Small Data vs. Big Data

2

is a major trend

Hardware Trends

• Data in databases grow fast.

• Demand for ETL and machine learning grows fast as well

• It was a vertical build up, you had to buy more powerful, faster

querying, expensive machines (like Exadata)

• But now the trend is horizontal, you can use cheaper machines in

parallel, «Clusters»

• «Commodity» hardware is a very nice option for this use

• Use your Power Macs, PlayStation, desktop computers

• Don’t depend on a single supplier or a technology

• Lower costs, increase flexibility

Big Data * Calculations = Demand for Big Systems

Parallelization and open source creates miracles

Don’t depend on a monopoly

Database and Computing Trends

• When you make it cheap….

• HDD’s breakdown so frequently

• Lost data has many consequences

• Hadoop environment address this

• Yahoo built it and shared it open-source

• Current servers are optimized for fast querying not Predictive analytics.

• Massively parallel calculations are needed to tame Big Data

• «Commodity» hardware include GPU’s for powerful gaming by the way….

• Monopoly firms like Microsoft, Oracle, SAS have huge licensing demands

• And they are not up to speed with new developments in the community…

HDD breakdown * cost of lost data -> Redundant systems

Open source is critical

CPU vs. GPU usage

Analytics Solution Trends

• To tame big data you need data wranglers,

• coders and data scientist to process big chunks of data and

• Then data artisans who make good use of the insights

• We lack qualified Workforce worldwide

• It takes time to learn how to use legacy software

• There are multiple packages and propriety coding languages, which

are useless when you move form one company to another

• Hard to share developments between teams and clients

• Hard to turn into a usable app…

Lack of qualified people = Untamed data chunks

SW should be easy to implement easy to share

Proprietary Language leads to clumsiness

Here is the Competition in 2015
