BECOME AN ALTAR SERVER!

What does an Altar Server do? The primary role of the altar server is to assist the priest in the celebration of the liturgy and to be an example to the congregation by actively participating in the liturgy. Servers carry the cross and the processional candles, hold the book for the priest celebrant when he is not at the alter, carry the incense and censor, help during the preparation of the gifts, wash the priest’s hands, and assist the priest celebrant and deacon as necessary.

We are especially in need of new altar servers at this time. As long as a child has received their first communion, they can be trained to serve.

If you or your family members are interested in joining this beautiful ministry of altar serving at St. Catherine’s, please email our altar server coordinator, Connie Murljacic, at [email protected] or Deacon Renato Berzolla at [email protected].

Participants will encounter the strengths and needs of these women, but also how being a woman during the time of Jesus and the apostles shaped many of the challenges they faced. Participants will enter into discussion and prayer about expectant faith, what it means to be touched by Jesus, and the meaning of discipleship through the lives of the women who lived in the first generation of Christianity.

Registration forms can be found in the rectory or at www.stcath.org.

WALKING WITH PURPOSE

2017-18 Registration

Walking with Purpose is a women’s Catholic Bible study that aims to bring women to a deeper personal relationship with Jesus Christ by offering personal study and small group discussion that link our everyday challenges and struggles with the solutions given to us through the teachings of Christ and the Roman Catholic Church.

The Walking with Purpose parish program at St. Catherine of Siena is introducing a new 22-week session for 2017-18. Two courses will be offered. “Opening Your Heart”, the foundational course, is designed for women who are new to WWP. We welcome past participants and invite new women to join us! “Discovering Our Dignity” will also be offered, a study of women in the bible, which will draw us into a deeper relationship with Jesus and show how much Christ loves us.

************************ KEYS TO HOLINESS Holiness will help us to get to Heaven and comes when we surrender to God's will and put all of our trust in him.

Courage: During the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5), Jesus said, “blessed are the poor in spirit, blessed are they who mourn”, and promised that when we turn to God in times of trial, we will be cared for and comforted. Trusting God in difficult times takes courage. Discipline: Jesus makes it clear that we must apply the correct principles to our habits and use God’s laws as our standards. When he talked about ′’the meek”, “the merciful”, “those who hunger and thirst for righteousness”, he was giving us a ruler. We are to measure our behavior against these standards to see if we are on the right path to holiness.

Endurance: Only a true follower of Christ can put the Sermon on the Mount fully into practice. It takes endurance to combine holy inner attitudes with these outward actions and keep it up for life. © Copyright 2013 Success Publishing & Media, LLC

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK “Every day is a gift from God. That is why today is called

the present.”

"This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased;

listen to him." Gospel Reflection – Mt 9: 2-10 In this reading, Jesus takes his apostles Peter, James, and John up a high mountain. There, he is transfigured before them. He shows them the glory that is his as the only-begotten Son of God. With Jesus are the Old Testament prophets, Moses and Elijah.

Peter can hardly believe his eyes. He wants to do something to commemorate this wonderful event. He suggests that they build three tents there! He wanted to mark this spot as holy. Then, from heaven, the voice of the Father was heard: "This is my beloved Son. Listen to him." Suddenly, all was still. They looked up, and there was Jesus, alone with them. Then he prepared them for his death and resurrection.

It is important to remember that this event happened just before the passion and death of Jesus. This was a special gift to the apostles, so that they would remember that Jesus, their teacher and friend, was also their Lord, their Savior, and the Son of God.

Long after this event, Peter wrote about it in his first letter. How did he suggest we commemorate this event? Not by building tents on holy ground, but by paying attention to the message of Christ, by listening to the Son of God. Question of the Week: What and how would you have reacted if you were with Jesus at the Transfiguration? Family Discussion Questions for the Gospel Peter's impulse to mark this spot of encounter with Jesus was not wrong. It is a very human instinct. Our churches and shrines are "holy ground" for us. When we make a prayer corner at home or at school, we are setting aside "holy ground." Does this holy ground help you to be aware of God's presence? Does this holy ground help you to listen to Christ? How?

Why didn't Jesus and the apostles stay on the mountain? Why did they come down? What do you think?

If you have thoughts or questions about todays Gospel, any questions about your faith, or simply to let me know you’re reading these discussions, please feel free to email me at [email protected]. I’d love to hear from you.
