Filling the Spool with LineAlways take the line from the front of thedispenser, never the side.Wind firmly and evenly onto the spool,spreading the line with your fingers togive a smooth casting base.Never stretch a nylon monofilament ontoa spool; when it goes back to its originallength it will exert strong enoughcrushing action to damage your spool. Never allow loose coils to develop onyour spool through careless unevenwinding.Adopt the habit of applying light fingertension when retrieving line and spreadevenly over its bed.

Selecting a RodYour rod and reel outfit should be balancedso you can hold it comfortably over longperiods. A matched set, which has a point ofbalance where it’s held in the left hand, willgive you the most comfortable posture. ALVEY ‘BC XL’ SERIESNon-Reversing Drag ModelsThe non-reverse series of reels allowsline to be released under a preset pressurewhile the reel handle remains in astationary position. The BCV modelsincorporate the new Belleville PowerWasher that improves the range oftension settings available through thegraduated lever drag system. The positionof the lever on the front of the reel allowseasy adjustment while playing a fish aswell as a visual idea of drag pressure set.The small lever on the back of the reeloperates the cam activated on/offmechanism that allows you to disengagethe non-reverse action when required.

Setting the DragMake sure the drag activating lever on theback of the reel is in the ‘On’ position.Using a small spring balance to pull theline off the reel. Set the tension of thedrag to be approximately one third of thebreaking strain of your line by rotatingthe drag tensioning lever on the front ofthe reel. (Clockwise to increase tension.)It is better to have the drag set light as ashort sharp run from a large fish couldsnap the line on an over set drag.

The lever is easily adjusted while fightingthe fish, and the unique style of the Alveyreel allows extra drag pressure to be applieddirectly to the spool by using the palm ofyour hand against the bottom of the reel.Playing the fishOnce the fish has been hooked always keepa bend in the rod by holding it at an angle tothe fish. With the power of an Alvey reelyou are in control. Do not rush the fish.Allow the drag to tire the fish. Many timesthe fish is lost in the shore break. Keep asteady tension on your line, a bend in therod and ease the fish ashore.

Fish AlertWhen leaving the rod and reel unattended,activate the fish alert on the back of the reelby pushing the button in and up. If a fishtakes line a warning noise will be heard.Turn off the alert by pushing in and downon the button.MaintenanceUse Alvey reel lube for working spindlesetc. Then light machine oil on handle, indexmechanism and drag pawl. After each day’sfishing relieve the drag tension, wash offsalt and sand and lubricate as above beforestorage.
