MUSEUM OF AUSTRALIAN DEMOCRACY TRAVELLING EXHIBITIONS MOADOPH.GOV.AU/TRAVEX INDIGENOUS PROTOCOLS This guide has been developed to provide hosting venues with information relevant to Travelling Exhibitions from the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House. If you are considering hosting an exhibition from the Museum of Australian Democracy that has significant Indigenous content it is a good idea to consult with the Indigenous community in your area at an early stage, ie when the decision is being made to host the exhibition. PROTOCOLS You can be confident that the Museum of Australian Democracy has followed protocols diligently in the preparation of the exhibition. A record of the process is retained in the files of the exhibition: The material has been developed collaboratively where possible; Indigenous people have been consulted (where possible) about how their culture is represented, how the material is interpreted and displayed; Consent has been given, as some material might be ‘culturally sensitive’; Full and correct credit is presented on labels and interpretative panels; Language spelling has been checked; names have been approved for release and fees have been paid where necessary. You should consult with local groups or councils about appropriate styles of events, and suitable locations. Ensure that your venue has warnings situated at the entrance to the gallery. If you have multiple entrances the text should read: Please note: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander visitors are advised that this exhibition may contain images and voices of deceased persons. (Signage will be provided as part of the exhibition). WELCOME TO COUNTRY When arranging the opening, or other event, it is respectful to invite representatives of the local Indigenous community to participate and present a Welcome to Country. This is especially important if an Indigenous person connected to the exhibition and from different country will be in attendance. If a Welcome to Country is not possible, the most senior representative of your organisation in attendance should give an Acknowledgment of Country. MoAD suggests the following wording: I begin this morning/afternoon/evening by acknowledging the traditional owners of this land we are meeting on and pay my respects to their elders, past and present. Further information is available in Visual cultures: protocols for producing Indigenous Australian visual arts and craft, 2002, a protocol ratified by the industry and community bodies, and published by Australia Council.
