INDEX OF FIRST LINES OF HYMNS
All creatures of our God and King All hail the power Another year is dawning
Come we that love the Lord
Fairest Lord Jesus Father of mercy Father whose will is life and good Fountain of good From all that dwell below the skies From thee all skill and science flow
Give to our God immortal praise Glorious things of thee are spoken Go forth, strong word of God
Hail the glorious golden city How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
I love thy kingdom Lord I sing th' ahnighty power of God In Christ there is no east or west In the Cross of Christ I glory
Joyful, joyful, we adore thee
Lord we thank thee for our brothers
Not alone for mighty empire Now let the vault of heaven resound
0 bless the Lord, my soul 0 day of rest and gladness 0 dearest Lord 0 Father all creating 0 Father hear my morning prayer 0 God of Bethel 0 God our help in ages past 0 God the rock of ages 0 happy is the man who hears 0 living Bread of heaven 0 living Christ 0 Lord may church and home combine 0 thou, whose own vast temple stands 0 where are kings and empires Our country's voice is pleading

Praise to the living God
Praise the Lord, ye heavens adore Him
See the Conqueror
Send down thy truth, 0 God
Sing praise to God who reigns above
Stand up and bless the Lord
The Church's one foundation
The God of Abraham praise
The Son of God
Thee holy Father we adore
This is my Father's world
Thou whose unmeasured Temple stands
We are living, we are dwelling
We dedicate this temple
We lift our hearts to thee
When all thy mercies
When courage fails and faith bums low
When morning gilds the skies
With solemn joy we come
Y e heavens on high, praise ye the Lord
Y e watchers and ye holy ones
Zion's King shall reign victorious

These Hymn Improvisations are practical introductions as they have developed for use in the worship services in Christ United Methodist Church, Rochester, Minnesota, as an attempt to add a creative, fresh, inviting, and an uplifting appeal to the importance of hymn singing in congregational worship. Too often organists, ministers, and laity take the matter of hymn singing too casually. Hopefully, this music may be used to give greater dimension, new life and color to Christian worship services and perhaps be a springboard for encouraging others to "give forth" with their own creative talents.
I have been greatly influenced and inspired by the improvising and great service playing of Dr. Nita Akin, Piet Kee, and Dr. Paul Manz to whom this work is affectionately dedicated.

New every morning is the love
0 Christ, our hope, our hearts' desire
0 for a closer walk with God
0 God eternal source
0 Cod, unseen, yet ever near
0 happy day when we shall stand
0 Lamb of God most holy
0 living Bread from heaven
0 Love, how deep, how broad, how high
0 Spirit of the living God
0 Splendor of God's glory bright
One who is all unfit to count
Our God, to whom we turn
Praise ye the Lord, ye servants of the Lord
That Easter Day with joy was bright
The Church's one foundation
The strife is 0' er, the battle done
Tum back, 0 man, forswear thy foolish ways
Where cross the crowded ways of life

Hymn Accompaniments
with Descants
by Scott S. Withrow

PREFACE
Descants and accompaniments used with congregational singing in the corpo
rate worship of Almighty God can be a stimulating, uplifting experience.
Many church musicians have encountered some problem in maintaining strong
congregational participation in hymn singing when going off the beaten track
with occasional descants and organ accompaniments. This collection is directed
toward the solution of that problem. The descants, choral edition APM-381,
may be suitably used, either with a harmonization found in many hymnals or
with the accompaniments herein contained.
It is hoped that the gradual introduction of these materials into the staid
customs of worship may result in new vitality directed to the honor and glory of
God.

INDEX OF HYMN TUNES
First Lines
How firm a foundation 0 come, all ye faithful
Across the sky the shades of night All glory be to God on high The Lord hath helped me hitherto
Crown him with many crowns Make me a captive, Lord Now in the days of youth Servant of God, well done Soldiers of Christ, arise
Christ, the Lord, is risen today Hark! the herald angels sing Jesus Christ is risen today
A mighty fortress is our God God's Word is our great heritage
Saviour, again to thy dear Name we raise
(see Vom Himmel hoch)
(see Stille N acht)
Good Christian men, rejoice Now sing we, now rejoice
Built on a rock the church doth stand Lord Christ, when first thou cam'st to men
Praise to the Lord, the Almighty
Hark! a thrilling voice is sounding Jesus, thou art mine forever
All hail the power of Jesus' N arne!
God of love and God of power Hark! ten thousand harps and voices He is risen, he is risen Jesus, brightness of the Father
Open now thy gates of beauty Rise, ye children of salvation See the morning sun ascending Who is this that comes from Edam

THIRTY-FOUR CHANGES ON HY N TUNES
(Hymn Introductions and Accompaniments)
Arranged for Organ by
JACK C. GOODE
PREFACE
The hymn changes in this collection were written for use as varied introductions or free accompaniments. Although they were written primarily for organ, they can be easily adapted to the piano. When they are used as introductions, two clues may prove useful in determining registration: the character of the hymn itself, and the structure of the change.
Some basic plans might be:
I) Full flues ("Mendelssohn," "Hymn to Joy") 2) Gradual increase ("Veni Emmanuel") 3) Strong Principal tone without mixtures ("Evan," "Germany") 4) Pedal emphasis ("0 Filii et Filiae") 5) Colorful contrasts ("Carol," "In dulcijubilo")
Free use of blank pedal with appropriate manual coupler(s) is frequently helpful to facilitate manual parts.

PREFACE
This collection •s result of many enqmnes from organists who have read my " Varied Harmonies to Hymn-tunes " (Oxford Press, 1924) and wished for further examples. may, therefore, be used in connection with that book, or it may be used independently by those not wishing to work out their own harmonisations.
The tunes used herein are in the main common to hymnals of all denominations; but as the keys in which they appear vary with different books, a certain amount of transposition will in many cases prove necessary.
Alternative versions are provided for those Psalmtunes which appear in some modern hymnals with 'gathering-notes' at the beginnings of the lines; and a few foot-notes call attention to occasional little melodic discrepancies.
February, 1937.

55 HYMN INTONATIONS
ABINGDON PRESS
NEW YORK ~ NASHVILLE

Foreword
These Hymn Intonations were composed for practical use in worship. The common practice of playing the first and last lines of a hymn as intonation has become a rather dull routine, and it is hoped that these short
compositions will encourage organists to find new ways in introducing hymns for congregational singing. The registration of each intonation should be in agreement with the character of the hymn. For instance, a
Praise Hymn should be introduced with a powerful sound. Special indications are made in the score for those intonations which are to be played on two keyboards. The organist may feel free to make use of echoes, keyboard changes, and so on, even though they are not
indicated in the score. The intonations offered here should only be used for familiar hymns. The unfamiliar hymns are introduced
best by playing a whole stanza before the congregation joins in. Harald Rohlig
