it’s the Season Want To Race? Then July Is Your Month By Joe Bromley

The AMA has sanctioned more motorsports events than any other sanctioning body in history. Our calendar includes thousands of local closed-course, off-road and track-racing events every year. Many of the same competitors who race in these local events also chase points in AMA Racing National Championship Series and attend our Grand Championships.

National Championship Series include multiple events in locations all over the country, with each event typically supported by a different club or promoter.

Grand Championships are a little different. They are stand-alone events that often last two or more days and crown AMA National Champions in disciplines that don’t have National Championship Series. Some offer classes for both motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles. Examples of our Grand Championships include the AMA Amateur National Motocross Championships, the AMA Racing Dirt Track Grand Championships, the AMA Racing Vintage Grand Championships, the AMA Racing Hillclimb Grand Championships, and the AMA Racing Road Race Grand Championships.

July and August will be very busy months for AMA Racing. We get started July 9-11 with the Vintage Grand Championships that run as part of AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio. Vintage racing is affordable, fun, unique, laid back and flat-out cool! It’s a great way to get started in racing—at any age. Some vintage racers grew up racing at AMA-sanctioned events, and others are just starting out. All are diehard enthusiasts who just want to come out and have a good time racing motorcycles.

The Road Race Grand Championships will take place July 12-14, just after the Vintage Grand Championships and at the same location, making for one heck of a motorcycling week. Top amateur roadracers will compete for the AMA Road Race Horizon Award, as well as Youth Rider of the Year. Our roadracers will ride in about 30 different classes, packing all three days full of action on the track.

Next up is the country’s premier amateur dirt-track event—the Dirt Track Grand Championships in Du Quoin, Ill., July 17-23. This a full week of TT, short-track, half-mile and mile racing. The event attracts the fastest amateur racers, from young hotshots poised to break into the pro ranks, to vet riders just out for bragging rights and fun. Whether you want to see tomorrow’s stars in action, or ride with them on the track, Du Quoin is the place to be.

That may sound like a lot of racing in July, but the calendar doesn’t slow down in August.

The month kicks off with the biggest AMA

amateur national championship event of them all, the AMA Amateur National Motocross Championships held at Loretta Lynns’ Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tenn. It runs from Aug. 2-7 and features the top young stars in motocross, all of whom made it through a two-tiered qualifying process to reach the prestigious national event.

Then, on Aug. 7-8, we have the AMA Racing Hillclimb Grand Championships, which will be hosted this year by the long-time AMA-sanctioned club, the Dayton Motorcycle Club.

All AMA racers should come out and participate in these events, and while I don’t play favorites, one worth plugging again—just because it’s so easy to get started at—is the AMA Racing Vintage Grand Championships.

Not only do you get to battle for national recognition in your class, but you do so against the backdrop of the granddaddy of vintage motorcycle events: AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days. There are classes for all skill levels with no need to invest thousands of dollars in a high-performance race machine. Chances are the old bike in your shed will do.

And on hand will be none other than legendary off-road racer Malcolm Smith, who is AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days’ grand marshal this year. In fact, we have racing stars supporting all our events in July. Dirt-track pro Bryan Smith is coming to the AMA Racing Dirt Track Grand Championships, and Superbike championship contender Larry Pegram will be at the AMA Racing Road Race Grand Championships. So, come on out, get first-hand advice from top riders and do some racing. I know how I’m spending my summer!

Dunlop has released another edition of its popular Legends posters, this one featuring the winningest AMA Supercross rider of all time, AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Jeremy McGrath. McGrath’s overall win

record stands big enough to fill a stadium: 72 race wins, two 125-class titles, seven Supercross championships and an outdoor Motocross title.

For 2010, Dunlop has commissioned the creation of a Jeremy McGrath Legends poster to benefit the Clayton Memorial Fund and the Road 2 Recovery Foundation. These efforts, which to date have raised more than $50,000, lend financial assistance to injured motorcycle racers—a most worthy means of supporting our sport.

There’s a new order at the top of the points chase in the Can-Am Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) Series this year. Three riders under 25 have laid claim to the series leader board in bold fashion, and they are the only competitors with a series race win all year.

FMF/Makita Suzuki’s Josh Strang, 22, has a solid hold on first, with four wins and 196 points. Second is Obermeyer/Am Pro/FMF Yamaha rider Charlie Mullins, 24, with three wins and 176 points. Third is FMF KTM’s Cory Buttrick, 19, with one win on the year and 154 points.

Defending GNCC champ Paul Whibley, 32, is the only veteran within 25 points of the trio. The AM Pro/FMF Yamaha rider is 3 points behind Buttrick in fourth.

