ALWAYS THERE FOR US
'She was a lovely mum, she was always there for us',
'He was a great dad, never made a fuss but he was always there for anyone who needed him.'
I've lost count of the number of times visiting a family and preparing a funeral that I've heard words like
these.
Time after time, the greatest tribute loved ones pay is that the person was 'always there for us'.
Those home visits and those wonderful warm tributes remind me, in a busy world, with diaries and
e-mails making more and more claims on us, how important it is for us to make space for those who
need us. Some people, perhaps because of their personalities, are more naturally able to be 'there for
others'; others of us perhaps need to work that bit harder to make sure that paper doesn't push people out.
Five minutes genuinely listening to someone, without having your mind on the next thing, or on what
you are going to say, can be so life-giving and affirming and so important for that person, who simply
needs you, at that moment, to be 'there for them.'
In a previous parish I was crossing the church car park and a car window was wound down and the
question came: 'Are you 'im wot's 'ere?' Because I could say yes to that, I was open and available to give
space to someone who needed at that moment to talk and to be genuinely listened to.
Perhaps it might seem odd to be reflecting on the epitaph which
others will write for us, but I wonder if you, like me, wouldn't at
all mind being remembered with affection as someone who was
'always there for us'.

SWINFORD PARISH COUNCIL NEIGHBOURHOOD
PLANNING
The legislation around local planning and development
is changing significantly with new legislation coming
into force. The Parish Council has been looking into the
potential impact on our village and is keen to engage
with villagers so that the interests of our community can
be protected.
Communities like Swinford have the option to draw up
a legally recognised Neighbourhood Plan (see article in
last Five Parishes Newsletter), this is a costly process, in
excess of £10,000, but may be one that the community
wishes to explore.
In order to carry out an initial feasibility study prior to a
wider consultation process the Parish Council wishes to
put together a small working group consisting of parish
councillors and 3 or 4 village residents. It would be to
everyone’s advantage to be able to recruit volunteers
with skills in and experience of project management,
local planning, development and legal frameworks. If
you have these skills and are willing to participate
please send a brief CV to Jan Throop, Clerk to Swinford
Parish Council, [email protected].
We need to act quickly so an early response would be
helpful.

SODS OR MAYBE EVEN...'SAOGLODS'!
SODS is currently busy preparing plans for the 2014
panto and would like to invite people to come along and
get involved!
Although we are called 'Swinford Operatic and Dra-
matic Society' we are very happy to involve people
throughout our locality and maybe even further be-
yond...hence SAOGLODS...'Swinford And Other Great
Locales Operatic and Dramatic Society'!
OK - that doesn't flow quite so well, but we would still
very much like to welcome some new members to
SODS and whether you are from South Kilworth,
Catthorpe, Shawell, or any of the other surrounding vil-
lages and beyond doesn't matter to us...anyone with a
passion for panto will be warmly received.
There are so many ways to get involved - make up, cho-
reography, acting, singing, props, scenery, dancing,
playing an instrument, lights, camera, action and most
of all fun!

It is a great chance to get to know people, and a fantas-
tic way to get experience for some of the youngsters out
there.
If you would like to join in with any element of the
2014 panto please do, you can contact SODS via the
Secretary Nina Mold on 01788 860917 or the Chairman
Hayward Underhill on 01788 860699.
Hope to see you soon!
'STOP PRESS'...
The annual SODS BBQ will be held this year on Satur-
day 23rd August at the Kilbane's house on Rugby Road
Swinford. It's the usual arrangement of bringing your
own food and drink along to the occasion with a side
dish or dessert for others to share. Exact time still to be
confirmed but all would be welcome - call either of the
numbers above for more information.

THANKS
Paula and I would like to thank everyone who made our
Ruby Wedding celebration on 6th July so special. Over
80 people from across the parishes joined us for tea and
cakes on the Rectory lawn, and the weather was good,
as promised! We were delighted to receive so many
cards and lovely gifts and so much love and affection
from so many people. It was a very special day for us
and we were thrilled to share it with you.

WELCOME
After the summer holidays, we shall be welcoming
Daira Vavere on placement with us, as part of her train-
ing for ordination in the Latvian Evangelical Lutheran
Church in Great Britain. Daira’s husband, Viesturs, is
the Lutheran pastor for Latvian congregations in this
part of the country. The family lives in Catthorpe and
are very much part of our local community. Our very
varied benefice will give Daira lots of opportunities to
experience Christian ministry and I shall be supervising
her placement with the support of Emma and Jane.
Daira will be doing a 2-year part-time course through
St. John’s, Nottingham. Please look out for Daira and
help her feel welcome among us, and keep her in your
prayers (and Viesturs!) during this period of training.

SWINFORD WEDNESDAY CLUB
We have all been quite industrious of late, whether it is
knitting for the family, making sewing repairs or knit-
ting more squares. We started June by joining the Moth-
ers' Union Ladies for a Garden Party, which everyone
enjoyed in spite of the cool, wet weather. We were all so
happy to welcome back Lindsey - her craft skills are
very inspiring and her bubbly personality is a real pick-
me-up.
Linda Reynolds also came to visit us this month. She
used to live in Fir Tree Lane and emigrated to Australia
several years ago to be near her family. She was on holi-
day in the UK and had been staying with Hazel Gardner.
They both came to join us one morning for tea and bis-
cuits. It was lovely to catch-up with Linda's new life and
she showed us photographs of her house, garden, life-
style and the family. She obviously has settled in really
well and has now taken Australian citizenship. She was
lucky with her weather in the UK and she explained that
she had brought an empty suitcase with her just so that
she could buy all those things that she missed, plus
shoes, clothes, etc. which were far more expensive in
Australia. Everyone moans from time to time about life
in the UK and it is always lovely to hear about people
settling into a new life abroad, but in our general discus-

sions, after Linda and Hazel had left, we all thought that
on balance - although it is lovely to see other parts of
the world - none of us would have considered emigra-
tion.
As always you have an open invitation to join us. We
meet in the small meeting room to the rear of the Village
Hall every Wednesday morning from 9.30 to 11.30am.
Do join us.

