ALTON —The Alton River Dragons rallied to tie their game with Nor-mal Sunday night 4-4 in the sixth. But the Corn-Belters countered with three run in the top of the seventh and downed Alton 7-4 before a season-high crowd of 1,034 fans at Lloyd Hopkins Field.
The game was the last home game of the River Dragons’ first season. The loss dropped Alton to 26-31, while the Corn-Belters even their record at 29-29.
“We had a season-high crowd for the last home game,” river Dragons general manager Dallas Martz said. “While we came up shirt, it’s sup-port like this that has us
already excited for 2022.”After an off day on
Monday, the River Drag-ons will wrap up their first season with a pair of road games.
Tuesday, they will play the Cape Catfish in Cape Girardeau, Mis-souri at 7:05 p.m. They will finish the season Wednesday with a rivalry game against the O’Fallon Hoots at 6:35 p.m. at CarShield Field in O’Fallon, Missouri.
Sunday night against Normal, Alton led 1-0 after the second inning, but Normal tied it in the fourth and took a 3-1 lead in the fifth. The CornBel-ters made it 4-1 with a run in the top of the sixth inning.
Alec Nigut hit a two-run home run for the River Dragons in the
sixth inning that pulled his team into a 4-4 tie at that point. He also scored a run earlier in the game.
Alton, which was out-hit by the CornBelters 10-5, also got a hit, including a triple, from Josh Johnson, who scored twice as well.
The River Dragons’ David Harris had two hits, an RBI and scored a run. Third baseman Adam Stilts also added a hit.
In the second inning, Josh Johnson walked leading off, went to sec-ond on a single by Harris and scored when Bryce Zupan reach base on an error by the CornBelters first baseman.
After Normal had taken its 4-1 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, the River Drag-
ons tied it. In the bottom of the sixth, Johnson tripled to center field, then scored on a single by Harris. With two out, Nigut’s two-run homer scored Harris ahead of him and deadlocked the score 4-4.
That tie didn’t last long. In the top of the seventh, Normal’s Alex Steinbach put the Corn-Belters ahead 5-4 when he greeted Alton reliever
Geoff Withers with a leadoff home run.
Then with one out, Withers hit Normal bat-ter Eddie Nieman with a pitch. Ben Hopkins fol-lowed that with a single, sending Niemann to third base. Jonathan Latham then doubled to left field, scoring Niemann and sending Hopkins to third.
Parker Johnson was called in to relieve With-ers on the mound and
Normal’s Andy Bunton drove in the third run of the inning with a sacri-fice fly to right field.
Withers took the loss on the mound for the River Dragons after allowing three hits and being charged with all three CornBelters runs in the seventh. The River Dragons left six runners stranded, while the Corn-Belters left 10 runners on base.

TOKYO (AP) — Sim-one Biles is back.
The 2016 Olympic gymnastics champion will return to competi-tion in the balance beam final on Tuesday, a little over a week after step-ping away from the meet to focus on her mental health.
“We are so excited to confirm that you will see two U.S. athletes in the balance beam final tomorrow — Suni Lee AND Simone Biles!! Can’t wait to watch you both!” USA Gymnastics said in a statement.
The 24-year-old Biles won bronze on beam in Rio de Janeiro five years ago and qualified for the eight-woman final at the Ariake Gymnastics Cen-tre on the first weekend of the Games.
She removed herself from the team final on July 27 after a shaky per-formance on vault during the first rotation. She watched from the side-lines as her three Ameri-can teammates com-pleted the meet without her; the U.S. took silver behind the team known as the Russian Olympic Committee.
The six-time Olympic medalist later said she was dealing with issues surrounding air aware-ness, referred to as “the
twisties” in her sport.Biles qualified for all
five individual event finals but took herself out of four of them: the all-around, vault, floor exercise and uneven bars. Lee earned the gold in the all-around, becom-ing the fifth straight American to claim the sport’s marquee title.
Considered to be the greatest gymnast of all time and the unques-tioned face of the U.S. Olympic movement when she arrived in Japan, Biles continued to train and be evalu-ated daily by the USA Gymnastics staff after opting out of multiple finals. She has also been a fixture in the stands supporting Lee, MyKayla Skinner and Jade Carey while they competed in the event finals.
She went into exten-sive detail about “the twisties” last week, explaining she lost the confidence of know-ing what her body was going to do in midair. It’s not the first time Biles dealt with the problem, though she did say the issues followed her to both uneven bars and beam.
Previous bouts with the phenomenon were limited to floor exercise and vault, where more
twisting elements are required.
