LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Dear Alumni and Friends of Peoria Notre Dame,

Greetings to all of you! I am more than half way through my first year as president of Peoria Notre Dame High School. The time has just flown by with attending school activities, fundraising, meeting staff, and supporting families and alumni from our long history. It has been an exciting start, and I am look-ing forward to our bright future together.

Plans are continuing for the future development and completion of the athlet-ic facilities. Work has halted for the winter but will resume when the weather improves so that all the fields will be ready for use in 2014! An updated draw-ing of the facilities is on the opposite page.

You will read in this newsletter about our 150th Anniversary Celebration of secondary Catholic education in Peoria. Please accept my personal invitation to attend these events and know that I look forward to seeing you at them! I am very appreciative of the sacrifices my parents made so that I could receive the gift of a Catholic education, and it is something I am very passionate about. Catholic education is essential because it forms the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—and instills the Faith like no other formation can. The gift of our Catholic Faith was given by dedicated religious who began the Academy of St. Joseph which then grew into the Academy of Our Lady, Spalding Institute, Bergan, and now Peoria Notre Dame . We owe our history to the courageous and inspiring lay people and religious who wanted to form young people in the image and likeness of Christ. Catholic education is needed now more than ever in order to bring Christ’s love, peace, and joy to the world through the teaching of the Catholic Faith. We are blessed at Peoria Notre Dame to be able to offer the Faith amidst an excellent education!

I am excited to share that this coming fall, Peoria Notre Dame Catholic High School will welcome two Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The Sisters, whose main vocation is teaching and witnessing to the consecrated life of St. Dominic, will join another recently active order at Peoria Notre Dame, the Sisters of the Pierced Hearts of Jesus and Mary from Miami, Florida. Sister Sara and Sister Mary Amanda have been a welcome addition to our family at PND with their involvement in campus ministry, teaching theology, and as additional counselors for the students. I would be remiss if I did not also take this opportunity to congratulate our very own Sister Margaret Schulz SJ. She is a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet who founded Catholic education in Peoria. This fall she was honored with the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Medal for her outstanding service to the Church. The 2012 Conferral of Eccclesiastical Honors came at the start of the Year of Faith proclaimed by Pope Benedict XVI and served as the closing event for a jubilee year being celebrated by Bishop Jenky. Our high school, as well as our entire diocese, is graced with the lives of all our religious.

Catholic education in the Peoria area would not be the great gift it is without the continued generosity and kind support of our alumni, parents, faculty, staff, and friends. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

Our son Jacob was entering Peoria Notre Dame last year as a junior. There was the expected fear and trepidation of being a new student, but Peoria Notre Dame rose to the occa-sion. They welcomed our family with open arms. It is a great privilege to be part of this com-munity. The sensitivity and fellowship of the entire administration and staff eased our son’s transition.

LETTER FROM OUR PRINCIPALWe are a little over half way through the school year and it’s been a memorable one. This past fall we received our annual ACT scores and are happy to announce that our school composite score is at an all time high of 24.7. This is the highest score in the Peoria region and marks our third year of contin-ued academic growth while state and national averages have stayed the same. Also, this past Decem-ber we were notified by Apple that our school has been named as an Apple Distinguished School. This award honors top schools in the country that meet criteria for innovation, leadership and edu-cational excellence. Our implementation of the 1:1 MacBook pro-gram in 2009 and the enhanced curriculum opportunities over the last several made this designation possible.

Additionally our athletic programs have experienced a banner year. Our football program advanced to the state quarterfinals and our men’s soccer team clinched their third state champion-ship in five years. Additionally, a number of our women’s and men’s teams won conference championships. We were also blessed to break ground this past September on our new athletic fields.

But most of all we are proud of the character and faith of our young people. Our campus ministry program has made inroads in providing our students with opportunities to develop their faith and grow closer to Christ. A number of our students participated in our inaugural mission trip to Joplin, Missouri and a number of small group Bible studies and retreats have been planned.

Father Abram Ryan escorts seven Sisters of the Or-der of St. Joseph of Carondelet to Peoria to establish a Catholic school for girls.

The Academy of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, a boarding school that could house 100 girls and 16 sisters was built and opened.

The school was moved to a larger house at 205 N. Madison between Fayette and Hamilton.

John Lancaster Spalding becomes the first Bishop of Peoria. A joyous reception was held in the study hall of the Academy of Our Lady.

