2 ISSUE 23 AMANDELBULT TIMESOPINION

To prevent injuries or fatalities, we have to be safety orientated. Before you do anything, make

sure that it’s safe to work or have fun by removing possible hazards. Accidents and serious injuries can be prevented by implementing effective safety measures and reducing hazards. The decisions we make and the actions we take have consequences.

Peggy Mashabo, cashier at Amandelbult Recreation Club

Safety is not only important for today, it’s important to secure a future for ourselves and

for those we care about. Show you care by never relaxing your focus on safety. The only way to stay safe, is to be aware and educate yourself. That’s why it’s important to talk about safety with friends, family and colleagues. Together we can achieve Zero Harm!

Reinette Nell, journalist and sales representative at Platinum Bushvelder, Thabazimbi

TALK TO USThank you for joining us in putting on our safety thinking caps.

Safety is an ongoing process and a learning curve. You must act safely for your own, your family’s and your colleagues’ sake. Think before you do anything. Old habits die hard, but you have to apply safety in all that you do.

Helga van Tonder, employee benefits coordinator at Amandelbult Complex

Living a happy life and being safe go hand in hand. Never leave your kids unattended around swimming pools. Always keep a fire extinguisher close by and make sure your family and kids know what to do in case of emergency. Make a list of safety procedures and practice them with your kids and family.

Dirk Steenkamp, branch manager at BUCO Thabazimbi

We all want to feel safe and protected. Health and safety are key ingredients for success in any industry. At home, make sure that all your medical supplies and cleaning materials are out of reach of kids. Stand back and evaluate your safety protocols. Take steps to make your home a safer place.

Alézea Coertze, administrator at Northam Build it

As a mother, my number one priority is the safety of my children. I must look after myself at work and keep healthy, so that I can take proper care of my kids. To be a safety leader, you have to actively decide – every day – to make smart and safe choices. Think before you act!

Sibongile Mudau, explosives issuer at Amandelbult Complex’s Tumela Mine

Following safety protocols at work and at home is important because it save lives. Safety is not just a work thing. We need to actively seek ways to be safer in our daily lives. Following even basic safety procedures, like wearing your full personal protective equipment, can save your life.

Lungisile Mambi, gas operator at Amandelbult Complex’s Tumela Mine

If you are a parent, a safety orientated mindset is important. You must ensure that all gates and doors are kept locked. Practice a protocol with your children, so that they know what to do in case of emergency, and keep emergency numbers readily available. A tidy house is a safer house; keep cupboard doors closed and make sure that there are no sharp objects lying around.

Nimrod Sekgoka, hose operator at Amandelbult Complex’s Tumela Mine

In this day and age, you always have to be on your guard. If possible, install a security system at your home. If finances don’t allow that, ensure all your doors and windows lock and close properly. You can also erect razor wire around your property. Make sure you have security lights installed at all dark areas on your property.

Klaas Moretsele, security guard at Marshal Nights Security Services, Northam

Global Safety Day, celebrated on 29 October, supports Anglo American’s approach to safety. Every Platinum employee has the right to go home safely at the end of every day, but safety is just as important at home as at work. Do you agree?

Here’s what Amandelbult

Times’ readers had to say about

safety.

PRETTY IN PINK… The stadium was filled with women proudly supporting the cause that they believe in.

The theme of the walkathon was ‘walk on the right path that leads to wellness and zero tolerance for unsafe practices’. The women chose to participate in either a 5km or an 8km walk.

More than 3,000 women employees came together to highlight and put an end to abuse and discomfort in the workplace as well as to continue our journey to

transform from a predominantly male culture in mining.

WIMRTF’s deputy chairperson Zama Matsimbi said: “The WIM committees organised the walkathon to highlight the health, safety and security challenges that women face in the mining environment. As women we must not limit ourselves, but rather push ourselves to do more in a male

dominated industry!”WIM

committees across

Platinum are serious about ending male domination in the mining

industry.

