• At risk students usually have or undergone school psychological evaluations that identify them as requiring special attention not available at traditional school settings. Programs may include emotionally disturbed, oppositional and disruptive students. These schools offer closer supervision and trained staff.

• Students who have violated school policy in regards to zero tolerance.

• Students with multiple school rule violations.• Students who have been suspended for a period greater than 10

days.• And other things such as:• Cannot work with others, cannot follow directions , lack of

responsibility and no self control.

• Map Academy • MAP is a private company categorized under training school for

delinquents in the Wilson county school district.• When you get into a serious amount of trouble you can get a

hearing.• A map hearing determines if you get to stay In the school system or

if you get sent to map.• If sent to map according to the severity of your crime you are

sentenced to a certain term there just like prison.• You must behave or you could accumulate more time also like

prison, but can not get out early on good behavior.

• For example if you got sent to map for 30 days you would get 3000 points that need to be earned.

• Each person starts out the day with 100 points. If you miss behave then you loose points and it can add to your stay at map.

Getting put out of group

Getting put out of group is a more severe punishment because there is a more severe behavioral problem. When your put out of group your points turn into hours and extends your time at map academy.

• Certain actions get someone put out of group. • When a student gets put out they stop earning points and are given

hours. If they get put out for 2 days that 24 hours and they cannot receive points until those hours are up. If they are out of group and

they have another discipline problem there time starts over in group.• Things that would get you put out.• Telling a lie = 21 hours or 3 days

• Wearing make up = 1 day• Not doing homework = 7 days

• So if I told a lie and got put out of group and then got caught wearing make up then my time would start over with 4 days.

• Some of the rules at map for girls are:• Hair must be natural color. If it is not it must be dyed to natural color.• Hair must be in a pony tail• No make up• Bras can have no underwire

Differences from tradition Differences from tradition

• In traditional schooling desks are used and students can see around the room. However in most alternative schools students sit in cubicles so that they can not look around the room.

• Traditional schools usually have students in the same grade level in one classroom, at most of these schools students from different grade levels are in the same room. Students are given their lessons and have to complete them there is not a lot of teaching that goes on.

• These students have caused problems or have been in trouble enough to be there so of course there is more security and supervision that goes on for everyone's safety.

• A close friend of mine got sent to map for a majority of her junior year in high school. She and a friend had been done wrong by a boy so they decided to retaliate. They got to school early and posted many pictures of this guy in middle school when he was overweight. The caption under the picture said ‘’_____ is gay”. These ladies got caught and were sent to map for sexual harassment.

• Another guy I knew got sent for excessive skipping.• And he also got sent again for having tobacco products at school.

• Some of the students are first time offenders and others that know the map system well. So sometimes it’s not just severely troubled kids a lot of times it’s just dumb mistakes or flawed

judgment.

• Most behavioral alternative schools have the students teachers send there work from the main school. This means that the alternative school teachers are there just to help and to watch over and discipline the students.

• At Map they have there own teachers, assistants they do their own lesson plans and grading. The main school is not involved with map

• At risk programs are not enough for kids and teens to turn their lives around.

• There are boarding schools for rebellious teens that help them work out there problems ,bring up there grades and often get them ready to go back to normal schools.

• These schools are usually not local and are out in the country. • These schools are strict about dress code and eating habits. • Schools like this usually have a step by step program and once

you’ve completed all the steps you can return home.