Spalding Institute opened its doors in September 1901 to 60 boys and 3 faculty members.

PAYING IT FORWARDImagine the ideal name for a big strong tough guy. Hercules or Samson may come to mind. How about Aloysius? Maybe not, but for 1969 Bergan gradu-ate Michael Maibach, Brother K. Aloysius, F.S.C. may have been the strongest man in the world. “As a grade school student I had a lack-luster attitude and the nuns told my parents I was not living up to my academic potential. Some of my pals and I had mischievous dispositions and I didn’t exactly graduate with honors from St. Philomena’s in 1965. I had always had female teachers and I think they did not bring out the best in ne. That all ended thanks to Brother Aloysius on my first day at Bergan,” said Mr. Maibach, who has become quite active in civic and charitable organizations. He serves on the Boards of Faith & Law, BritishAmericanBusiness, the Witherspoon Institute, the Tocqueville Forum at Georgetown University, and the Advisory Boards of the Institute of World Politics and the Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress.

Brother Aloysius stood well over six feet tall with a girth worthy of Goliath. The 1965-66 Ilium describes him as having a dynamic personality characteristic of the school’s tremendous spirit. “On my first day at Bergan I was in the lunch line with several friends from my grade school years,” said Mr. Maibach. “Brother Aloysius could hear us laughing, approached us and he picked me up by my tie. Bringing me up to his eye level he said, ‘ I heard about you from the Principle at St. Phil’s. I doubt you will last a week at Bergan.’ He then dropped me in a heap on the ground as he walked away. I remember saying to myself, ‘I’m going to love it here.’.”

Michael lasted more than that first week. His many high school accomplishments culminated four years later when the he was elected President of the Student Council and the faculty (I believe they decided this) named him “Mr. Bergan” for the 1968-69 school year. The Ilium said of him, “Mike’s induction into the National Honor Society confirmed his sound scholarship. While at Bergan, Mike was active in sports, chorus, and de-bate. He showed a great interest in student government and served on both his junior class board and student government all four years. He was President of the Stu-dent Council at Bergan and a member of the Mid-State Nine Student Council.”

“Secondary Catholic education and those Christian Brothers saved my life in a manner of speaking. I want to help make a Christian education available to others in the next generation,” said Mr. Maibach. To that end, three years ago he quietly established an annual schol-arship award to help a deserving eighth-grade gradu-ate of St. Patrick’s in Washington attend Peoria Notre Dame. (Mike’s sister has taught there for almost 30 years.) Named in honor of his parents, Charles and An-

nette Maibach, the scholarship helps defray the recipi-ent’s first year tuition costs. “I urge my fellow alums to consider creating this kind of scholarship through their own Catholic grade school in Peoria as a means of sup-porting Peoria Notre Dame. When I consider the future that my Catholic secondary education opened for me, it’s natural that this is the right thing for me to do,” said Mr. Maibach.

Brother Aloysius, Brother Jerome Roche, Brother Rob-ert Henzen and many other Bergan teachers changed the course of Michael Maibach’s future, setting him on a path that would lead him to become a seasoned profes-sional in global business diplomacy. He has had suc-cessful careers as the President of the European-Amer-ican Business Council, as a Vice President at the Intel Corporation, and as a young manager at Caterpillar. His financial support helps to pay the blessing of a Catholic high school education forward to the next generation of young people. “I hope other graduates of Peoria Catho-lic secondary education will join me in helping to support Peoria Notre Dame through a scholarship fund of some kind,” said Mr. Maibach.



CAMPUS MINISTRY NEWS

Keeping with our mission as a Catholic school to form the whole person--body, mind and spirit, Peoria Notre Dame strives to provide opportunities for students to have an authentic en-counter with Jesus Christ.

In the second year of campus ministry at PND, we have been blessed to welcome a new chaplain, Fr. Adam Stimpson, along with two Servants of the Pierced Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Sr. Sara Kowal and Sr. Mary Amanda Howard. These new faculty members have joined with Mr. John Donnelly and Miss Re-becca Sitte who continue their work with campus ministry for its second year.

