Program endorsed by the United Nations Association of the USA’s Southern New York Division February Konbit Pou Ayiti (KONPAY), which in Creole means, “Working Together for Haiti” is a Haitian non@profit organization, founded in 2004, spearheading deforestation efforts collaboratively in Haiti. Konpay’s program provides alternative charcoal made from organic waste, which costs less than 1 cent a briquette, which is half the cost of traditional Haitian charcoal. Konpay’s program provides an affordable alternative sustainable solution to meet the fuel needs of 80% of Haiti’s population that lives on a $1 a day. Joe Duplan, President and Co@founder of KONPAY, presented the Alternative Charcoal and Clean Cook Stove Program to former US President Bill Clinton at the Building Back Better Communities (BBBC) Green Expos on June 15 th & July 21 st , 2011, in Z’Orange, Haiti with collaborative partner Kara Lightburn, founder of Social Tap, Inc.‘s The Haiti Initiative (THI). KONPAY’s Alternative Charcoal & Clean Cook Stove Program Combatting Deforestation Only 1% of Haiti’s original forests remain, 76% of the deforestation is directly due to fuel usage, for local populations cut it down for wood and charcoal. The demand still exists for low cost fuel and with no alternative affordable fuel, deforestation continues and claims over 50 million trees a year in Haiti, erosion claims 15,000 acres of rich farm land top soil each year.
