Welcome yet again to another issue of ALTERNI TIMES… the last one for 2009. This time, the focus is on Asian traditional medicine – the oldest and richest in the world.

The medicine systems of China and India can be traced back to 4,000 years ago. This clearly pre-dates European medicine.

Indeed, elements of Asian systems of medicine were incorporated into the European systems by the European conquerors of the past.

Asian traditional medicine had been blossoming but unfortunately it was “submerged” by the “tsunami” of Western Medicine.

Now, all over the world, traditional systems of medicine are seeing a remarkable revival.

Geography In terms of geography, we are just as blessed. We snugly fit just above the equator. We have the peninsula and the northern top of Borneo. We have a mountain range that forms the backbone of the peninsula; the highest mountain in South-East Asia; and we are surrounded by seas.

That is not all. We are equidistant from India and China. This has made it possible for peoples of these lands to come and settle in Malaysia with the early advent of sea travel.

For more than 500 years the traditions, including that of health and healing, of the peoples of India, China and Indonesia have been intermingling with that of the indigenous people. This cross fertilisation has resulted in a rich hybrid of Asian Traditional Medicine that has been practiced in Malaysia.

WE have right in our garden a very lovely looking whitish flower that looks like the whiskers of a cat, hence its Malay name, Misai Kucing (Orthosiphon species) or Remujung. It is more than lovely looking. Misai Kucing is used for the treatment of a variety of ailments – gout, arthritis, rheumatism and similar inflammatory conditions.It is also used as a remedy for kidney stones and can be useful as part of a detoxification programme as it would safely help escort acids out of joints.

Note: Taking the Misai Kucing tea can cause you to urinate more often in response to the diuretic action. To avoid dehydration, just drink more water.

Kacip Fatimah Traditionally for the New Mother GROWN freely in the garden, it was the medicine of choice for new mothers in Malay homes until the onslaught of modern medicine which came with a price tag.

The herb Kacip Fatimah (Labisia pumila) grows quickly, between six and nine months.

“In the course of one pregnancy,” according to an old Malay traditional medicine man, when a woman is pregnant, her husband would plant it. The plant will be ready to help when the baby arrives.”

The most famous is its ability to restore vaginal laxity following pregnancy and childbirth.

The word “kacip” refers to “clip” or “grip”, an obvious reference to its vaginal-tightening ability.

Traditionally, pregnant Malay women consume the water decoction of the root of the plant for induction and facilitation of labour.

It is no surprise that Kacip Fatimah is making a comeback as enlightened Malaysian women are now using the herb, especially as an afterbirth tonic.

It is not just pregnant women who benefit from Kacip Fatimah.

The herb has been traditionally used as an anti-dysmenorrhoea, a treatment of painful or difficult menstruation.

Other traditional uses of the plant include the treatment of dysentery, rheumatism and gonorrhoea. It is also used as an anti-flatulence by helping to prevent the formation of gas.

Kacip Fatimah is not just used in Malaysia; all the indigenous people of the region use it. And in Malaysia today, it is not just Malay and other indigenous women who use it – Chinese and Indian women are discovering its uses.

The herb is a small genus of slightly woody plants of the family Myrsinaceae and it is found in Indochina and throughout Malaysia.

Kacip Fatimah or “Akar Fatimah,” named after Fatimah, the daughter of the Holy Prophet of Islam, is our second most famous herb, after the now world famous Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia Jack).

It bears noting that the husband of Fatimah, the son-in-law of the Prophet, is Ali after whom Tongkat Ali is named.

HONEY in Ayurveda is the “highest food” and is referred to as “Food of the Gods.” It is considered as a “pre-digested” natural “food concentrate of flowers and plant essences.

The FAO Codex Alimentarius Commission defines honey as “the natural sweet substance produced by honeybees from the nectar of flowers or from secretions coming from living organisms feeding on plants, that bees gather, transform and combine with specific ingredients, store and leave to ripen in the combs of the hive.”

In Ayurveda honey is called "madhu." Its qualities are explained as follows:

"Vaatalam guru sheetam cha raktapittakaphapaham

Sandhatru cchedanam ruksham kashayam madhuram madhu."

"It has sweetness (madhura rasa) with added astringent as end taste (kashaya anu rasa). It is heavy (guru guna), dry (ruksha) and cold (sheeta).