This year, campus ministry has been responsible for the planning and implementation of days of recollection for each class, monthly rosaries, and House Masses. This year, we are also offering students the opportunity to join small discussion groups led by staff members to chat about different aspects of the faith. Currently, twelve staff members are leading discus-sions on topics including dating, friendship, social justice, and lives of the Saints. Campus ministry also looks forward to of-fering optional overnight retreats for upperclassmen this March and traveling to Miami to serve on a mission trip with students this summer. Campus ministry has also been active in culti-vating the virtues of Christian leadership in students through opportunities to serve as peer leaders on class retreats, lead school prayer, and dedicate hours of Christian service in the wider Peoria community.

Through the dedication of campus ministry efforts in conjunc-tion with the whole PND community to form the whole person in Christ, it is the goal of Peoria Notre Dame to form students for a lifetime of physical health, intellectual excellence, and Christian discipleship.

A new addition to the Academy was dedicated by Bishop Edmund Dunne.

Construction is completed on 12 large new class-rooms and science laboratories built adjacent to the original school. It is named “the Schlarman Annex” after Bishop Joseph H. Schlarman who provided the funding.

Spalding Institute opens a new state-of-the-art gym-nasium.

The Academy erected a new convent on Jackson Ave. which had two new large classrooms and a pop-ular student lounge.

The ground-breaking ceremony was held for a new 28-acre northside Peoria Catholic high school.

Dr. Gerald McShane was recognized as the 2012 Archbishop Fulton J Sheen Distinguished Alumnus of the Year and Mr. and Mrs. John (Gina) Wetzel were given the Peoria Notre Dame Foundation Award during an All School Mass held September 28, 2012, Homecoming week, for all of their many and continuous contributions.

FORMER MAYOR JIM MALOOFJames A. Maloof passed away Sat-urday, January 19, 2013. Jim was a 1937 graduate of Spalding Institute and was highly active in St. Jude Children’s Hospital along with being instrumental in creating some major fundraisers in the Peoria area to ben-efit the children of St. Jude. He was elected mayor of Peoria in 1985 and was re-elected for two consecutive terms. Jim had earned and received many awards and acknowledgements

during his 93 years, one of them being The Archbishop Fulton J Sheen Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2004. Jim continued to be a strong supporter of Catholic education and Peoria Notre Dame High School. May he rest in peace.

Scripture Reads...”Train up a child in the way he or she grows up and they will not depart from it.”

As a graduate of Spalding Institute Class of 1937, I recall the lesson of faith in our God, respect for our parents, clergy, nuns and community are the les-sons in life that have guided me through a lifetime of community involvement that I would not exchange for anything. I owe it all to the discipline and respect and love of God and our neighbor that I received in my Catholic education.

The two downtown Peoria schools merged into one administrative and academic unit to become the Academy of Our Lady/Spalding Institute.

Madison Street between the Academy and Spalding was permanently closed.

Bishop Edward O’Rourke celebrated the 125th anni-versary of Catholic education in Peoria by dedicating the new Madison Street Mall.

Academy of Our Lady/Spalding Institute and Bergan High School merge to become Peoria Notre Dame, a name voted for by the students.

Peoria Notre Dame plays the last game in the Spald-ing gym. The building was razed to allow construc-tion of the new Sheen Pastoral Center.

Peoria Bishop Daniel R. Jenky led the groundbreak-ing ceremony for a new Peoria Notre Dame sports complex. Future plans of the 71.5 acre site include a new high school.

EVENTS CELEBRATING 150 YEARS OF CATHOLIC EDUCATIONThis spring we will celebrate the 150th year of Catholic Secondary Education in the Greater Peoria area. This coming year also marks the 25th anniversary of Peoria Notre Dame. Following are some of the events planned to celebrate this exciting achievement.

The day will begin with an all-school Mass followed by a presentation of a special award to Msgr. Stan-

ley Deptula. Father Deptula will speak to all the students, faculty and staff about the Venerable Fulton Sheen.

Take in the beautiful Peoria skyline during an eve-ning river boat cruise with alumni from Academy,

Honor our past and celebrate our future together as the 150th Anniversary Celebration comes to a

conclusion. Unite in thanksgiving for the gift of Catholic Education during Holy Mass at 4:00 PM at the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Im-maculate Conception in the Diocese of Peoria. A reception, catered by Coyote Creek, will be held immediately afterwards at the Sheen Center. The top art displays from the alumni art show as well as from current students will be available for viewing in the diocesan museum. The Fulton Sheen Museum will also be open.

