Hello and a warm welcome to the September edition of Amber Valley Voice.
Firstly, I think it is important to note that although this is the September edition of the magazine...I am renaming the editions to reflect the period that it covers. This is because it has caused some confusion over which month the magazines refers to and the truth is that it is actually both due to the delivery schedule being in the middle of the month….so perhaps a warm welcome to the Sept/Oct edition is more appropriate!!
It was a bit disappointing that the Party in the Park didn’t happen this month but the weather has had a lot to answer for over this turbulent ‘summer’. Still, dare I say it but we are now on the run up to Christmas, so there are loads of events coming up in the not too distant future...so if you want to promote any, please do not hesitate to contact me.
There are lots of new advertisers this month, so a warm welcome to all of those and don’t forget to take advantage of the voucher from Leabrooks gallery...worth it’s weight In gold!!
Happy Reading Emily

Once summer has crept away, albeit in disgrace this year, most of us will want to close the door, forget the trials and tribulations created by unruly weather and begin to think of the very real pleasures of home comforts. With this in mind Leabrooks Interiors is beginning to focus on the needs and interests which occupy us during Winter as well as the enjoyment of warm fires, cosy rooms and the fragrances of an inviting home. The Interiors section of the Gallery can provide you with items which will help you to create a warm environment in your own unique style: each of the products sold is specially selected for discerning customers.
There is a selection of small pieces of furniture, soft throws in the latest colours, designer cushions, wall hangings, exceptional home fragrances and much more. Recently a number of carefully selected, stylish, vintage items have been added to the range. Leabrooks Interiors reflects the commitment to quality evident throughout the Gallery – and has the same inspirational values.
It has style – for you!

Alfreton & District Branch Royal British Legion
David Wilson, Chairman, Alfreton and District Branch, royal British Legion
The Nation will soon commemorate Remembrance Sunday. This event always
takes place on the second Sunday in November, however this years second
Sunday falls on the 11th and this makes the occasion all the more poignant.
Alas time has taken its toll on the warriors who fought in that conflict and the
Second World Wars veterans are… shall we call them mature.
The First World War was termed as the “WAR TO END ALL WARS”. This
has proven to be an aspirational statement not a factual one, that’s why
between Sunday the 27th of October and 11th of November the annual Poppy
Appeal will be here again.
Those Veterans I spoke of earlier from WW2 are indeed mature, as to be 18
years of age at the start of that conflict, one would have to be over 90 now. So
that puts most of them out of the sprint relay team, thus they need our help.
The injured from our recent conflicts are just as injured as those who went
before them and with the advances in the medical treatment available today
more of our service personnel are surviving horrifying injuries that would have
resulted in death during previous conflicts.
These modern survivors also need help and support an for many years to come,
so please continue to give generously. As a Royal British Legion Caseworker I
go and see those who appeal for help and to those who are too proud to ask and
be assured that all donations are spent on the welfare of the ex-service commu-
nity.
Most people give generously with money - can I ask for some of you to give a
couple of hours to collect for this years appeal?
THE 11th HOUR OF THE 11TH DAY OF THE 11TH MONTH 1918
12 12
-1- Begin on Storth Lane, on the Broadmeadows Estate. Head south, passing be-neath the A38 bridge. Shortly afterwards take a well marked bridlepath on your right, up the bank.
-2- Follow the path until it bends to the left, taking you into open fields. Keep the fence on your right and head down the field to a gate. Turn left through the gate and onto a lane. Approximately 20 yards down the lane it bends round to the left. There are two paths on the right hand side. Take the second path that leads up to a new housing estate.
-3- At the Housing estate, continue straight ahead and onto Park Lane, passing Pinxton Church on your left. At the bottom of Park Lane cross Wharf Road and down Mill Lane. At the bottom of Mill Lane keep going until you reach a bungalow with large eagle statues on the gates. Immediately to the right of this bun-galow take a path that leads down the side.
-4- Cross a railway line and then a river bridge. Head up a hill into open fields. Car-ry on up the hill with the hedge on your right.
-5- If you wish to shorten the route keep your eyes peeled for a style on your right. Then continue straight ahead, with a dyke on your right until you reach a wooden gate on the right. Then go to instruction 9
-6- After passing a wind turbine you come to a tarmac lane. Turn left onto the lane and follow it around to the right up onto a main road. Turn right on the main road and con-tinue until you pass Selston Church. Soon after take the well marked footpath on the right.
This month we are bringing you a walk that begins in the Broadmeadows area and takes you through Pinxton to Selston. There will be plenty of opportunities to let your dogs off the lead but as always make sure to ensure their safety & abide by the country code at all times. Thank you to David and Jill Hallam from JH legal, who submitted this months walk. If you have favourite walk of your own why not share it with us by email at [email protected] or by calling Emily on 01773 604178 or 07891 639638.
4 Mile Circular Walk from Broadmeadows to Selston A really nice walk for you and your dog. A chance to see some of the parts of the beautiful local countryside you might otherwise miss. The route will take about 2 hours. It is fairly even but there are a few uphill sections. The terrain is mixed and a good pair of boots and long trousers are advised to tackle some muddy
sections and avoid stinging plants on the paths.

