Starting point I St. Michaels church yard
1 The Catholic parish church ofSt. Michaels.A basilica, built on thefoundation of several former sites, 13th
15thcentury, the Romanesque vestry,choir-late Gothic period, tower 1496
(61m high), Epitaphs of the counts ofRieneck in the choir, 15th/16thcentury in
the side aisles and in the tower those ofbailiffs of Lohr such as the font of 1488, early
baroque choir stalls of 1654 by Valentin Mahlerfrom Lohr, new Gothic altars 1890 1905 of high
quality made by Franz Wilhelm Driesler, a native of Lohr.
2 Historic churchyard with stone crucifix.
3 Former Ladys chapel/grammar school (Kirchplatz 5/6). 1416 withKarner-charnel house, grammar school from the 16 thcentury to thebeginning of the 20th, sculpture of God the Father (15 thcentury) onthe west front.
4 Former Capucin monastery (Kirchplatz 8). Originally castle of thecounts of Rieneck. Medieval keep converted into Capucin monasterywith St. Josefs church from 1651 1664 and converted into theBruder-Konrad-Haus which houses various offices connected withthe church.
5 A former school for local children (Kirchplatz 9) built in the clas-sical style 1819, today the music school is housed here and various
adult education classes.6 The former chaplains house (Kirchplatz 3), basement 15th/16th
century, upper storey 18thcentury, small church yard door, 15thcenturywith a Gothic recess (alcove) and the gallery walk along the battlements.
Position III Market-place
1 The old town hall, animposing building, 1599 1601 built by MichaelImkeller, the masterbuilder from Lohr. Onthe ground floor for-merly open market
which was convertedinto a covered marketat the beginning of the19thcentury. Today it isa cultural meeting point,a room for concerts, lec-tures, exhibitions and se-
veral objets dart. The origi-nal Renaissance gable roof wasreplaced by a plain one in theclassical style with a tower on thenorth front aside a turret with a g old-plated Justitia in the Corinthian style.Market crucifix at the south-east corner.On the first floor there is a vestibule withRenaissance columns and a Renaissance stuccoceiling. Up to 1985 the city council and the local authoritieswere based there, after the renovation in 1989 it became the centre
of culture and further education in Lohr.2 Painters corner. Half-timbering ensemble Haupt-
strae 19 27 with carved corner posts and signs.
3 Lower market-place. A well, completedby the sculptor Hermann Amrhein in 1936,
depicting figures from the fairy taleBrderlein und Schwesterlein (little
brother and sister).
4 Upper market place. Next to theSparkasse (savings bank) well ofcoins (1984 ) with reproductions ofthe Lohr Pfennig (penny), theMainz thaler, the Bavarian crownthaler and ducats (Dukaten) andthe 5 DM coin.
Castle place
In former times all the courtiers of the counts
of Rieneck and all the chief bailiffs of Mainz
lived around the castle square.
1 Castle. Residence of the counts of Rienecksince the 14thcentury, in 1559 residence ofthe Mainz chief bailiffs, from 1814 residenceof the Bavarian higher district court, up to1972 of the government of the district.Birthplace of the Bamberg and Wrzburgarchbishop Franz Ludwig von Erthal (1730 1795). Two round towers, moat and bridgefacing the town, extensions on both sides.Knights hall, princes chamber (17th/18thcentu-ry). Today the castle is a museum, the Spessart
Museum with a rich collection of typical itemsfrom man and forest, Mensch und Wald,
especially the history of the local gl ass productionand items from the world of hunting and foresting.
2 Former school of forestry and administration,16th 18thcentury (Schlossplatz 2).
23 Former winery (Schlossplatz 5) built in the 14 thcentury
as a superior Bandhaus, a barrel makers workshop. Touristinformation in the basement, an art gallery in the upper storey; on the
opposite side the old Kellerei, a winery with attractive half-timbering.
4 The new town hall (Schlossplatz 3) from 1986, with an addedconference hall built on the old foundation walls of the Zehntscheunewhere the tithes were paid in medieval times, previously the stablesof the castle and the prison from 1863 1949, the so-called Fronfestewere situated on this site.
Position V Oberes Tor (Upper Gateway) The position of the former gateway is marked inthe stone with Lohrs coat of arms.
1 Former district court (Hauptstrae 52), a representative buildingin the classical style from 1842, planned by Friedrich von Grtner,since 1982 the police administration.
2 On the same site as the former hospital you will find todays Main-Spessart-Klinikum, Graf-von-Rieneckstrae 5 with the hospital chapel(1870) John the Baptist with a cast-iron top, on the east side HermannAmrheins sculpture of the good Samaritan.
