sprung and summer is around the corner and can’t you tell?! There is so much activity going on every-

where. There are some fantastic local events and activities to do that staying indoors is no longer an option! Isn’t it amazing

what a bit of sunshine can do!

Speaking of sunshine, this month AVV brought a little bit of sunshine to Claire Forrests’ life after she won the fabulous

manicure competition with Heather at Body & Sole. She said that she never thought she would win and that she is very

much looking forward to it. Congratulations again Claire, I really am very jealous!! Also, a big thank you to all the people who entered the competition, it was a great success and I

will certainly look forward to running some more competitions in the future.

Voice HQ has been very busy this month developing plans for future issues. It is strange to think that just under 3 years ago, our little magazine was only going to 2500 homes and now we are delivering to over 10,000. We are working hard to develop this into a useful guide for

you and we are constantly looking for more advertisers, local clubs, societies and not-for profit organisations and community news to deliver through your door. So please keep

contributing, it’s a magazine developed by local people for local people, so please help us to support your community.

On that note, Mike sent me an e-mail this month to say that he had recently walked the

December walk and the path has been blocked around point 8 & 9. This is something we will be looking into but please be aware if you walk that walk again.

This month we have a great walk that takes in a couple of the local trails. There will be plenty of chances to let your dog off the lead but take care on roads and around livestock. 51/2 mile circular walk From Tibshelf Ponds via The Blackwell Trail This is a relatively gentle walk for you and your dog with the opportunity

to walk some of the fantastic trails in this area. The route will take around 3 hours. There are some hills and the terrain can be a little uneven so as usual

a good pair of boots are essential.

1. Park in the free car park at Tibshelf ponds, which can be accessed off Sunny Bank road, which leads off Shetland Road.

2. Exit the car park and turn right before taking the bridle path on your left beside a house. Follow the track until it meets the road crossing over to the pavement.

3. Turn left and pass under a bridge, after a short way take the signposted ‘Newton Link’ path on your right. At the end of the path cross over the road and turn right, heading into Newton.

4. At the roundabout turn right down Cragg Lane and walk for 1/2 a mile before taking Church Hill on your right. After about 30 meters take the footpath on your left, through a gate and walk down the path past Blackwell Church.

5. At the bottom of the path cross & turn right for 20 meters and then cross over the road to take the path through a gate. Carry on down the track until it brings you to the Blackwell Trail, turning left.

6. Walk along the trail past Hilcote. Before you reach the industrial estate at Huthwaite and immediately after passing through the second horse stile take the steps on your left.

7. Walk along the path by the stream , When you meet a fork take a left, then keeping left and cross the bridge over the stream and into the fields.

8. Turn right and walk along the outside of the field before crossing a stile and continuing along the outside of the next field.

9. Cross the stile on your right and cross the bridge. At the road cross over and turn left. When the road bends to the left take the bridleway on your right.

10. Cross the stiles and at the end of the track pass through a gate and walk on a short way before passing through another gate.

11. After the gate walk straight across the next field and cross a stile. Turn right, walking around the outside of the field. After the first corner of the field pass through a gap next to a tree and continue to your left around the outside of the next field.

12. Continue until you reach a stile on the second side of the field. Cross directly across the field on the path to reach a stile that will bring you onto the Silver Hill trail.

13. Turn left on the trail. Continue on under two bridges before reaching a signpost. Take the path on your right that leads to Tibshelf.

14. Walk along the path, keeping to the left as you meet a junction that has three choices. This path takes you through the Tibshelf Ponds area and onto the car park where you began.

Book Review - Quiet by Susan Cain

An unusual sort of book made its way into the bestseller charts last year which probably says quite a lot about how we like to ponder what makes us tick.

Quiet. The power of introverts in a world that can’t stop talking by Susan Cain (an introvert) aims to take a look at the way the Western world tends to value extroverts – the kids who speak up in class, the fun people at parties, the people who actually enjoy giving a talk to a roomful of people while introverts are often pushed towards feeling there’s something lacking or “wrong” with their desire for less stimulation.

