What is Radiation?
In physics, radiation describesas process in which energetic
particles or waves travel
through a medium or space.
And there are two distincttypes of this. (ionization &
non-ionization)

What is the present risk?
On Saturday afternoon, an explosion rocked the number 1 reactor at the Daiichi plant, causing
a portion of a building to crumble and sending white smoke blowing into the air. On Sunday, a
state of emergency was also declared at the Onagawa plant after elevated levels of radiation
were detected, but levels later returned to normal.
Then on Monday (14 March) a second explosion occured at the Daiichi plant, this time in it's
number 3 reactor. If a meltdown takes place essentially the core of the reactor overheating
and damaging the fuel rods themselves it would be the first since the Chernobyl disaster in
1986 and the Three Mile Island incident in 1979.
Note: 1,858 Miles (2,990 Km) is the Philippines calculated distance from Japan-Tokyo and vice-
versa. There is no identified risk identified at present for GBPC staff.

Brief History of Incident
Fukushima

Okuma, Fukushima prefecture,
northern Japan. Japan's topgovernment spokesman says the
country has issued a state of
emergency at the nuclear power
plant after its cooling system
failed. There was no radiationleak. (AP Photo/Kyodo News)

Four-hundred millisieverts per hour can increase incidence of cancer among those exposed.
The figure on the left shows that only 50 microseieverts is the permissible radiation limit
exposure for laborers/individual exposed per year, except for medical purposes.

Associated Threat With Power Plant Radiation
Release of radioactivity from the nuclear-reactor equipment has been limited, so it does not
constitute a dire Threat to Philippines yet. But the meltdown situation could quickly change
everything, except if the emergency contingency plan made by the concerned facility will not work.
Excessive radiological exposure
Food and water chain can be contaminated by a high
concentration of radiation (ex. vegetables, nuts, dairy
products and others)
Radiological material can be use as RDD (Radiological
Dispersal Device) or otherwise known as Dirty Bomb
Affected area covered must be closedown (ex. plant willbe close, no jobs, no revenue, economic impact, etc.)

How To Detect Radiation
Radiation cannot be detected by a human sense, but please note thatthere are various devices: (Please see below some of the equipment
available on the market defending on their type and use)

Do We Have A Medicine For This?
We cannot discount any possibility that otherPeople or Pharmaceutical Company may
aggravate the situation in case someone has
been exposed to radiation to its MPL
(Minimum Permissible Limit). Medicines are
locally available, starting from simpledetoxifying medicine and even the so called
military medical corps medicine named
POTASSIUM IODATE TABLETS. Just note that
this drug is only safe to intake with competent
Doctors prescription.

How To Reduce Radiation Exposure?
Remember to limit the amount of radiation you are exposed to, think
about time, distance and shielding.