Buttrick logged the most recent win, taking the overall victory in incredibly difficult conditions at

the John Penton GNCC in Millfield, Ohio.“I’m so happy,” Buttrick said after the race.

“This is the best feeling in the world, but it sure was nerve-wracking. I passed Strang on the last lap and as soon as I did I put the hammer down, but then I started worrying I would burn up all my energy. I was worried about a thousand things. I was wondering if I was even going to make it back around, but then I pulled it all together.”

Although the year kicked off with Strang dominating—he won the first four GNCCs and amassed a nearly 50-point lead over second place with less than half the season in the books—the hottest rider since has been Mullins.

Racing, in Park Hills, Mo. Then, on May 23, he took his third overall win at the Moose Racing Mountain Ridge Grand National Cross Country in Somerset, Pa.

In addition to his success in the GNCCs, Mullins leads the points race in the Rekluse/AMA National Enduro Championship Series ahead of Husaberg factory pilot and veteran racer Mike Lafferty.

Mullins credits his recent run of success to “the elimination of silly mistakes.”

“I’ve been getting a little smarter in my racing,” Mullins says. “I’m winning, and it’s great, but there will be a time when I won’t win, so I’m just going to keep working hard and take it a race at a time.”

Mullins says he’s learned patience.“I actually didn’t want to lead right away,”

reveals Mullins. “I was happy to follow someone and see the lines.”

Kendall Norman continued his dominance in the AMA/Kenda National Hare & Hound Championship Series in the seventh round on May 17 in Jericho, Utah, leading wire-to-wire to take his fourth win of the year. The JCR Honda rider took the lead and never looked back, completing the 115-mile course in just over three hours.

Running equally strong, FMF/KTM’s David Kamo had a good race despite suffering a pit-stop malfunction with his gas tank. Virtually matching Norman shift-for-shift, Kamo took second place just seconds behind the leader.

made his first appearance of the year on the podium. Passing local favorite T.J. Hannifin early on, Argubright held on to round out the podium, matching his 2009 career-best National overall finish.

The National Hare & Hound Championship enters its summer break with Norman in the lead for the series championships with 179 points. Kamo is second with 158, while Kawasaki’s Destry Abbott, now out with injury, is third, 42 points back.

Two Lucerne Valley, Calif., events remain on the calendar for the fall: Oct. 10 and Oct. 24. More information is at NationalHareAndHound.com.

The 2010 AMA Arenacross Series came to a close with the AMA Arenacross Grand Championships on Saturday, May 8. Held at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, Nev., following the Monster Energy AMA Supercross finale, the event featured the nation’s top amateur Arenacross racers.

AMA Racers should start preparing now for new competition sound rules that will become effective on Feb. 15, 2011.

Starting next season, motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles will need to meet sound limits of 96 decibels for two-strokes and 94 decibels for four-strokes. These are pre-race figures. Testing will be done at a specific RPM figure for each size bike. The current sound limit for closed-course amateur competition is 99 decibels.

“The new rules match what is currently being enforced in AMA Pro Motocross, Supercross and in FIM-sanctioned world-level competition,” says AMA Director of Racing Joe Bromley.

Bromley adds that AMA Racing is developing a rollout plan that includes awareness testing at specific events prior to the enforcement date.

As I approached my high school graduation, I was given the opportunity to complete a senior project. Luckily, there were no limits on what we could do.

About six months before my project started, my dad and I took possession of one complete, nearly operational 1974 CZ 250 and most of the components of a ’73, along with a bunch of miscellaneous parts. After seeing my dad race the ’74 at a few of the AMA District 36 (Northern California, Northwestern Nevada) cross country races in the vintage class (we ride modern bikes in that series as well), I knew what my senior project had to be.

With my dad as my mentor, I began the project with a paper on the history of motocross and its most influential riders. Then the real fun began. Starting with a dead motor, carb, stock frame, airbox, forks, wheels, bars, seat and stock

aluminum CZ tank, I got to work.

I started by sourcing the rest of the parts from a guy in Los Angeles. We were able to get the ignition parts we needed, exhaust, new

rear shocks, plastics, rubber parts, odds and ends, and everything to rebuild the motor. (You mean we have to split the cases, Dad?!) Just as my dad had said, the project followed a trend of one step forward, two steps back. Between rust removal, bearing greasing and replacing, engine rebuilding, and painting, my after-school leisure time all but disappeared.

Finally, as senior presentations and graduation loomed, I got it done. I had a lot of much-needed help from my dad, and I can’t thank him enough. He was also generous enough to finance the project for me. I got full marks on my project and the presentation I gave to community members.