One by one, they are removing the obstacles to ensure that women have a safer working environment – from boardroom to rock face. They aim to ensure that women are not just equal in the workplace but have the chance to be exceptional.

The day ended with an aerobics workout led by Vusi

6 ISSUE 23 AMANDELBULT TIMESCOMMUNITY

We commemorated Global Safety Day on 29 October as a

family, because we care about one another and want to keep each other safe – every day. That’s why we’re determined to go beyond Global Safety Day to make safety a way of life;

something we pass on to our children.

We’re passionate about putting safety first – not only at work, but in our everyday lives – and to promote it in our communities.

Safety isn’t a talent; it’s something all of us can master. Just as we teach our children to look before crossing the street or never to run with scissors, it’s important to pass on safety information to our communities.

You can be a community safety hero! Start by making

healthy lifestyle choices and playing your part in encouraging safe and healthy conditions at work and in your community.

Even the smallest safety gesture can make a huge difference. Why not wear your safety goggles while mowing the lawn at home? Not only could it prevent injury, but it could also start an essential conversation with your neighbours!

Together we can achieve Zero Harm.

Yours in health and safety!

Nothing is more important than the safety of our Anglo American Platinum family.

DEVELOPMENT TRUSTS FOCUS ON

Anglo American Platinum’s communities are benefiting from the R3.5 billion Lefa La Rona Trust which was funded by the sale, at a discount, of 2.3% shares in the company in December 2011.

BUILDING FARMING CAPACITY… Another Zenzele Itereleng project – helping five goat farmers in Taung to raise their farms to commercial levels.

Lefa La Rona is an umbrella trust for four community development

trusts and a non-profit company, Zenzele Itereleng, which serves Platinum’s key labour-sending areas in the Eastern Cape, Lesotho and Mozambique.

The community development trusts include Rustenburg, which serves the host communities of Platinum’s Rustenburg processing operations; Dikuno Tša Sechaba, which serves the Amandelbult Complex which is situated between Northam and Thabazimbi; Bohwa Bja Rena, which serves Twickenham Project which is near Burgersfort; and Ditholwana Tša Rena, which serves Mogalakwena Complex. The first dividends were transferred to Lefa La Rona in early 2012 and several community-based projects have been funded since then. These include the R20 million sanitation project for Mfidikwe village which was announced in the previous issue of Rustenburg Times. The project, which will improve the health, safety and dignity of community members, is being funded by the Rustenburg Community Development Trust.

The project is also creating part-time employment for community members in the short-term and long-term opportunities for local plumbers, for example, to provide maintenance. Local contractors are providing labour; and diesel and sundry

items for contractors will also be procured locally. Watch out for more articles on Dikuno Tša Sechaba in upcoming issues of Amandelbult Times.

Meanwhile projects under the auspices of the Zenzele Itereleng non-profit company have been aiding communities in Platinum’s labour-sending areas. These include building the capacity of goat farmers in Taung in collaboration with Thembalethu Development, also a non-profit company; and supporting Grace Vision, which provides free eye care in the rural communities in the OR Tambo district of the Eastern Cape. It also conducts free school outreach programmes, assisting learners to improve their eyesight.

BUILDING RESILIENT COMMUNITIES The Anglo American Social Way defines our governing framework for social performance and reflects evolving international standards and best practices.

To be productive, safe, responsible and sustainable our operations

must reside alongside thriving communities. It is truly wonderful that South Africa has a constitution that aims to protect the rights of our children and in particular the right to an education.

Education is viewed worldwide as a vehicle to rescue communities from the social ills of poverty. Our global icon Nelson Mandela reminds us about the importance of education with his famous quote: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

Being part of a key industry in South Africa, Anglo American Platinum believes that by partnering with

government and our host communities, we can make a real difference in education – now and into the future.