As Susan Cain points out, introverts gave us the theory of relativity and the Apple computer so there’s no shortage of achievers amongst them. And It offers reassurance, for instance, that it’s okay to slope off to spend time by yourself, or be bored by small talk -

even that refusing invitations to a night out doesn’t make you weird or anti-social.

It’s not a psychology book, nor a self help book and because Cain is American, quite a few of the examples she uses relate to the

American experience; but nevertheless there’s a lot of insights to be drawn if you think you are introverted and want to understand yourself a bit better - or even if you’re the partner/parent/boss of an introverted person who frustrates you with their need for quiet downtime.

The best bits of the book are the less simplistic ideas – that introverted people can negotiate times when they “go for it” and present a different face to the world, but that they don’t have to feel guilty when they can’t or don’t want to turn it on. If you are an introvert, it’s the kind of book you could happily spend a few quiet hours with

In addition to the frequently changed, regular exhibitions, special events are held throughout the year, ranging from Fairs to Coffee Mornings. At the end of May, during the Spring Bank Holiday

weekend, (25th, 26th and 27th May, 2013), six artists will be demonstrating their skills and selling their work as part of the county wide Derbyshire Arts weekend. Tea, coffee and cake will be served in the Coffee Shop or Secret Garden, depending on your preference, the weather or both!

It is to be hoped that the weather will be fine enough to allow leisurely walks

through the garden to look at the specimen acer trees, to review the sculptures or inspect the new kitchen garden with its salads and herbs, designed by horticulturalist, James Peach.

With the new tax year in full flow, here are a few more FAQ’s from our friendly neighbourhood accountant …...

Q. My company has been trading since 1 March 2013, but my first sales invoices haven't been paid yet, so there is no cash available to reimburse me for the expenses I've incurred personally. Do I have to complete a P11D for 2012/13?

A. The annual form P11D reports expenses reimbursed to, and benefits in kind made available to the employees and directors. As you haven't been paid any expenses by the company, there is nothing to report on the form P11D. If you have any benefits in kind provided by the company such as a car a P11D would be required.

Q. I've heard about the great tax breaks available under the SEIS scheme. Is this something I can use for my business?

A. The seed enterprise investment scheme (SEIS) provides investors in small companies with 50% income tax relief, and an exemption from tax for 50% of the gains they reinvest in SEIS shares (for 2013/14). However, you can't use SEIS to invest in a company you control, as the investor and his associates (basically close relatives), must not own more than 30% of the company. The trade undertaken by the company must also be less than two years old, so to use SEIS the company has to be undertaking a new venture, and be a new clean company. If you have an idea for a

new business and you are willing to involve other investors, you may be able to use SEIS to fund that business. But please talk to us first, as there are a number of trades that can't use SEIS, and other conditions to meet.

Q. I am employed by my company M Ltd, and my wife's company T Ltd. M and T have completely separate trades and operate Independently. I currently take no salary from M Ltd and have a modest salary from T Ltd. However, HMRC have split my personal allowance 2/3 to the PAYE code issue to M Ltd and 1/3 to T Ltd. Can I get this changed, and if so how?

A. All you need to do is ring HMRC on the

number shown on your PAYE code notice and

ask them to change your PAYE codes. You will

need to have your NI number to hand, and

estimates as well as the expected level of

dividends, interest or other income to be

received in 2013/14.

Almost everyone who walks through the doors of our clinic comments on their own posture and how they feel they need to improve. It is a tricky one, because although we can do treatments to help with posture, it is largely up to you to do the exercises we prescribe and with so many people leading such hectic lives, fitting it all in can be difficult.

However, this can be made easier by creating habits such as the ‘cleaning teeth exercises’ or waiting for kettle to boil’ exercises, or – if your PC isn’t as quick as you would like then you may get a number of exercises done just waiting for it to boot up/download...or even just work…!

Help!

Many people who are in pain can gain relief by making some simple postural changes which can also help prevent it reoccurring. As osteopaths and physiotherapists we treat the area which is under strain then look at why this has occurred and with stretches and strengthening exercises can help ‘re-mould’ the body to be overall more balanced and less likely to break down in the future.