“I’m really proud of her for coming back,” said American Jade Carey, who won gold on floor exercise Monday while Biles watched surround-ed by the rest of the U.S. women’s team. “She’s been through a lot this Olympics so I’m really proud and happy to see her going after beam.”
Finishing her second Olympics — and perhaps her career — on balance beam is poetic justice of sorts for Biles. She got bronze in Rio despite grabbing the 4-inch piece of wood that’s 4 feet off the ground when she almost slipped mid-routine. It was her fifth medal at the Games. The other four were gold.
Biles has called the bronze the medal she earned in Brazil that she’s proudest of, and she’s taken to task those who called it a disap-pointment, using it as proof to the double stan-dard she believes follows her whenever she com-petes.
Athletes from all over — both at the Olympics and elsewhere — have rallied around her over the past week, praising her courage for speaking up about the importance of mental health.

St. Louis Cardinals assistant gen-eral manager Moisés Rodríguez has been expecting the news that came down Friday.
“At seven in the morning when my phone rings, I sort of panic because it might be that phone call,” he said.
After 20 years in baseball ranging from media relations to international scouting, Rodríguez is in a role he never imagined — contact tracer during a coronavirus pandemic.
Dozens of team employees across Major League Baseball have been entrusted to carry out the critical task, a pillar of the league’s plan to operate a 60-game season while COVID-19 continues to assail much of the United States — and has caused the postponement of 16 games in the first week of the season. The job requires sensitivity and dili-gence, and it relies on trust between players and their employers to keep personnel safe and the season alive.
Rodríguez spoke to The Associated Press on Tuesday, three days before it was revealed that two Cardinals players tested positive for the corona-virus, leading to the postponement of Friday’s scheduled game in Milwau-kee.
Prior to Friday, Rodríguez had completed one other contact trac-ing investigation, at the onset of preseason camp when at least two players were flagged during intake testing. He spoke to the AP about his experience.
“It is new, I’m sure, for a lot of people,” Rodríguez said.
When a positive test is returned — whether it’s an isolated individual like Washington Nationals star Juan Soto, or a team-wide outbreak like the Marlins — contact tracers are immediately tasked with investigat-ing carriers’ interactions. Infected persons are asked to thoroughly recount the 48 hours before they tested positive or first showed symp-toms, so any team or league person-nel found to have had close contact can be tested and quarantined to help stem the spread.
The league’s tracing does not extend to non-team personnel, such as employees at hotels, but efforts are made to alert public health entities as well as enmeshed companies.
At least two employees for each club were appointed in June for tracer training. The league suggested that medical staff and bilingual employees were ideal fits, but the decision was left to teams.
“The main requirement is attention to detail,” said Bryan Seeley, senior vice president and deputy general
counsel for investigations, compli-ance and security at MLB, whose department oversees the program.
Rodríguez has known some Cardi-nals players since they were teenag-ers, and the former director of inter-national operations also speaks Span-ish, making him an ideal candidate.
Immediately after any Cardinals on-field personnel register a posi-tive test, Rodríguez must touch base with the infected person and begin an initial interview. What follows is a delicate conversation, with Rodríguez directing the investigation — he’s provided forms and scripts to use — while maintaining empathy.
“Trying to navigate and be sensi-tive to that part, but at the same time gather all the details that you need for this to work, that’s a tricky bal-ance,” he said.
Rodríguez found that trust was critical. If players are worried teams will punish them for potential pro-tocol violations, they might not be forthcoming about every interaction they’ve had, creating troubling gaps in the tracing.
“I expected a lot of players to be guarded in that a club official was questioning what they were doing in their personal time,” Rodríguez said. “That’s just natural, right? ‘Why is he asking me all these questions?’
Even when players are honest, retracing steps and identifying con-tacts is difficult. Players don’t always remember every interaction during initial interviews and are encouraged to follow up with tracers if something else comes to mind.
But it’s also up to the tracers to know the right questions to ask.
Rodríguez’s familiarity with players and their habits paid off during his first investigation. He had a hunch about where they might congregate.
“I made sure I asked them, ‘Hey, did you leave your hotel room? Did you go to the park to play catch?’” he said.
“Those are the sort of questions I was able to raise that were help-ful,” he added. “I definitely got some answers.”
Teams have other means of check-ing where a player has been, includ-ing seating charts from team buses and planes kept by traveling secre-taries. At least one club also used stadium security footage to look for possible associations.
Tracers have to complete a two-hour online training course — sub-stantially less training than provided to tracers preparing to work with the general public. That might not be a problem, according to epidemiologist Dr. Emily Gurley, because of existing familiarity between MLB’s tracers and the people they would be tracing.
