The project aims to merge the green into the blue through a series of vertical and horizontal elements and by drawing programs closer to the water edge. The major issue of the existing condition is the highly potential site, where the greenbelt meets the park between two bridges, is not enough celebrated by the people of Frankfurt. By designing Frankfurt am Main River Cruise and Tourism Development, it is hoped that the site could be used to its highest potential, to celebrate the junction where the green should meet the blue, as well as to engage more people closer to the Main River.

In large, the site is divided into four zones that span over 430 meters East to West. The first zone is the hub, located in the higher land from which visitors can see the entire development of the river cruise tourism. The second zone is the park, with elevated pathways surrounded by trees to bring back the feeling of the leafy greenbelt. The third zone is the water edge activities, with hot spa and bathing facilities to bring people directly in touch with the water. The water edge activities zone also has a wooden playing deck for kids to play around water fountains at the river edge. The last zone is the terminal, with retails, eating, and drinking places nearby that are integrated in a very playful space. All zones are united by a white bridge that spans throughout the entire development, which intersects with a lot of programs so the presence of the bridge creates a very lively and interesting architecture.

Overall, from the greenbelt, people will be directed into the hub through a series of rectangular frames, from where visitors are able to see the entire development of the site so they can choose the direction they want to continue the exploration to. The junction from the hub to the park plays a key role as a major path which then branches to the entire river cruise tourism development.

The concept of SWATHE warming hut is to use social and psychological warmth to promote physical warmth. This concept is demonstrated in a form of an interactive installation that allows users to wrap themselves with it. The structure adopts a circular form which mimics a wrapping technique that acts as a wind shield. Each hub allows the capacity of three individuals to work together to pull it up and be seated inside it. The red felt material choice and color radiates visual heat which is used to clad the structure. The members that fold in this structure is made out of wooden dowels that can be easily obtained, manufactured and assembled. The locking mechanism allows a varied desirable height of the shield that is catered towards sitting and standing. The hubs can act individually or in a group when placed on the frozen lake which allows an additional playful aspect.

The hut consists of three main parts: the platform, the bench, and the diagrid structure. The diagrid structure is made of an arrangement of one-inch wood dowels connected with bolts. Be-tween the wood dowels, there are attached two layers of cloth to keep the people warm. The entire diagrid structure can be fully col-lapsed or fully extended. When it is fully collapsed, it gives people the chance to go inside the circle. After, they can raise the wooden structure using the wood handle to adjust the height which they are most comfortable with. In its fully extended position, one can lock the structure so it stands firm. Erect-ed until 1.4 m-high, the hut gives the occupant a chance to interact with other people across the huts. This creates the social warmth that is the intent of this project, which to promote physical warmth.

FACADEDEVELOPMENT A group of two students are developing a detailed facade design of a community library for half a semester. In this project, the library has two main components, the L-shaped multifunction library and the tower-shaped exclusive library. This portfolio focuses on the tower part., which became my work focus during the very intense two months. The tower is clad by perforated metal panel which is operable on some parts in relation to the inside space quality. The project involves a lot of model making and detailing (wall section, blown-up details, plan, and the most important is how the facade itself works and its connectivity to the interior space.

The Idea StoreCommunity Library

The twenty-first century library located in the Little Portugal neighborhood aims to bring various peo-ple of different ages and economical statuses with-in the neighborhood together, in hopes of making them more involved and active socially and also politically in their community. The project also aims at creating a more vibrant and lively neighborhood by providing an abundance of public gathering spaces that are easily recognized and accessible. The design consists of two main occupancies, that are: library and CSI offices.

DANFORTH EASTSTREETCAR YARDS

Page 33: Alvin Yonatan Tanoko Portfolio

33Studio Project

This scheme Danforth East Streetcar Yards was conceived by a small group of Ryerson University Architectural Science students, in collaboration with the Danforth East Community Association (DECA), and faculty experts. This project aims to further Danforth East’s vibrant community endeavors, provide services for local residents and business owners, and to respect the heritage of the site. We hope that this will ignite an initiative to protect public interest on this valuable and historic site.

Danforth East Streetcar Yards will be a crucial revitalization project for the Danforth East community. The site holds tremendous value for the neighborhood, and should be developed to promote collective needs and values. This is not a new model for the City of Toronto—Wychwood Barns, Artscape projects, 401 Richmond, and Evergreen Brickworks have demonstrated that existing industrial or institutional buildings can become invaluable social and cultural facilities.

Our scheme for Danforth East Streetcar Yards sees the opportunity to create playful gathering spaces and bring vitality back to Danforth Avenue. On a site that has been directly tied to the growth and decline of the neighborhood, a new trajectory can be initiated.

This site should incorporate program which brings revenue, density, and innovation to Danforth East. The building becomes a mixer for different demographics, activities and collaborative projects, bringing latent community activities to the public realm.

APPROACH1. MINIMAL INTERVENTIONMinimal intervention has a two-fold benefit. Firstly, it allows for a light approach which strategically brings as much benefit onto the site as possible while maintaining the bones of a valuable heritage building. Secondly, by deploying a sustainable process of phytoremediation on the site, we provide a fantastic vegetated public space while allowing the site to rejuvenate naturally. 2. MIXED-USE BLOCKBy supplying a mixed-use block, the Danforth East Streetcar Yard becomes a vibrant community hub. Catering to different user groups and bringing spaces where these occupants may meet brings vitality to the Danforth Avenue strip—positively influencing community spaces, businesses, and bringing intellectual capital to the Danforth East neighborhood. The variety of users within this block will allow for a wider range of pedestrian activity at different times of day.

3. PUBLIC INTERESTThe crux of these efforts is to create a community space—where varying interests and collective goals mix. A site which contributes to a healthy neighborhood becomes a valuable amenity—one which people will want to protect and develop over time. This plan intentionally leaves room for growth; a back garden with temporary structures which can become anything once the soil is remediated, and large flexible open spaces wrapped by an envelope which references old industry and collective effort.

4. CAPITAL FUNDRAISINGWe suggest that the community consider the Build Toronto financing model for this site. Build Toronto lists its strategic priorities as “Engagement, Livable Neighborhoods, Sustainability, Employment and Transit-Oriented Development (Build Toronto.)” These values are in line with the development of the Danforth East Streetcar Yards as a community hub. A good living is not solely about giving enough light or good view to every units. More importantly, it is about having a good neighborhood; a neighborhood that grows and cares. This is where the idea of the ‘Third Place’ occurs. A third place becomes a welcoming and comfortable public facility where community can lose themselves and relax. The mixed-use residential located in Portlands, Toronto, is designed aiming to tie the community together by having shared leisure and communal rooms, integrated green space, and continuity inside out.

The music hall for holding a small house concert is located on the second floor so that the visitors get the feeling of an elevated big void in the house, which then also has a better view of the neighborhood.

The kitchen and the dinning room are located together, yet the dinning room is laid 800 cm lower then the kitchen. This gives the impression of an exclusive view of the lake and an intimate place for the family once one goes down through the stairs to the private dinning room.

One habit that the client has is that he often takes the visitors, friends, or family members up to the sky garden. Here, they might have a small chat and chill while enjoying the beautiful and astonishing view of downtown Toronto from a distance. The playfulness of the light give the visitors the feeling of a richer night experience, blending with the lights from the neighborhood.