Also good is the ‘Alexander Technique’ which may seem detailed but it can make the difference between ongoing pain or not and demonstrates how we can often create or relieve our own discomforts and niggles which can lead onto further strain. Again, it is about creating habits which we get used to and then become normal –for instance, I would struggle to

clean my teeth without standing against a wall and doing a posture exercise, and over time that has meant I have gone from being what I initially thought was congenital ‘round shouldered’ to feeling happy wearing strapless clothes which expose my now ‘good-postured’ shoulders! Roll on summer!

Posture is not just about how you stand, but also about how you sit. Look at how long you may be slouched in your sofa – a few cushions can make the difference between back or neck ache or not. Those who spend more time driving or in an office environment often have unnecessary strain and as I observed recently – opticians are another example of people who could relieve the strain with some modifications to their working environment, and we have treated a number of dentists for the same reason. We spend so much time at work, it is a shame to have pain which can affect the rest of our life!

Having had a little time to reflect Gary has decided to share his thoughts on Margaret Thatcher! As a figure that divides opinion across the land I’m sure you will all have your own thoughts on what Gary has to say...

I didn't really want to touch this subject in this column, as the magazine should be apolitical, but I need to discuss the legacy of Mrs Thatcher. I'll try and steer clear of the extreme views from both sides and not dissect the Falklands war, the miner's strike, the unions or the poll tax. What I want to do is to try and articulate the emotion behind those who have an anti-Thatcher stance. The arguments are thirty years old, and I've been surprised that on both sides there are people who weren't even born holding very stringent views, but a free society entitles everyone to an opinion. When they came to power in 1979 The Conservatives implemented monetarism, which would reduce the deficit and inflation through controlling the money supply. The outcome of the policy was recession and unemployment, it is a matter of record that the Government never denied that this was the price of achieving lower inflation and future economic stability. Over the next few years, thousands of people were laid off In the Industrial areas of the Country in the steel works and the manufacturing industries. Many areas of the north, Wales and Scotland suffered devastation to their local economies and became wastelands without shops and services. It wasn't just young people who suffered; the job losses were across the generations and left families without hope,

prospects or dreams. Most of us realised that radical solutions were needed to reform the economy, the powerful unions and poor management, but we didn't get reform we got destruction. There was nothing offered to fill the gap, no help at all, only the mantra that free enterprise would create employment. This is where the anger comes from, we were left without a future, and not even the slightest inkling that things would get better. The Labour party for many reasons was unelectable and the unions did not hold the answer. Hard working Britons suddenly became 'the enemy within'. This all happened before the Miner's strike, which many people saw as their last chance to save their communities and futures, they failed, hope drained away and cynicism and hatred took hold. The BBC, Police, Press and Politicians were all seen to be untrustworthy and at war with their own people, it was a truly awful few years. I was there and part of it, but eventually took Tebbit's advice, got on my bike and moved to London, many people for whatever reason couldn't or wouldn't take that option. When aspiration and dignity have been stripped away from people do not be surprised if there is a reaction. For me this has re-opened raw memories, to those who would say 'get over it', well I can't and sadly, I doubt I ever will.

Top Tip Often pots and containers are sited near walls and windows but watch out that the

“protection” this offers does not mean they dry out. They’ll almost certainly need more watering than free standing pots.

It may be getting warmer and the temptation is to rush bedding plants into the ground to make up for the cold colourless Spring, but take care. Don’t plant straight from a garden

centre into your own garden until you’re sure the risk of frost is past – usually the end of May for most of us. It’s best to put them in a greenhouse or cold frame and allow out during warm times of day at first so they don’t get the “shock” of going from warm to cool. If you have planted early and it looks like there’s going to be frost, cover plants with fleece.

If you’ve got rambling roses a good way to encourage more flowers is to tie them in as near horizontal as possible. This

restricts the sap flow, which means more side shoots and more flowers.

Put supports in for plants such as peonies, delphiniums or oriental poppies to prevent them flopping as they get bigger. Hazel and birch twigs make an inexpensive substitute for plastic

supports and will fade into the border as the plants grow