The effect of honey on dosha (mind and body) is as follows:

It aggravates vata (thin person to develop), scrapes kapha (trims a fat or big person), normalises pitta (medium-sized and well proportioned person) and rakta (blood tissue and circulation).

In effect, it promotes healing process.

The presentation will dwell on the basic principle of Ayurveda and the concept of the “balance of dosha.”

Shows The Way

To the sceptics of Malaysia's emerging biotechnology industry, the success of Holista Biotech Sdn Bhd and its CEO Dato’ Dr. Rajen M. make a statement that there are strong roots growing in the industry.

The headline news is BioNexus status Holista Biotech's recent reverse takeover of Perth-based biotech firm CollTech Australia Ltd which is listed on the Australian Stock Exchange. CollTech has since been renamed Holista Colltech Ltd (www.holistaco.com).

Both companies are working on products that have to do with collagen. CollTech specialises in the development and commercialisation of ovine (sheep) collagen products and is currently the only company in the world with the patented process to effectively extract ovine collagen.

Ovine collagen is disease-free and sourced from certified and fully traceable livestock, namely, sheep. Most importantly, ovine collagen is culturally acceptable and halal certified. The patent is valid until 2023. The company has also filed provisional patents in nanotechnology collagen and collagen eye drops.

This is the first time a Malaysian biotech company has made such a bold corporate move. To Rajen, the decision to undertake the reverse takeover was motivated by the desire to go global. “Our biotech entrepreneurs need to look beyond Malaysian borders. By us doing this, we are essentially taking our products, our brand and technology to the global market,” he observes.

“It is like you have been riding a motorcycle and riding it well all this time but now you have to learn to drive a racing car and build the right infrastructure and develop skills set around that racing car.”

The deal with CollTech came about partly because of the economic crisis, which caused a waning in investor appetite for start-ups. Thus CollTech, with its weak share price, being far from market with its product and starved for further funding, was ready to be acquired. The timing could not have been better for Rajen as the Australian currency had weakened by about 25 percent, from A$1 to RM3 to A$1 to RM2.35, when the deal was signed in November.


“Holista was able to generate the cash flow and get the valuation necessary to support a deal of this nature. And now, we have an Australian route to globalise some of the technologies we have been working on.” he says. Rajen also gets to tap the existing collaborations that CollTech has with some leading Australian universities; his chief scientific officer at CollTech has a Cambridge University PhD.

Rajen is excited about bringing back some of the trade secrets, technology platforms and patents owned by CollTech and working with Malaysian universities to further improve on them. Specifically, he is looking at the halal market.

“This will cement Malaysia's place as a global halal hub and create a space for us in the collagen market. Currently, collagen comes mainly from Germany and China, with some from the US,“ says Rajen. “No collagen is being supplied by an Islam ic nation, so this is the opportunity for us and for my alma mater, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), to leave our mark on the industry. By sharing what CollTech has, USM is getting a running start in its work.”

With USM being part of the BioNexus Partnership Programme, this collaboration shows that the ecosystem being put in place in biotech is slowly coming together.

Rajen signed two MoUs with USM and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia to work on halal collagen. On Sept 17, CollTech's supply of sheep skin comes from an Australian abattoir that is certified halal and exports sheep to the Middle Eastern markets.

“In Australia, we use an enzyme from a fungus to break down the proteins. We hope to produce a cheaper alternative than fungus, which is an expensive ingredient. This will allow us to do three things. We can provide cheaper halal collagen. Just because it is halal does not mean it should be priced at a premium. Second, this will allow us to improve our margins and finally, because it can be offered at a lower cost, we can go into the mass market.”

The collaboration with UTM is on a skin cream with kacip fatimah extract. UTM has already applied for a patent on an anti-aging cream with kacip fatimah for skin treatment. Building on this, Holista and UTM have come up with a formulation that uses the ovine collagen and work is ongoing with a product expected to hit the shelves in January.

Rajen is confident that the USM team, led by Prof. Aishah Latiff, and the UTM team, led by Prof. Ramlan Aziz and Prof. Dr. Mohamad Roji, will succeed in their research. “There are some really smart people there,” he says. Besides working on enzymes, the two university teams will be working on standardised extraction processes and studying toxicity levels.

For Rajen, the race is on to get his products successfully to the market and to prove that a Malaysian company has the guts, vision and execution capability to become a player to be reckoned within the biotech arena. — The Edge

IT is the glue that holds our body together. Collagen, from the Greek word kola or colla, is a tough structural fibrous protein.

