We sat in Room 304 as juniors, unknowing to the challenges of InDesign, the difference between serif and sans-serif fonts and the special bonds we would share with one another in one short year. Light flooded in through the blinds, and we pondered ideas for the next yearbook theme. Mrs. Kalkowski asked, “What do you think of when you hear 2017?”

Someone tentatively raised her hand and said, “I guess I first thought of Seventeen, like, the magazine.” There was an immediate reaction. The whole class loved the idea, but we continued brainstorming just in case. All the while, though, I couldn’t forget about the idea of creating a magazine-inspired yearbook.

The more I expanded on the theme, the better and better it got. It was so unique to not only the year 2017, but Marian itself. No co-ed school could get away with this. Furthermore, the theme 100 percent represented the lively and outgoing personality of the student body. I knew we couldn't pass up this opportunity, and the class agreed. Thus, 20seventeen yearbook was born.

We debated over the cover for a while, not wanting to use a single girl’s picture because the yearbook embodies all of our students. Everyone deserved to be our 20seventeen covergirl, and we wanted to share the stories of all 699 students. So we decided to use fashion sketches on the cover, but inside the yearbook we featured everyone’s individual story.

Everyone has a story.Crusaders face ups and downs, delights and disappointments, peaks and plunges.Challenges may knock us back while accomplishments push us forward.

Everyone has moments. From showing up tardy to winning the talent show.Forgetting homework to finishing an Honors Independent Research presentation.

Everyone has a purpose. Our Marian sisters enrich our stories. We will cry, and we will laugh. We will resent, and we will love.We will make mistakes, and we will learn from them. Everyone has a role. Each girl lives as the feature celebrity in her own magazine. Each student deserves a chance to be out of the ordinary, in the spotlight, on the cover.Everyone has a story, and all 699 are worthy of sharing.

The Will To Win Many faces of Will Ferrell win big in senior costume contest

( )“

Dressing up on Halloween is a beloved tradition at Marian. It gives students

the opportunity to showcase their creative skills by designing and wearing different costumes. There’s one group of dedicated friends whose creativity for costumes went above and beyond.

From sophomore to senior year, this group coordinated their costumes. Previously the group dressed as the Kardashian family and the cast of Sandlot. For their

final year, these seniors went all out by dressing as various Will Ferrell characters, complete with exact replicas of each character’s outfit and handheld cutouts of Will Ferrell faces. “My favorite part is looking so funny that I look at myself in the mirror throughout the day and crack myself up,” macythonen[17] said. Students couldn’t help but laugh when they saw the many faces of Will Ferrell walking down the hallway.

The seniors had the chance to

enter into the Senior Halloween Costume Contest, and a panel of teachers got the honor of deciding the winner. The competition was fierce. The eight girls went up against other groups, such as the Parks and Rec cast, the Addams family and New Girl characters.

After watching the movie The Witches, Mr. Peter Cunningham said the words “And in first place for this year’s costume contest is ... the Will Ferrell characters!” Cheering filled the gym, and the eight girls

jumped with joy. “I completely freaked out, got

up out of my cozy blanket in .0073 seconds and screamed at the top of my lungs. I thought that the other Will Ferrells would too, but no, it was just me looking like a crazy person in front of the entire school. No regrets, though! I was so shocked but so excited and proud,” racheljohnson[17] said.

The group will be remembered for their extraordinary effort and for giving everyone a laugh.

“Thematic elements throughout the book... like a magazine...This is autumn spread for Halloween.

-multiple entry points to a spread-random full bleed photos-many cut outs-consistent color bars with seasonal colors -slanted photo boxes-more posed photos than our normal yearbook because that is what you’d tend to see in Seventeen magazine.

We have discussed this theme and treatment of the title with an attorney. There is no copyright infringement, no profit is being made off of this educational product. All students at Marian purchase a yearbook, and their cost is the contract price. We are a nonprofit program. But - we always break even.

Thanks for considering our yearbook theme development package!