Seeing people who knew nothing about motorcycles being genuinely interested and excited about my project was well worth the effort. It’s a beautiful bike now and almost completely stock. Unfortunately, being in college I barely have room in my tiny garage for my regular bike, and I haven’t had much time to get home and ride the CZ.

The project taught me a lot as a high school kid, about mechanics, history, responsibility, dedication and showmanship. I strongly encourage other young people to get involved in projects and cultures they wouldn’t normally be associated with. There is a whole world of cool stuff out there, and getting a different perspective on things (like the vintage perspective) can really open your eyes to the world’s possibilities and give you much-needed respect for the history and heritage of our sport.

Jack Penton, AMA Life Member and an inductee into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame, has joined the staff of your Association. Penton is now working full time to protect and promote motorcycling as the AMA director of operations.

In this role, Penton reports directly to AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman, and assists him in managing the day-to-day functions of the Association. Penton also has direct responsibility for the Hall of Fame.

“The threats to motorcycling are greater today than ever before,” Penton says. “Now is the time to secure the rights of motorcyclists in America, but to do so the AMA membership needs to grow many times over.

“The AMA has its priorities in order and has made the commitments needed to expand the organization,” he adds. “Motorcycle enthusiasts everywhere need to join us so that we can respond with strength to the forces that want to take away our rights as motorcyclists.”

Penton has more than 40 years of experience in the motorcycle industry. Early in his career he worked for Penton Imports developing Penton motorcycles, a brand founded by his father, AMA Hall of Famer John Penton. Later, he worked for Kawasaki Motors, Malcolm Smith Racing and KTM America. Most recently, Penton was employed by Tucker Rocky Distributing, a world leader in the distribution of motorcycle merchandise.

AMA Hires Jack PentonHall Of Fame ISDe Racer Serves As Director Of Operations

Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Josh Creamer is starting to pull away from the competition in the ITP/Moose Racing AMA ATV MX Championship, logging another win with a 1-1 moto score at Steel City in Delmont, Pa.

Creamer had his work cut out for him throughout the weekend, though, battling to the front in both motos with Dustin Wimmer, who’s second in the points chase.

“This was a hard fought weekend,” Creamer says. “I didn’t get the starts, but we pulled through and got the win.”

Today’s motorcyclists were yesterday’s kid riders. While that’s not a universal truth, it’s close to it—particularly when it comes to racing.

The folks at AMA-chartered club Lodi Cycle Bowl understand that, and they’ve taken a major step toward improving the future of dirt-track racing in their region.

For 2010, the Lodi Motorcycle Club has created a program to provide 12 free race entries for riders in the PeeWee Jr., PeeWee Sr., Mini Am, 60/65 and 80/85 classes. The free entries, tracked with a card that the kids get punched at each event, could potentially save a racing family hundreds of dollars in fees a year.

Creamer made the pass on Wimmer and then both riders began to pass toward the front. Shortly after halfway, Creamer had taken the lead, followed by Brown, Natalie, and Wimmer. It was not until the last lap, in the last straight before the finish line, that Wimmer was able to steal the 3rd spot from Natalie.

“We are definitely keeping it exciting between me and my teammate Josh Creamer,” Wimmer says. “I’m going to fight to be sure he doesn’t get too many points ahead of me. That makes for exciting racing.”

The club’s commitment goes beyond just the race fees. They’ve also worked with local bike shops to promote the free entries on the dealer floor. Eligible bikes at these dealerships now feature handlebar tags that advertise the benefit. One dealership, Stockton Honda Yamaha, will even pay for the AMA membership or AMA District 36 membership that a first-time racer will need to compete.

In addition, AMA District 36 is behind the effort with an additional break on district membership fees, and the San Francisco Motorcycle Club has donated $1,000 to further offset the fee costs incurred by first-time racers.

Taylor says the program is working.“We are definitely noticing a benefit of it,” he

says. “Hopefully, this is something that we can keep going and get more youngsters involved in the sport. It helps us all in the long run.”

Vintage racers are some of the most dedicated, enthusiastic motorcyclists in the world, and the AMA is proud to give these competitors the national recognition they deserve with the AMA Racing Vintage Grand Championships this July 9-11 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.

Here are the highlights:

• The AMA Racing Vintage Grand Championships crown vintage class national champions in motocross, hare scrambles, trials and road racing. The event also includes a round of the AMA Racing Vintage Dirt Track National Championship Series—a national series that determines AMA champions in vintage dirt track.

• A-class riders in motocross, hare scrambles, trials and road racing will compete for AMA Racing National No. 1 plates. Dirt-track racers will earn points toward national series awards.

