A MAZING G RACE July, 2018 Volume 63, Issue 7 Joseph and His Brothers: The Rest of the Story Thoughts for July 2018 – By Pastor Cathi Braasch Not quite ten months ago – Sunday, September 16 2017, to be exact – this Pastor preached about a family feud of, well, biblical proportions. A feud that started a generation earlier, with brothers turning on a brother, leaving him for dead and hoping he’d stay that way. It’s the account of Joseph, favorite son of Jacob, dreamer, and irritant to his older brothers who had come before him. Remember it from the Bible stories you learned as a little kid, the story I pray that you are teaching to your little ones. Re-read it in Genesis 37:2-50:26. And, if you’re one who likes to jump to the end, just cut to Genesis 50:15-21. For all the times we dream of, say, putting our siblings up for adoption on e-Bay, we’re hard-pressed to imagine leaving them for dead, faking a story to cover our actions, and letting a loved one be sold down the river for someone else’s evil purposes. Yet, that’s what hap- pened, starting when Father Jacob sent Joseph to check on his older brothers who were at sheep camp, tending the family flocks. Favorite young son Joey had God-given dreams that, when interpreted, sounded more cocky than prophetic. Bad enough that Joey was Papa’s favorite. The dreams of little brother being looked up to by his big brothers fueled sibling rival- ry and even brought a fatherly scolding. Long story short, the big brothers sell pesky little brother to slave traders for the going market rate, concoct a story that Joseph fell prey to wild beasts, and go home to tell Father Jacob the bad news. Joseph and His Brothers: The Rest of the Story Thoughts for July 2018 – By Pastor Cathi Braasch

Not quite ten months ago – Sunday, September 16 2017, to be exact – this Pastor preached about a family feud of, well, biblical proportions. A feud that started a generation earlier, with brothers turning on a brother, leaving him for dead and hoping he’d stay that way.

Yet, that’s what hap-pened, starting when Father Jacob sent Joseph to check on his older brothers who were at sheep camp, tending the family flocks. Joseph and his Brothers:

The Rest of the Story Genesis 50:14-21 – The Message

14-15 After burying his father, Joseph went back to Egypt. All his brothers who had come with him to bury his father returned with him. After the funeral, Joseph’s brothers talked among themselves: “What if Joseph is carrying a grudge and decides to pay us back for all the wrong we did him?” 16-17 So they sent Joseph a message, “Before his death, your father gave this command: Tell Jo-seph, ‘Forgive your brothers’ sin—all that wrongdoing. They did treat you very badly.’ Will you do it? Will you forgive the sins of the servants of

your father’s God?”

When Joseph received their mes-sage, he wept. 18 Then the brothers went in person to him, threw them-selves on the ground before him and said, “We’ll be your slaves.” 19-

21 Joseph replied, “Don’t be afraid. Do I act for God? Don’t you see, you planned evil against me but God used those same plans for good, as you see all around you right now—life for many people. Easy now, you have nothing to fear; I’ll take care of you and your children.” He reassured them, speaking with them heart-to-

heart.

Amazing Grace July, 2018

Joseph and His Brothers: The Rest of the Story (continued) Fast forward through Joseph’s days in Egypt, days in which he rose and fell, always con-

fident that the Lord was with him. Temptations to sin? False accusations and unjust imprison-ment? Opportunities to witness for the Lord? All these came again and again. Joseph’s faith and God-given gifts resulted in him becoming perhaps the first Secretary of Agriculture, the leader under Pharaoh who prepared Egypt to survive seven years of famine and still have enough to share with those in neighboring lands. Joseph used his gifts for the good of his cap-tors and even folks back in Canaan, the Promised Land, including those brothers who had put him into slave traders’ hands.

The reckoning comes, as it often does, around a death in the family. The family patriarch, Jacob, was reunited with Joseph. Jacob blessed all his sons, together, as heads of the twelve tribes of Israel, gave instructions for his burial, and breathed his last. After the funeral, Jo-seph’s brothers follow him to back to Egypt, even though they wondered where they stood with Joseph. Rather than risk a face-to-face confrontation on Joseph’s home ground, they send a message claiming to quote a deathbed wish from their father. Joseph took them at their word and, in forgiving them, Joseph spoke one of the most profound insights of Scripture: Joseph’s brothers meant what they did to him for evil, but God used it for good, that a great nation even they, who did this evil, would be saved. So don’t be afraid. Joseph said, because he would take care of them and their children. Thus, Joseph spoke with kindness and comforted those who had hurt him so badly. Joseph had a lot to forgive.

