  • FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

2021 DEDICATED TO ST. JOSEPH St. Joseph is the patron saint of the Universal Church, and on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, Pope Francis issued a decree placing the coming year under his protection. This decree celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Church being under the protection of St. Joseph. In the decree, the Apostolic Penitentiary stated “to reaffirm the universality of St. Joseph's patronage in the Church,” it would grant a plenary indulgence to Catholics who recite any approved prayer or act of piety in honor of St. Joseph, especially on March 19, the saint’s solemnity, and May 1, the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker. Other notable days for the plenary indulgence are the Feast of the Holy Family on Dec. 29 and St. Joseph’s Sunday in the Byzantine tradition, as well as the 19th of each month and every Wednesday, a day dedicated to the saint in the Latin tradition.

The decree said: “In the current context of health emergency, the gift of the plenary indulgence is particularly extended to the elderly, the sick, the dying and all those who for legitimate reasons are unable to leave the house, who, with a soul detached from any sin and with the intention of fulfilling, as soon as possible, the three usual conditions, in their own home or where the impediment keeps them, recite an act of piety in honor of St. Joseph, comfort of the sick and patron of a happy death, offering with trust in God the pains and discomforts of their life.” The three conditions for receiving a plenary indulgence are sacramental confession, the reception of Holy Communion and prayer for the pope's intentions. As we begin this special year, let’s look at St. Joseph and Christmas. He is one of the most overlooked characters in the Nativity story, which is understandable, as the sum total of the words he spoke that have been recorded for us is zero; he is a quiet man of action. As we enter more deeply into this season of anticipation, we take a closer look at this role model.

As a model of humility: St. Joseph is a quiet figure in the Gospels—never speaking a single word, yet his actions speaking loudly about the kind of strong, humble, and devoted man he was. Pope Francis calls to mind St. Joseph as a father in the shadows citing the novel “The Shadow of the Father,” published by the Polish author Jan Dobraczyński. The pope writes ‘in his relationship to Jesus, Joseph was the earthly shadow of the heavenly Father: he watched over him and protected him.” St. Joseph is a model of service and charity, lived in humility. It takes a certain maturity to lead such a life.

We see this humility in Sacred Scripture. In Matthew’s genealogy, all of the people in the genealogy are listed as the “father of” so-and-so, except for Joseph. When we come to Joseph’s introduction, we read that Joseph was not the “father of” but the “husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ” (Matt 1:15-16).

Fr. Steve Grunow from Word on Fire Catholic Ministries writes: “Saints are not celebrities, who leverage every detail about their lives as a means to be known and recognized. A saint is someone who in their desire to be like Christ is able and willing to disappear into the mission God gives to them. For some saints, this mission brings with it a great deal of attention. But for most saints, the life of grace involves a much lower profile and a death to self which requires an immersion into the most ordinary of circumstances... It is all of us, who right now find ourselves immersed in the mission to be the unnoticed saints of ordinary circumstances, who know that the silence of Saint Joseph speaks louder than any words.”

St. Joseph also exemplifies devotion, for he was a man entirely devoted to God and sacrificially devoted to his family.

Pope Leo XIII called St. Joseph the “guardian of the Holy Family”—that’s how devoted a spouse to Mary and father to Jesus he was.

    continued

Matthew’s Gospel tells us that Joseph was a “just man” (Matt 1:19), meaning he was righteous and devoted to following God’s laws. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI states he was “at the service of life and growth…St. Joseph…gave proof of great devotion. For the sake of Christ he experienced persecution, exile, and the poverty which this entails. He had to settle far from his native town. His only reward was to be with Christ.” St Joseph: Pray for us.

    God bless Fr Jim
