From the cover: Want to make a custom cell phone case? Pick up a resin casting kit and a few extra supplies. Then follow the manufacturer’s instructions to make your own silicone mold. When the resin has cured, follow our step-by-step instructions to put the finishing touches on the cast.

SUPPLIES

• Resin casting kit

• Resin dye (optional)

• Abrasive pads

• Resin carving set

Gently remove the cured resin cast from the mold.

Use the abrasive pad to gently sand raised or rough edges until they’re smooth.

Using the knife tool from the carving set, carefully pierce openings and carve away excess resin. Sand again, as necessary.

TIP: Use a heat gun (held about six inches above the surface of the uncured resin) to eliminate bubbles.

We transformed this humble tray table into customized bedroom furniture with help from a tin superhero sign and some clear casting resin. And here’s the best part: Since resin dries to a super-hard finish, we know the finished piece will stay pristine in a much-used space.

Secure the sign with epoxy cement, and let it dry before you pour in the resin mixture.

This piece was perfect for the job because of its raised edge—it served as a wall to contain

the resin while it cured.

1. We used a blunt tool from the resin carving set to help pull the mold away from the hardened cast. If you can keep the mold intact, you can use it again later.

2. We applied enamel paint to transform our wheel into an exact replica of the others—and it’s nearly impossible to tell the difference.

You spent hours over a model—only to break an irreplaceable part? Casting resin can come to the rescue. Case in point: We cracked one of the wheels on this old-timey truck, but we used an intact wheel to make our own silicone mold so that we could cast a replacement.