-7- After passing a wind turbine you come to a tarmac lane . Turn left onto the lane and follow it around to the right up onto a main road. Turn right on the main road and continue until you pass Selston Church. Soon after take the well marked footpath on the right.
-8- Carry on, crossing two stiles then follow a footpath sign pointing to the right and you will come to a kissing gate. After the gate go directly ahead, crossing the open field to reach a wooden gate at the other end.
-9- Go through the gate and head downhill. At the bottom there is a metal gate on the left. Turn right along a lane. At the end of the lane turn right onto another lane. Continue with the canal on your left. Pass through a metal gate and bear left onto a footpath keeping along side the canal. Until you reach a pond.
-10-There are two paths around the pond (Pinxton Wharf) both will bring you to the same point at the far end of the pond. Take a left here ,across a level crossing. At the top of the road, with a school on the left take a sharp left.
-11- Carry on along the road, passing Widermerpool road on you right and keep on straight up the lane. At the end, with a metal gate in front of you, turn right over a stile into a field. Keep the fence on your left and carry on up the hill.
-12-At the top the path narrows, with a fence on either side. Continue into another field , with the fence on your right. Go through a metal gate where the path has trees on either side. At the end of the path you will find yourself back at point 2

DVD Review - The Hunger Games (12)
Set in a disturbing future, one child of each sex are selected from each of the12 supressed Districts to compete in the Hunger Games for the amusement of the population of the wealthy Capitol. Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) volunteers to protect her sister and finds herself caught up in a fight to the death where there can be only one winner. Katniss soon finds out that where the good favour of a wealthy sponsor can make the difference between life and death, that she must learn to play the game as well as fight for her life if she is going to survive. There are some excellent performances, not least from Jennifer Lawrence, who seems destined for big things, but also Josh Hutchinson as Peeta Mellark, the male child from District 12. The Hunger Games is an engrossing film which looks and feels fantastic. The strong plot and excellent characters come together to create a world and story which captures your attention and imagination. The only disappointment being that you will have to wait until November 2013 for the next instalment.

The Olympics has been a fantastic testament to human endurance and achievement with world records being broken and personal best's being smashed. Unlike the seemingly unlim-ited boundaries of IT, for instance, sports also highlights physical limits and the Olympics was no exception in demonstrating the body's reaction to injury.
Whether you are a professional athlete or an amateur, injury will occur if the body is not ca-pable of what you are asking of it and apart from accidents, it commonly this means 'too much too soon', so effective, patient warm-ups and cool downs are paramount in all sports.
Another cause of injury is repeti-tive strain - golf is a good example of this. Repetitive actions especially coupled with poor technique, can overcome the bodies ability to com-pensate and can mean the differ-ence between being able to contin-ue or not. A good golf pro is essen-tial if you are prone to injury, as is a good osteopath, physiotherapist or chiropractor who, as well as patching you up, will help your body cope with the demands of repeated postures, especially if you are striving to improve.
Common golfing injuries are back pain- often in the pelvic joints as they try to absorb the rotation from the swing but also from bad hab-its such as not bending the knees when picking up the ball repeatedly or poor lifting technique when lifting a heavy bag or standing too hunched up when putting.
Shoulder, wrist and hand pain can also occur as can knee pain and there are various good golfing tips which can help- just look on our website in the Blog section. Exercises which can help prevent golf, or other sporting inju-ries are also available from physical therapists that specialise in treat sporting injuries and are tailor made to you.
So with one similarity highlighted; golfers-feel free to call yourselves athletes! At least you can justify your training!

Having nursed our plants through this soggy summer, now’s the time to start thinking about the new season.
Give next year’s hardy annuals a head start by sowing seed now. Flowers such as calendula, scabious and field
poppy can be sown direct into the ground for early flowering next year.
Dividing perennials now & planting into soil improved with organic matter and fertiliser will give their roots
time to get established before the cold sets in.
Prune fruit shrubs and trees as soon as they’ve finished fruiting. If you’re lucky enough to have a good crop of toms despite the lack of sunshine, cut away foliage to
allow air and sun in to the vines thus preventing rot and encouraging ripening.
Top Tip September into early October is the best time for planting daffodil,
crocus and grape hyacinth bulbs – the tulips can wait till November.
