Saint Joseph Cupertino
Some Franciscan saints have been known for the performance of special acts especially during prayer or meditation. Saint Joseph Cupertino, OFM Conv. was a member of the branch of the Franciscan family known as the Conventual friars. Joseph of Cupertino is most famous for levitating at prayer. Already as a child, Joseph showed a fondness for prayer. After a short career with the Capuchins, he joined the Conventual Franciscans. Following a brief assignment caring for the house (friary) mule, Joseph began his studies for the priesthood. Though studies were very difficult for him, Joseph gained a great deal of knowledge from prayer. He was ordained in 1628.
Joseph’s tendency to levitate during prayer was sometimes a cross; some people came to see this as much as they might have gone to a circus sideshow. Joseph’s gift led him to be humble, patient, and obedient, even though at times he was greatly tempted and felt forsaken by God. He fasted and wore iron chains for much of his life.
The friars transferred Joseph several times for his own good and for the good of the rest of the community. He was reported to and investigated by the Inquisition; the examiners exonerated him.
Joseph was canonized in 1767. In the investigation preceding the canonization, 70 incidents of levitation are recorded.
While levitation is an extraordinary sign of holiness, Joseph is also remembered for the ordinary signs he showed. He prayed even in times of inner darkness, and he lived out the Sermon on the Mount. He used his “unique possession”his free willto praise God and to serve God’s creation. Saint Joseph of
Cupertino is the Patron Saint of: Air Travelers, Astronauts and Pilots.
Peace & Good be with you, Fr. Luis

PARISHIONERS COMMENTS ON
THEIR MAY 17 EXPERIENCE
OF IFTAR
(breaking of the Ramadan
fast): *My impressions of the service were very favorable since the
Muslim people were so friendly to all who aHended…The
main speaker of the evening was an Imam from Tampa.
Speaking fluently and without any pauses he explained the
many similaries among Muslims, Jews and Chrisans.
*Expectaons in many ways. The Imam was very
educaonal. He answered several quesons, especially about
our differences…. Then we talked (at table) about our
similaries, like fasng and seasons and moon cycles, and
Mary. That intrigued me when the Imam talked about her.
*I truly never knew that the Muslim faith loves Mother Mary
as we do. The lengths that are taken during fasng is true
convicon to their faith. We need to find a way to share this
great experience and learning tool to let more people realize
that our Muslim friends are truly a lot like us in a lot of ways,
aJer all we are all God’s creaon.
*His (Imam) message to his people and guests to Intervene,
Intercept and Integrate, when they see something or
someone being unjustly treated was very good. We need to
respect each other regardless of faith, color or staon in life.
His insight into Unity and Diversity was very good.