MASS & RECEPTION

The PND art family invites our alumni artists to submit work to the First Annual Alumni Art Show. The top ten works will be on display at the Peoria Riverfront Museum Reception on June 22, 2013 for the evening and then move to the Spalding Pastoral Center Museum until De-cember 27, 2013. All submitted artwork will be digitally displayed during the June 22 reception.

HERE & THERERev. Richard Raney (30SI) Fr. Raney turned 100 years old on October 19, 2012. He is the oldest living priest in the Peoria Diocese. Fr. Raney has been retired for many years and lives in Ft. Meyers, FL. He still offer mass everyday for the Poor Clare Nuns at their Monastery. Several members of his family were with him to celebrate his birthday.

Mary (Houlihan 42AOL) Merdian left Peoria in March of 2010 and is now living in Greensboro, NC with her hus-band of sixty-two years. They have three grown children. Mary would love to hear from any classmates of AOL ‘42. (Mary’s husband passed away June 29, 2012)

Ery (Tex 45SI) and Mary (Hooley “Dimples” 47AOL) Weicherding reside in Riverside, CA. with their daughter. They have four grown children and three grandchildren (all boys). They have lived in Peoria, Country Club Hills, and Danville. Ery has been in education, but retired he became a Nursing Home Administrator, attended LPN school, working at the VA Medical Center in Danville and finally re-tired in 2005. Mary attended St. Francis School of Nursing, worked in OB in Peoria and Chicago, Sup of OB in Dan-ville and moved to Health Department. Graduated from Eastern Illinois University with a degree in Nursing and be-came Director of Nurses at the Health Department. Moved to staff position with VA Medical Center and founded their Home Care Program becoming the director. Retired from VA in 1999 and joined the Parish Nurse Program at their church and retired in 2011 when they moved to California.

Mary (Wennmacher 54AOL) Supan resides in Indianapo-lis, IN with her husband Robert. She is retired. They have five children.

Timothy R Gorman (56SI) is retired from Caterpillar and resides in Peoria. He received a BA from University of Notre Dame and Bradley University. He has two children Jonathan (84BHS) and Amy (87BHS).

Barbara (Rafool 60AOL) Patterson resides in Peoria. She has two daughters. Barbara’s grandson Brandon at-tends Bradley University and was a State Scholar. She worked at the Peoria County Courthouse, for several years

as a Court Clerk in Juvenile Court. Barbara also worked for a lawyer and the Agency on Aging. She has worked on different campaigns and was a fundraiser for many orga-nizations.

William Kennedy (61SI) is Foundation Director, Ave Maria Village Long Term Care Facility. He resides in Jamestown, ND with his wife Mary. William received his MFA Creative Writing from Hamline University.

Jo Fredell Higgins (63AOL) eighth book will be released in December, 2012. “Legendary Locals: Aurora” will be published by Arcadia Publishing, the leading history pub-lisher in the US. This book profiles 150 leaders of Aurora during her 175 year history that is being celebrated this year. A signature signing will be held on December 8, 1-3 PM at the Aurora Historical on E Downer Place in Aurora.

Jo also participated in Peoria’s Erin Fest this past August and spoke on her memoir of living in Belfast, Northern Ire-land for a year. “Souls: A Portrait of Belfast. A Memoir” will be released by Tate Publishing this summer. Several of her books will be available for sale including “A Song for Ceci-lia”, the Peoria novel released last year. She will publicize the books with a trip to Ireland appearing on local television and radio in Dublin and Belfast. Jo Has had seven recent book events in the Aurora area including Caribou Coffee in Naperville and The Village Grind in Oswego.

Kenneth Zant (63SI) is Retired from Lockheed Martin Aerospace. He is living in Hartsel, CO with his wife Elaine. Kenneth received his BS from the University of Illinois.

David Lakin (64SI) is a Retired SMSgt USAF/ANG. He attended Illinois Central College and University of Illinois Springfield. David resides in Pekin, IL

Mary (Mueller 65AOL) Vagner received the Idaho Super-intendent of the Year Award on February 17, 2012. She was nominated for the award by her District’s Board of Trustees and is in her sixth year as Superintendent. Cou-rageous, respectful, responsive, effective, accountable, empowers, calm, responsive, ethical, leader: were the attri-butes used by School board members. Mary was selected because she has implemented practices and professional development that strengthened the leadership team, inte-grated district-wide school improvement planning and ac-



countability and engaged students, parents and the com-munity in decisions. Mary resides in Pocatello, ID and has two adult sons.
