What is a Rainforest?Rainforests are very dense, warm and wet forests. They are very important in the ecology of the Earth as the plants of the rainforest generate much of the Earth’s oxygen.Scientists define rain forests as forests that receive more than 2,000 mm of rain evenly spread throughout the year.

Tropical Rain ForestsTropical rain forests are found in a belt around the equator, where temperatures and rainfall are very high all year round. There is very little variation between the seasons. They will have an even distribution of rainfall annually.Warm temperatures with less variation during the year. One of the most well known rainforests is the Amazon (South America)Two thirds of the Earth’s fresh water can be found there.

• World’s largest rainforest• 1.4 billion acres (2/3 the size of the continental

U.S.)• Accounts for 54% of Earth’s rainforest

• Spans 9 countries• Brazil (60%)• Peru (13%) • Columbia, Venezula, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana,

Suriname, French Guiana.• Average annual precipitation: 9 feet

• Wettest areas can receive up to 35 feet• Average temperature: 22-34°C

Amazon Rainforest: Flora & Fauna• More than half of the world's estimated ten

million species of plants, animals and insects live in tropical rainforests.• At least 40,000 plant species

• More than 3,000 fruits are found in the rainforest

• 70% of plants found to have anti-cancer properties are found only in the rainforest.

• Roughly 30% of the worlds animals• 90% are insects• 1,500 species of birds (1/3 of the world’s total)

• Over 400 species of mammals .• 165 types of amphibian .

• Extremely dense growth • One hectare (2.47 acres) of rainforest can contain over 750 types of trees and 1500 species of plants.

Amazon Rainforest: Peoples• Pre-colonial populations:

estimates vary widely• Between 2-9 million, of which at least 1 million were in Brazil.

• Current native population estimated at 250,000 - 350,000.

• There is some evidence that 50-60 Amazon tribes may be living in the depths of the Amazon rainforest that have never had contact with the outside world.

• The majority of the current population of the Amazon is located along the Amazon River in larger cities.

Amazon River • World’s 2nd longest river (Nile is 1st). 3,900 mi

(6,280 km) long.• Average depth of 46 meters.• Width ranges from 1 to 35 miles.• Starts in the mountains of Peru, flows through the

Amazon Rain Forest and empties out into the Atlantic Ocean through Brazil

• Formed by the junction of two Peruvian rivers, the Ucayali and the Maranon, which flow out of the Andes Mountains.

Amazon climateThere are warm temperatures at about 30 degrees, with a constanthumidity, that arrives at 90%. Rains take away some ground nutrients, on the contrary the lush vegetation produces abundant humus. When rains are particular abundant, rivers’ level increases of 10 meters, forests are completely flooded, and so we can find piranhas and very rare animals like the pink dolphin among trees.

JUSTIFICATIONIt’s a life spring of the planet, the source of so much of the air, water and weather we all depend on.

wildlife, smaller river tributaries, creeks and flooded forest areas , especially those that are farthest from people.

For all its size, the joys of the Amazon are mostly subtle: the ghostly roar of howler monkeys and vast variety of wildlife.

the remarkable variety of plant life.

the kindliness of riverside communities.

Climate Average annual temperature is 27ºC (80ºF). While the Amazon region is great to visit anytime of year, it is home to two distinct seasons:

FLOOD SEASON: Flood season occurs from March to August, when the water level rises to 15 meters (49 ft). This is the ideal moment to see the lush, flooded lands, known as igapó, in all of their glory.

DRY SEASON: Dry season occurs from September to February when the level of the rivers reaches its lowest point, crowding the fish together and making them easier to catch for both animal predators and fishermen.

Step 1 (45 minutes): Guests board a high-speed motor boat from Ceasa Harbor in Manaus en route to Careiro Village. During this stretch, the boat passes through the Meeting of the Waters (on the return voyage, the boat will instead travel through the Pirarucu Floating Dock).

Step 2 (1 hour): From Careiro Village, guests are then transported in a chartered van toward Maçarico River via BR 319, the main state road.

Step 3 (1 hour): From Maçarico River, guests board another high-speed motor boat en route to their final destination. On this last leg of the voyage, guests will enjoy their first glimpse of deep Amazon forest, passing through furos (passages through the flooded lands) and igarapés (streams).
