PRESIDENT’SMESSAGE

In so many ways,MORGAN helpedshape who I am,

by providing me withan excellent educationand a social and cul-tural foundation. Partof my worldview was

shaped in MORGAN’s classrooms. Manyof my enduring friendships began onMORGAN’s campus. Because MORGANhas been such an important part of my life,I gladly support the university, both as avolunteer and financial contributor.

Was your experience similar? IsMORGAN an essential part of your lifestory? Did you discover an interest or anaptitude here that led you to a career or alifelong hobby? Did coming here andmeeting other students from across thecountry and around the world expand yourview of life and its possibilities?

As alumni, we have the opportunity toensure that all of the good we derivedfrom our MORGAN experiences is avail-able for generations to come. Contribute toMORGAN’s New Horizons capital cam-paign and help create more scholarshipsfor future students. Share your stories withus. Let us know where you are and whatyou are doing. Fellow alumni want toknow, and MORGAN needs to know. Allof our achievements are part of the MOR-GAN story and help to attract support andnurture growth. Do you know MORGANgraduates who are not in the AlumniAssociation and who do not receive infor-mation from MORGAN? Share theirnames with us, and let us invite them intoour community. By doing so, you helpbuild and strengthen the MORGAN fami-ly.

MORGAN has given so much to us.Let’s remember to give something back.

The new library project is back on track after several months of debate overwhether or not the proposed site for construction had water problems. Twoseparate and independent engineering consultants found that water seepagein the old fine arts facility, once located on the proposed library site, was aresult of poor building design and construction rather than a high water table. Also, legislation passed during the 2002 General Assembly session allowsthe university to be reimbursed for any funding it advances to completeplanning for the new library. That same legislation provided for an appropri-ation of $54 million next year for reimbursement and actual construction ofthe new library, which is scheduled to begin in November of 2003.

ALUMNI DAY 2002

On May 18, 2002, approximately 400 alumni converged on Morgan’s campus to celebrate their reunions. Dr. Earl S. Richardson pre-sented his “State of the University” address at the Annual Business Meeting. The Class of 1952 also held a meeting before the busi-ness meeting. At noon, before the luncheon, a reception was held in the fourth floor lobby of the McKeldin Center. Music for the

reception was provided by the MSU Jazz Ensemble. After the reception, the Annual Alumni Awards and Recognition Luncheon was held inthe Alice W. Parham Ballroom. Mark Gray, ‘90, served as the master of ceremonies. Awards were given to our Alumnus of the Year, James H.Gilliam Jr.; our Honorary Alumnus of the Year, Dr. Linda G. J. Gilliam; the Special Achievement Award went to the Honorable Ronald B.Merriweather; and the Philadelphia Alumni Chapter received the Chapter of the Year Award. The MSU Choir mesmerized the crowd in theirusual special way. As a special touch, Dr. Carter solicited one of the alumni, former choir member Mary James Jennings, to lead the choir insinging “Great is Thy Faithfulness,” while other former alumni members joined in. What a treat!

This year, those classes ending in “2” and “7” celebrated their reunions by making major contributions to the University. A number ofclasses made financial contributions; they included the Classes of 1952, 1957 and 1962.

The day was a total success, with alumni reminiscing with classmates whom they haven’t seen in years, or, in some cases, decades.

MORGAN HOSPITALITY CENTER MOVING FOWARD

President Earl S. Richardson was featured in an article, written by Morgan alumnaApril Ryan ’89, entitled “Hotel Morgan” for the September 2002 issue ofBaltimore Magazine. The article discussed Morgan’s Hospitality ManagementProgram and Dr. Richardson’s vision for a new home for the school – a new $50million facility that will include a 100-room hotel and conference center. It willserve as a training ground for students who want to enter the increasingly attractivehospitality industry. In the article, several respected leaders in both the public andprivate sectors expressed support for the center, given the current and anticipatedgrowth in the hospitality industry in the Baltimore-Washington corridor, as wellas the needs of the community and state agencies for conference accommodationsin Baltimore. At this time, the State is moving forward with acquiring the Northwoodproperty on which the facility would be built through its powers of eminent domain. The process of condemnation is underway in an attempt to reconcile differencesbetween the asking price and the appraised value of the property.