Jesus calls us to forgive like Joseph did and to keep on forgiving as He has forgiven us. Jesus said this to us from the Cross, where our evil put Him once, for all. In writing of this, Martin Luther reminds us:

“God can and does cause good to result from evil. Not that God wants evil to be done, not at all. But God’s mercy is so great even in our wickedness that He cannot do otherwise than forgive sin if the sinner sobs and begs His mercy. If this happens, the sinner should be forgiven. (see box)

People of Grace, beloved church: Whatever fractures face us – as families, communities, and even as the body of Christ – we who have been claimed by Jesus can take a lesson from Joseph.

Sometimes the fractures among families, friends and within congregations are tiny, like little hairline cracks that are easier to ignore than to repair. But when not addressed directly and appropriately, when the little things are left unrepaired, the hairline cracks in the body of Christ just get bigger and bigger until they cause our foundation to crumble.

Every week when we gather for worship, the people of Grace confess our sins, ask for God’s mercy, and exchange a sign of Christ’s peace with our fellow worshippers. Frankly, we need to do this every day. Examine ourselves, confess our sins, and beg for God’s mercy. When we have sinned against another or when another Christian brother or sister offends us, we have a griev-ance procedure given by Jesus himself need to go directly to that person and ask for forgiveness for Christ’s sake. As we learned in last weeks’ Gospel and the Great Grievance Procedure in Matthew 18:15-17. Whenever we’re offended by a brother or sister in Christ, we’re to go directly to that person first and seek repentance and reconciliation. When our brother or sister in Christ sincerely seeks our forgiveness, we are to show the mercy we have been shown. That’s God’s way, and it has been from the earliest days of the Church.

Here at Grace, despite the many, many good things the Lord has done for us, with us and through us, the church’s history has been marked with repeated seasons of contention between fellow believers as well as against her shepherds. It’s not new, it’s hap-pened in Christ’s church since early days (read 2 Corinthians chapters 10-13 for St. Paul’s account of church conflict and how to deal with it), and it is not how our Lord wants us to live.

Jesus calls us to forgive no less than Joseph did. Even more, Jesus calls us to turn from our sin and to keep on forgiving as He has forgiven us. While the sins of today might be different, the need for repentance, forgiveness, and change for the good is no less than it was in Joseph’s day. Joseph had a lot to forgive back in the days of Genesis. His brothers needed his forgiveness. In our day, we who have been saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ are called to be servants of Christ. We’re called to carry his grace and mercy and forgiveness into the world, and to have our lives changed for GOOD by the Holy Spirit.

Stay strong in faith like Joseph. When you are wrong, be ready to ask for forgiveness, not lightly and not simply to make nice, but with your whole, heavy heart. Once forgiven, go on to bear the fruits of repentance and change your ways for good. Be ready to forgive, and to “return to the Lord who is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love.” (Joel 2:13b, ESV) In Christ,

Pastor Cathi

“God can and does cause good to result from evil. Not that God wants evil to be done, not at all. But God’s mercy is so great even in our wickedness that He cannot do otherwise than forgive sin if the sin-ner sobs and begs His mercy. If this happens, the sinner should be forgiv-

en.

“So, do not sin rashly, just be-cause you are confident of obtaining God’s pardon. Rely on this pardon only when you are in despair. And here (when there is despair over sin), the pastor and ministers of the church should give assistance. And mercy, which is far greater than sin, should be

glorified.

[Luther’s Works, 8:330-32]

Lay Ministry/Witness Committee:

Three members (Linda Jenkins, Dawn Burch, Susan Ware), and CAC representative Connie Schneider were in attendance for our June Lay Witness Ministry meeting. Connie Schneider shared devotions from Mark 9:23 - "All things are possible to those who believe." Connie's devotional reading related the scripture to the bee. In reality the bee is too heavy to fly with its tiny wings and heavy body. But fly it does! This tiny crea-ture can be a lesson to us. When life seems impossible ,don't give up. Believe and keep flapping your wings. Connie Schneider shared minutes from the June newsletter. Mem-bers reported 6 visits with shut ins and 5 received communion. Linda Jenkins reported that she contacted Thrivent prior to applying for Thrivent action monies for fleece to make blankets for Veterans. She has learned that the $250.00 contributed by Thrivent will not cover the costs of materials needed to com-plete the project.