SWINFORD MOTHERS' UNION
Traditionally Swinford Mothers' Union do not meet in
July so this is just a reminder that the next meeting will
be Wednesday 13th August. We are going for a carvery
lunch to The Elms in Lutterworth. Some of our mem-
bers are not too keen on the carvery as they do not like
the 'help yourself - queuing' aspect. Please be assured
that this can be resolved, either one of us will collect
your choice of carvery and bring it to you; alternatively
you can choose a dish from the menu. Lifts have been
arranged and we shall be leaving at 12.15pm for a
12.30pm lunch.

SWINFORD WI
In June the Ladies of the WI had their garden visit. This
year it was to The Old Stables in Bruntingthorpe which
opens during the summer months as part of the National
Garden Scheme. We were made very welcome by
Gordon and Hilary Roberts who showed us around their
beautiful one acre garden. There was a vast range of
trees and shrubs to capture the imagination, and a rather
magnificent fig tree which had several of us in raptures.
After a lovely meander around we sat down to tea and a
rather delicious selection of cakes.
This year's garden party was held in July at Mary
McCulloch's house. We were joined by Rita Burn from
South Kilworth's WI. The members all brought along a
selection of sweet and savoury buffet goodies which
made for a rather sumptuous spread. Several of us had a
wander around Mary's beautiful garden, while the rest
of us sat about the patio and conservatory catching up
on local news and having a general natter. Everyone
agreed that it had been an enjoyable and informal eve-
ning.
There is no meeting in August. Our guest speaker in
September will be Lt. Col. Gerald Lesinski. He is join-

ing us to talk about his time in the Grenadier Guards
and more specifically his participation in the Trooping
of the Colour. All are welcome to join us on September
11th at 7.30 in the Parish Hall. It promises to be an
eventful evening.

Free Children's Arts & Crafts
Don't forget about our FREE arts and crafts workshops
held every Thursday 10.30am - 12.30pm in the Wheel
Room with Janet. There are different, themed activities
each week....so they are a great activity to keep the chil-
dren amused during the school holidays. It's also a great
excuse for a piece of cake or spot of lunch!

ALL SAINTS SWINFORD
We would like to thank all those who supported our fete,
either by helping out before and on the day, or by drop-
ping in and spending money. Over £1,200 was raised to
help us on our way towards getting the bells ringing out
again. Thank you, thank you.
SWINFORD SKIRTS
Skirts had a splendid evening on a narrow boat on 10th
July. It was a beautiful warm evening. The evening was
well supported so several of us walked along on the tow
path whilst the others cruised. After our delicious mid
way homemade picnic we swapped over and walked /
cruised back. Many thanks to Liz Morris and North Kil-
worth Marina for a wonderful evening.
The next meeting will take place on Thursday 7th Au-
gust. We shall be enjoying a leisurely bike ride followed
by a meal at The Head of Steam at Lilbourne. The meal
consists of lasagne, jacket potatoes, quiche, salads etc
and a choice of desserts. £10 per person. Please come
and join us for the meal if you don't fancy the bike ride
beforehand. Please contact Emma on 07931 926524 to
book your meal.
A date for your diary: Friday 19th December Catthorpe
Manor. ABBA tribute band and four course sit down
meal. £28 each. Please let me know if you and your
partner would like to join us.

M1 JUNCTION 19 IMPROVEMENT SCHEME PROJECT
UPDATE - AUGUST 2014
The M1 junction 19 improvement scheme is well under
way, and you have no doubt noticed the changes to the
junction since we started construction. There will be
many more changes as we progress.
To keep you updated on progress here is this month’s
round up of what is going on now and coming up in the
next month.
What’s happening on site?
• Construction of the new link between the M6 and
the A14 underneath the M1 is underway, with the
drilling and casting of concrete supports.
• We’ve started work on the River Avon bridleway
and construction of a new link road
August 2014
11
• Construction of the bridge supports for the flyovers
from the A14 to the M1 and the M6 to the M1 are
underway, with new concrete structures being cast
on-site.
• The new Shawell Lane road realignment is pro-
gressing well and will be ready for temporarily di-
verting M6 traffic in the autumn.
• The A14 to M1 embankment is growing and the
large earthwork is being prepared for the next stages
of construction.
Planned road closures & Footpaths
• Shawell Lane will be closed from the middle of
June to the middle of September this year to recon-
struct and improve the existing road. The closure
will be in place between the junction with the A5
and the village of Catthorpe. Access for residents
and landowners will be maintained, while traffic be-
tween Catthorpe and Shawell will be diverted via
the A5 and Gibbet Lane during this period.
• No right turn from Catthorpe Village to the dumb-
bell roundabout from 21st July to 8th August due to
realignment works.
• Swinford Road footpath open October 2016
• Rugby Road footpath open September 2016

as it progresses, please do not hesitate to contact the
project team.