To inspire students to further their education for their most suited careers, Amandelbult Complex’s social performance team recently hosted a career expo for more than 700 school learners from its host communities on 21 September at the complex’s recreational club.

Learners were delighted to learn more about the career choices available to them and eagerly visited many stalls to find out as much as possible

about the mining industry and various career fields

like finance and human resources. Throughout

the day the attendees were entertained

by renowned comedian and programme director Mashabela ‘Papago’ Galane.

Human resources development (HRD) coordinator Sathiel Mataboge spoke about Platinum’s engineering learnerships; HRD coordinator Derrick Baloyi focused on safety; while HRD facilitator Mpho Phefo highlighted Platinum’s bursaries and internships available.

EDUCATION IS KEY… Community relations officer Matome Shishoka addressed the attendees.

QUARTERLY SAFETY COMPETITION WINNERS ANNOUNCED

COMMUNITY SAFETY COMPETITION

Amandelbult Complex hosts quarterly competitions to boost attendance and safety performance.

Amandelbult Complex is doing everything it can to keep its head

above water. The complex has lost 98 000m2 production, 49 000oz (platinum ounces) and R1.2 billion in revenue (year to date) due to absenteeism and sick leave abuse. So earlier this year it launched quarterly competitions to boost attendance and safety.

“High safety standards and attendance are pivotal for

Amandelbult Complex to move forward. It gives me great pleasure to congratulate the winners. They are truly safety leaders with a good attendance register,” said senior general manager Patrick Morutlwa.

“I look forward to January 2019 when I will congratulate two employees who will each win a Volkswagen Polo car,” Patrick added.

This quarter, 18 employees across Amandelbult Complex

were handsomely rewarded; in total R143 000 in cash prizes were awarded.

For employees to enter the competition, the criteria include: • No injury sustained for the

quarter.• No safety or compliance

related disciplinary cases. • 100% attendance; and

training and annual leave will be deemed as qualifying shifts.

Amandelbult Complex is also running a community safety competition. To enter, they need to send a 30-seconds long safety video clip or a brief to the complex’s communications department.

This quarter’s community winner is Daniel Ngobeni (39) who hails from Motlhabe Village in Selocha Section in the North West Province.

His safety entry tells a story about cautioning his community not to cut trees that surrounds the powerlines without authorization. He won himself a whopping R3,000 cash voucher. He could not hide his excitement when receiving his voucher, saying: “I am very happy. Thank you Anglo American Platinum for choosing my community safety story.”

MOVEMBER KE ENG?

“I also try to exercise at least three times a week, as this keeps me fi t and is a great time to think about my day.”

“Relaxing with your family and friends is also a great stress reliever and is very good for your general well-being.”

At Tshepo’s new house...

HEALTHY LIVING

Is walking to the taxi rank not enough?

Who knew moving house was such hard work! What’s your secret Tebogo?

You haven’t even broken a sweat!

What! I would die without fried chicken.

No man! You can eat fried chicken, but not too much.

Ha! Come on Tshepo, you are young! You should be able to move

this stuff easily.

No smoking, no drinking, no fried chicken! My life is over.

Don’t be silly, Tshepo. You won’t look back when you feel the benefi ts of healthy living.

I think I will start with giving up smoking; fried chicken will be the last thing. I am also going to

join you for Movember... if I can grow a mo.

Baby steps, T. Don’t try to do everything at once, but start somewhere.

Yes I do! Especially now that I need to fi ght off breast cancer. But even before I found out, I avoided

drugs, alcohol and cigarettes.

No! You need to get fi t, T. There

are so many benefi ts; you

will sleep better and be able to concentrate

more at work.

Movember is a male cancer awareness campaign that runs through November.

Men are encouraged to grow a moustache

or “mo” to raise awareness and funds.

Eish! I am exhausted. Where do you get the energy?

It’s all about balance. For example, I try to eat healthy food and

lots of fruit and vegetables.