She also learned that Thrivent will only apply one card per project so we will be looking for other revenue sources. In other business, Linda Jenkins reported receiving 10 sets of the "Journey through Grief" books. She continues to look for the pew attendance notepads, and she will put a notice in the bulletin to see if there is a need to provide transportation to church services. Connie Schneider reported that the CAC is still working on membership. Due to the July 4th. holiday, Young at Heart will not meet in July. We will have our annual picnic in August in the shelter house. Following the picnic we will make a decision as to whether we will continue to schedule Young at Heart gatherings. Linda Jenkins will also send an email to those participating in the Hands of Hope project to see if there is interest in continuing this activity. We closed with all praying the Lord's Prayer. Our next meeting is scheduled for Sun-day, July 8th. during the Sunday School hour. Susan Ware will have devotions. Secretary, Susan Ware

Grace at Worship ... The general tone for worship in the season of Pen-tecost, particularly during the summer months, is that of growth and flourishing, and what is needed for Christ’s church to grow as He would have it. This season of the liturgical year is a time for fo-cusing on growing in discipleship, deepening our relationship with God, and faithful obedience in following Jesus Christ. The long season of green Sundays is often referred to as “Ordinary Time.” The word “ordinary” connotes the designation of Sundays by ordinal numbers rather than special

names.

Circle 1

Members of Circle 1 traveled to High Grounds in Sidney for our annual June "Eat Out" meeting. It was an afternoon of food, fun, and fellowship. Following our meal, Susan Ware provided cup-cakes for dessert and shared "Lessons from a Cupcake" by Julia Bettencourt. We laughed as members shared cupcake related statements from "A Cupcake Philosophy". We concluded that while cupcakes may bring momentary comfort and joy, those feel-ings are fleeting. Only God can bring true and lasting comfort and joy and offer hope in every situation. We ended our time to-gether with all praying the Lord's Prayer. Our next meeting will be on July 11th. Diana Reese will have the Bible study and Paula March will serve as hostess. Secretary, Susan Ware

Circle 3 Circle 3 met June 19 with 7 members answering roll call with a bible verse containing Son. Nancy McName led the Bible Study on “Gomer” taken from the book of Hosea. This was a story of God’s unconditional love for his children. Hosea & Gomer’s story is a tragedy filled with deceit & brokenness and also a reminder it is possible to forgive those who have hurt us. God keeps loving us, seeking us, and inviting us back into a relationship with Him. Gomer reminds us of our own failures, but also a story that re-flects God’s grace, patience & never –ending love. We pray for those who have wandered far from God & need to hear His invita-tion to return to him. Secretary & Treasurer reports were given. Treasury balance $113.03. There was no new business to be addressed. The lunch at the Alpha Center on June 16 went well with a good attendance. Meeting closed with Prayers. The host-ess, Traci Myers, served a refreshing delight of angel food cake topped with strawberries along with a frozen banana treat. Secretary Nancy McName

CHANGE THE WORLD: MI$$ION IN A BOTTLE - Please join us in supporting THE HOME OF PEACE Orphanage in Tanza-nia. Any spare change that you may have or gather at home could make a huge difference in the lives of chil-dren across the world.

There is a big bottle at the back of the church that we would love to fill up and give to our fellow Christians in the orphanage. Thank you for your continued support in this minis-try!

The work in Tanzania continues daily with school and other activities. I sent a surprise to the children with a talking video of myself. The reply from the children was enjoyed because it made me more real to them. I thought it would be good if those of you who sponsor children there could do the same thing. Keep your message simple do not use language that would be difficult to translate to them. Perez will get the message and will show the video to the child. I will give you Perez’s e-mail. I would not forget to thank those of you who support the mission there. It is much appreciated. There might others of you in the congregation who would like to start supporting the children and the workers for their everyday tasks. Without the workers there could not be an orphanage. When you give money it is important that you indicate on the church en-velope what amount goes for the orphanage. If you do not use a church envelope, please use a separate envelope and indicate on the envelope that it is for Tanzania

and the amount.

The 7 children are still in secondary school. The fee for the first year has been taken care of but the second year will be coming the first of the year. You know how time flies and that will be here before we know it, especially those of us who are older. If you have any questions about the children please do not hesitate to ask. All for now.

May God bless each one of you daily. Trust Him. Thanks for listening.