• Designated A classes in each discipline earn points toward the event’s two highest honors: AMA Track Racing Vintage Grand Champion and AMA Off-Road Racing Vintage Grand Champion.

• All class champions will be invited to the end-of-year AMA Racing banquet at the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas on Sunday, Nov. 21, which honors all AMA Racing National Champions.

• Kids are welcome! Riders 12 and older can compete in motocross, off-road and dirt-track events at the AMA Racing Vintage Grand Championships. However, riders must be 14 or older to compete on a motorcycle with a displacement more than 250cc. (Youth riders are not permitted in the dirt-track Brakeless class.) Roadracers must be over 18.

The AMA Grand National Championship has a storied history in motorcycle competition. Awarded since 1954, some of the greatest racers in history have won this award—AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famers Kenny Roberts, Gary Nixon and Jay Springsteen have claimed the honor. A quality all these riders shared was versatility. They had to go fast on mile, half-mile, short-track and TT courses, as well as roadrace courses through 1985.

As a tribute to the prestigious and historic Grand National Championship, the AMA Racing Vintage Grand Championships include two awards for the best riders in off-road and track-racing disciplines: the AMA Vintage Off-Road Grand Champion and the AMA Vintage Track Racing Grand Champion.

One afternoon in the mid-1960s, a man walked into a Southern California motorcycle shop looking for someone to race an unproven motorcycle with a foreign-sounding name. Lucky for that man, he walked into the right shop and found the right racer. AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Malcolm Smith took Edison Dye’s offer, and their partnership would help establish the Husqvarna motorcycle brand as a force to be reckoned with in American off-road.

This year, with Husqvarna being honored as Marque of the Year at the at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, you can meet Malcolm and others who helped elevate the brand to prominence in America. The off-road superstar will sign autographs, sit in on seminars and meet fans all weekend during the event.

“Even today, decades after Malcolm Smith’s racing prime, his fan base rivals some of the top

names in the sport,” says AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman. “To anyone who has met him, the reason for that is clear: Malcolm Smith is synonymous with everything positive about motorcycling—fun, sportsmanship, and excitement. He will serve as an exceptional grand marshal at this year’s AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days as we celebrate the brand on which he became famous: Husqvarna.”

Smith says he’s looking forward to meeting fans and enjoying the activities himself at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days.

“I was last at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days three years ago and had a wonderful time,” Smith says. “I particularly liked walking around the large field where they sell all the old bike parts, buying a truckload and then figuring out how to get it all back to California. I like to ride new bikes, but I really enjoy

working on old motorcycles. I work on them every day.”

Smith remembers the day he was introduced to Husqvarna like it was yesterday.

“When Edison Dye brought me the bike, we laid out a track and some trail that went up into the hills,” Smith says. “When I came back from that ride, I said, ‘Mr. Dye, you have yourself a rider.’ The bike was so far ahead of anything else available at the time, and so reliable.”

As a racer, Smith gained fame for his accomplishments in the Baja 1000 and for his gold-medal-winning rides in the International Six Days Enduro competitions, but his notoriety reached well beyond the motorcycling community as the star of the influential 1970s motorcycle movie, “On Any Sunday.” The scenes of Smith play-riding with his buddies, which included popular actor Steve McQueen, showed people across the country just how fun motorcycling could be. The movie helped launch an explosion in the popularity of off-road motorcycling in America.

For the fifth consecutive year, the event returns to the nationally recognized Du Quoin State Fairgrounds in Du Quoin, Ill., where the fastest amateur dirt-trackers from around the country will compete for national titles.

Du Quoin has become one of our most popular venues. Racers experience some of the best short-

Today’s pros weren’t born fast. They were bred fast. And for many of them, that happened at the AMA Racing Dirt Track Grand Championships.

One such racer is AMA Pro Racing Grand National Championship contender Bryan Smith, who races for the Monster Energy Kawasaki Werner Springsteen Racing Team. Smith will be on hand as event honoree this year.

Joining Smith as a special guest will be AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Bill Werner. Werner-built bikes have logged more than 130 wins and 13 Grand National titles, and his presence offers a link to the storied history of dirt-track racing. Today, the legend tunes Smith’s Kawasaki KFX450 single and EX650 twin.

The event honoree is a highlight for competitors, who get to shake hands, take pictures, ask questions and just hang out with one of their heroes. Smith, who joins riders such as Kenny Coolbeth, JR Schnabel and Hall of Famer Chris Carr as recipients of the honor, said

that he’s looking forward to returning to the AMA Racing Dirt Track Grand Championships.

