An electric car is a plug-in battery

powered car which is propelled by

electric motors.

Electric cars are generally more expensive than gasoline cars

Electric cars produce no pollution at the

tailpipe which will contribute to cleaner air in

cities

At low speeds, electric cars produced less roadway noise as compared to vehicles

propelled by an internal combustion engine

A hydrogen car is an alternative fuel vehicle that

uses hydrogen as its onboard fuel for motive

power.

There are two ways to get power using hydrogen:

Internal combustion engine (ICE)

Fuel cell

Page 11: Alternative fuels

INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE

(ICE)

Very similar to a normal petrol engine

It has two advantages from the fuel cell:

It is cheaper than the fuel cell.

It can be applied for solving those problems

where fuel cells are not a viable solution.

They have a high production cost.

They can´t work with freezing temperatures.

They have a long lifetime.

It can be obtained through:

Thermochemical methods

Electrolysis

Page 17: Alternative fuels

It doesn´t contribute to carbon dioxide

emission.

Fuel cell has a longer lifetime.

Hydrogen doesn´t occur naturally on the

Earth.

Hydrogen has low energy content per

volume unit.

It´s necesary build all the infraestructure

(refueling stations, pipeline transport…)

A water-fuelled car is an automobile that

works only with water(H2O).

Page 22: Alternative fuels

Electrolysis process

split water into

hydrogen and oxygen.

Page 23: Alternative fuels

Many water-fuelled cars obtain

hydrogen in a mixture of hydrogen and

oxygen called “oxyhydrogen” by the

electrolysis.

The hydrogen is burned, powering the car

and also providing the energy to

electrolyse more water.

Page 24: Alternative fuels

1-The energy released in combustion is the same that the energy consumed in electrolysis, and there would be no energy to power the car, even assuming 100% efficiency.

2-Efficiency is like 20%.

Page 25: Alternative fuels

In 2008 a Japanese company called

Genepax said that they had built a car

that worked only with water.

electricity.
