association. It seems that Covenant's alumni have been ready and willing to grow and change. and now the time is right.

The Hospice Program, an attempt to coordinate Christian hospitality among alumni, has met with resounding approval. This program has generated more alumni mail than anything since the 1982 Alumni Conference. Open your home by sending in the enclosed reply card or writing to the Alumni Office. Alumni who see your "nospice" listed in the directory will contact you directly to see if a "bed and breakfast" stopover would be con venient.

Homecoming Weekend 1983, a time for experiments. was an exciting and uplifting series of events.

A wonderful recital by alumnae Rebecca Barker and Diana Notaro began the weekend. Covenant alumni played aggressively against the varsity soccer team in the afternoon, losing 3-4. Sue Soltau and Ed Kellogg shared their pottery and artwork with us. Career Day introduced students to seven alumni who spoke about Covenant's

tions, "Living by the Grace of God," and "Death is Ended ," finished the musical selections for the evening.

The following are excerpts from the citation written by Mr. Schmidt:

Edward Kellogg, Painter /Printmaker

Since his first solo show (San Diego State University, 1968) Ed Kellogg has shown works in more than 21 such shows. His awards include purchase awards (Palomar College, Hunter Museum of Art), awards in painting and graphics, awards in Reformed circles (Calvin College) , awards everywhere. His work is currently on a national tour with the National Museum of American Art (Smithsonian), and has been shown in Canada and the Netherlands. Major collections of Kellogg works are on exhibit at major businesses in the Chattanooga area and at Hunter Museum of Art .

In an interview for The Knoxville Journal, (August 18, 1983) Kellogg was asked if being famous was important to him . He just answered, "No. " His father was a Calvinist minister who instilled in him the importance of doing good work. "I just want to do good paintings," Kellogg says - and he does .

Covenant's only art professor, Kellogg can often be seen encouraging budding artists on the college's scenic eastern overlook. Students comment on his generous helpfulness and approachability. In short order they become comfortable working closely with him, a man of prodigious ability and admirable simplicity. The fruits of Ed Kellogg's work grace dozens of Covenant homes, reminding us to take time to see and enjoy our world .

St. Elmo, the community at the foot of Lookout Mountain, is the site of the Kellogg home . In this graceful , old Victorian home, besides two bedrooms and a huge second-floor studio, you will find furniture made by the saw and sewing machine of Doreen Kellogg. Her bannermaking has given Covenant an impressive and unique

display for promotional use . Ed and Doreen have 3 children: Francesca , Jessica and Benjamin, and expect their fourth child to be born in late December.

Covenant's alumni salute the God-given gifts and graces of artist-in-residence , Ed Kellogg.

Alumni Giving: growing with the college Alumni play a vital part in the success of the college's

annual fund program . Last year we saw an impressive increase in alumni giving . Part of this success was realized through Phonathon '83, our telephone campaign last April. We have scheduled this year's Phonathon for November. Fall is better for gift planning, ten months in advance of the gifts and grants goal deadline.

Alumni and student callers may contact you in coming weeks . Please be thinking of the amount you would like to pledge to the 1983-84 Annual Fund. (We have found that the Phonathon is also an excellent way of updating our alumni information files and getting additional information for this newsletter!)

Plans for the Advancement Campaign will be finalized at our Board of Trustees meeting October 27-28. The Advancement Campaign is our name for a major capital campaign which will encompass the next three years. Through this intensive fund drive we hope to raise money for projects that cannot be accommodated by the annual fund . New construction needs that will be addressed are a classroom/ administration building and a new wing for Belz Hall. The classroom building will provide much needed instructional space and additional faculty offices . This additional space will also allow the library and music departments to expand within their current facilities . Overcrowding in our residence halls inter, feres with academic and personal development. Informal recreation and student lounge space are also lacking. The proposed residence hall addition will provide housing for 75 students as well as needed lounge and recreational space .