Collagen is the most abundant protein in mammals, about one quarter of all of the protein in the body.

It is the main protein of the connective tissue. It has great tensile strength, and is the main component of ligaments and tendons.

It is responsible for skin elasticity, and its degradation leads to wrinkles that accompany aging. Collagen also fills out the cornea where it is present in crystalline form. It is also used in cosmetic surgeries, like lip enhancement.

We lose collagen as we age. We lose collagen due to wear and tear. We lose collagen due to burns, injury and surgery.

Thus, it should come as no surprise that collagen is the subject of much scientific and commercial interest. There are three areas of collagen use – as food, as cosmetic and in medical situations.

Let us look at sources of collagen:

Plants Plants simply do not produce collagen. The “plant collagen” that the personal care and cosmetics industry uses are frequently hydrolysed wheat proteins.

(Targeted at vegetarians, there has been an increased use of “plant collagen” when people were hesitant to use bovine or avian collagen after the outbreak of mad cow and Avian bird flu.)

Used for perceived safety benefits, they are manufactured from insolubilised total flour proteins or from gluten.

These protein sources are a complex mixture of soluble and insoluble materials, which then require hydrolysis to overcome insolubility issues.

Marine Marine collagen comes from fish, mostly fish scales. It can be used as a collagen substitute. However, there are several issues that stand in the way of its widespread uses:

Non-mammalian Marine proteins are quite different from mammalian protein. There are different structural complexities that exist in the fish kingdom.

Lower Temperature Fish live and die in temperatures that are very different from that of mammals. Fish are cold blooded while mammals are warm blooded. This again complicates the use of fish collagen as a substitute for mammalian collagen.

Ocean Toxins The oceans are increasingly being used as the dumping sites of humanity’s careless excesses. As the oceans become more polluted, the fish are increasingly becoming toxic. Thus, their flesh and oils are increasingly toxic to us.

Not Traceable Perhaps, the biggest constrain for the use of fish collagen is that it is not traceable. This is further complicated by the issues of toxic pollutants increasingly found in fish and other marine life.

Fish Odour There is a fishy smell to fish collagen that does get in the way of its widespread use.

Cost You just do not yield as much collagen from fish as you would from mammals and thus, fish collagen carries a price premium.

Avian Birds are a better source of collagen. Indeed, there has been work in Harvard Medical School on collagen from chicken.

Birds are certainly better than fish as a collagen source. They are warm blooded and live in temperatures closer to ours.

They are also devoid of the toxins of the oceans that fish carry. Avian collagen is also more costly than mammalian collagen – again on the basis of poor yields.

However, the market of avian collagen literally collapsed as a result of the fallout from the avian bird flu scare and is unlikely to recover.

Mammals Collagen from mammals is most similar to that which is found in us. Logically this is the best for collagen replacement.

Since we became farmers, we have domesticated pigs, cows and goat/sheep – for our meat (and hence collagen).

The collagen of cows and pigs are abundant and easier to extract but present serious religious and cultural issues will always prevent its widespread use.

On the other hand, sheep and goats are cleaner and better accepted sources of meat (and hence collagen).

(Sheep collagen is referred to as ovine collagen while that from cow is bovine collagen and that from pig is porcine collagen.)

However, the collagen from sheep is very difficult to extract and also yields less collagen per animal.

Handphones& Brain Tumour LONG-TERM use of handphones can cause brain tumours, according to a major World Health Organisation study.

People who have used a handphone for more than 10 years face a “significantly increased risk” of developing brain tumours such as glioma, says the Interphone study.

The study reviewed the evidence from 13 countries, involving around 12,800 people, according to a report published in October. The conclusions of the study will be published later this year.

Study head Dr. Elisabeth Cardis said the report will include a “public health warning” about handhone usage, especially among children.

France has been one of the first countries to act, and has banned the use of handphones in primary schools. Britain has cautioned about the overuse of handphones by children and adolescents.

The Interphone researchers said six of the eight studies they reviewed found that mobile phone usage increased the risk of glioma by up to 39 percent, while the risk of acoustic neuroma, a benign tumour between the ear and the brain, increased nearly four times among people who had used a handphone for more than 10 years.

Despite its findings, some critics believe the Interphone study has played down the real risks by including people who use a handphone only infrequently, and by excluding children altogether.

Critics point out that the study was partly funded by the handphone industry, whose own research has invariably failed to find any link between its products and brain tumours.