“The whole [Du Quoin] facility is nice,” Smith says. “I can’t think of a better place to have the Grand Championships. The indoor short track is nice, and the Mile, the way they prep it and the shape of it, is special. It’s one of the few places where I could hold my Kawasaki 650 wide open all the way around. There are not many tracks where you can do that.”

Springsteen Racing Team also includes Hall of Famer Jay Springsteen as test rider, appreciates the significance of the amateur championships.

“This event is the groundwork for the future pros of the sport—it’s where Bryan got his start,” Werner says. “It represents the youth of America getting involved in motorcycling, getting involved in racing. For amateur dirt-track racers in America, it’s the highlight of every summer.”

This year, the AMA Racing Dirt Track Grand Championships immediately precedes rounds seven and eight of the AMA Racing Vintage Dirt Track National Championship Series.

The AMA Racing Vintage Dirt Track National Championships Series awards points toward AMA Racing National Championships. At Du Quoin, racers will race on the famous Du Quoin Magic Mile on July 24 and the half-mile on July 25.

Larry Pegram, who races in AMA Pro Superbike on a Foremast Insurance Ducati, knows the value of an amateur championship. After all, he won 33 of them when he cut his teeth in amateur dirt-track.

On July 12-14, the dirt tracker turned roadracer will be on hand at the AMA Racing Road Race Grand Championships at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, to show America’s next top roadracers the ropes.

“It’s cool to have a stepping stone for the kids, and a safe place for older guys returning or just getting into the sport,” Pegram says. “An amateur system is the

backbone of racing, and it’s great to be a part of this and help build it from the ground up.”

As event honoree, Pegram, who will line up himself at Mid-Ohio for the July 16-18 Honda Super Cycle Weekend, will be available to sign autographs for fans and offer advice to racers.

The AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship at Loretta Lynn Ranch may only be one week—this year, Aug. 2 through Aug. 7—but for those who make the big show, it creates a lifetime of memories.

For most amateur motocross racers, there is no cooler experience than chasing an AMA Racing National No. 1 plate on the most storied amateur motocross track in the country, open to riders once a year at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tenn.

The AMA Amateur Motocross Nationals, promoted every year since 1982 by MX Sports, include much more than the world’s biggest amateur motocross event, however. There are live concerts, contests, golf cart parades, cookouts, and dozens of vendors selling everything from Cuban sandwiches to fresh knobby tires.

But there’s no question, despite all the ancillary activities, for one week every August, Loretta Lynn’s becomes a nation unto itself—a self-contained moto state that revolves around the sport of motocross. Here, the future of the sport makes a name for itself, while motocross’ greatest fans see tomorrow’s stars today.

QUALiFying 101

You must qualify earlier in the season to race in the AMA Amateur National Motocross Championships.

There’s a two-step qualifying process: the Area Qualifiers and the Regional Championships.

Regional Championships are held in the Northeast, Southeast, Mid-East, North Central, South Central, Northwest and Southwest. Each region has a maximum of eight Area Qualifiers.

Riders may attempt to qualify in as many Area Qualifiers, in as many regions, as they choose. However, if a rider qualifies for the Regional Championships, he or she must attend the Regional Championship in the region in which they qualified. The finishing positions guaranteed to advance to the Regional Championships from the Area Qualifiers vary and are listed in the advancement chart at MXSports.com.

The Regional Championship fields may be set for 2010, but now is the time to start planning for your assault on the 2011 qualifiers.

The nation’s top amateur hillclimbers on everything from 50cc minibikes to multi-cylinder, purpose-built hillclimb bikes will tackle one of the country’s most famous hills for AMA Racing National No. 1 plates: the Devil’s Staircase in Oregonia, Ohio.

The 2010 AMA Racing Hillclimb Grand Championships are being promoted this year by the Dayton Motorcycle Club on Aug. 7-8. The Devil’s Staircase has been one of the top stops on the AMA Pro Hillclimb Championship Series for more than six decades, and for 2010, it’s where AMA Amateur National Championships will be decided.

If the long climbs and uphill jumps at the AMA Racing Hillclimb Grand Championships aren’t your speed (see below), maybe you’d rather race across a perfectly flat dried lakebed at the International Speed Trials by BUB.

Held at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, this event determines both U.S. and World records in land-speed racing. Every summer, riders from everywhere come to this location to answer the age-old question: Who is the world’s fastest motorcyclist?

But while the purpose-built streamliners, which can hit speeds north of 350 mph, attract most of the attention, the event also draws participants chasing more down-to-earth goals. For example, you could go for the record in the 175cc MPS-P class (61.177 mph), 100cc M-AF class (35.926 mph) or 50cc M-AF class (74.752 mph).
