As I put my fingers to the keyboard, in writing what will be my first article since arriving into ministry within the Bredon Hill Group, we are approaching the season of Advent and Christmas: a time in the year, in which we have the opportunity to reflect on what has happened over the last twelve months, as we start to get ready for the busyness and excitement of the festive season. It has of course been a year full of ups and downs. For me personally, this has meant leaving a town my family and I had lived in for over 25 years. It has meant taking on a new role as the Vicar of the Eckington benefice with Overbury and ministry around Bredon Hill and it has meant making a new home and new friends in this beautiful part of the world. However, it has also involved saying goodbye, to friends old and new, not least of which included the sudden and tragic death of my colleague, the Rev. David Lewis of the Elmley Castle benefice, a loss shared by many people around the Bredon Hill Group of churches, who remember with much fondness and gratitude, his faithful ministry in this area. The year has therefore been one of great change and in society today, we all have to get used to change being a significant part of our daily lives, some of which we enjoy and some which we struggle with. The season of Advent is a time of expectation and preparation for the birth of the baby Jesus. This makes me wonder how we reflect and respond to the deeper reasons for the birth of this child, a child that was to change the world, and is still changing it! For Advent leads to an event which brings a time of great joy, of giving, of receiving, a time for family and loved ones to get together and celebrate, and for us all to reflect in wonder at the arrival of a small baby. All these aspects are right for this time of year, as they should be for all the year, but Christmas accentuates these things. However, these aspects are part of a much more important reason for Christ’s birth, a birth which leads to the forgiveness of God’s children from sin, and brings hope, peace and light into our ever-changing world. And so, as we all look forward to Christmas, and enjoy the preparations for this wonderful time of year, let us first and foremost, put Christ Himself into all that we do. As the saying goes “Jesus is the reason for the season”. It is Jesus who underpins every aspect of our lives, and it is Jesus who comes as a gift of love at Christmas. Therefore, as we prepare for this time of joy and love, may we give a thought to the reason for the season, and let Jesus underpin all we do as Christmas approaches. Finally, as we enter this time of waiting, reflection and all its hopefulness, may I take this opportunity to wish you all a very blessed Christmas and a happy New Year.

Hilary Noon Long-time residents of Teddington and Alstone will remember Canon Edward Noon and his wife Hilary who lived for three years in St Nicholas Cottage from1983 to 1986 following his appointment as Honorary Curate in the Chapelries when it was still the Parish of Overbury with Alstone, Teddington and Little Washbourne. In 1986 they moved to Wotton under Edge to be near their family. Edward died a number of years ago but Hilary, who died 10th September aged 93, continued living in Wotton under Edge where she played an active role in church life, particularly the Mothers Union, to the end of her life. A vicar’s daughter, brought up in some of the poorest parts of London, she married Edward later in life after the death of her first husband. Edward had been her father’s curate when she was a young teenager and remained a family friend over the years. In St Nicholas Cottage they were great friends with Trevor and May Roberts when Trevor was in his prime as the organist in the Chapelries, sharing a great love for the traditional services and music of the Church of England. I attended Hilary’s funeral at Wotton under Edge at the beginning of October where the church was full. I am writing this as we approach All Saints Day when we sing the traditional hymn ‘For all the Saints who from their labours rest’, which includes the lines: “O blest communion fellowship divine, we feebly struggle they in glory shine, yet all are one in thee for all are thine Alleluia” May God bless her and keep her and hold her in his hands this day and forevermore. Amen

End of an Era – the continuing story Rather too long after his official retirement – due to various circumstances which have intervened – a small gift was finally handed to Roger Palmer on 7th November, to thank him for his years of service and dedication as Lay Reader in all the churches of the Beckford Group and to convey our collective affectionate best wishes for an enjoyable and more leisurely future. After much deliberation as to the nature of the gift, it was decided that in view of his love of music a voucher for tickets to concerts – or other entertainments - at Cheltenham Town Hall might be appropriate and so it was duly acquired and handed over, together with a substantial package of brochures on forthcoming attractions at that venue.

Royal British Legion Beckford & Ashton under Hill Branch The Branch held its Annual General Meeting at Beckford Village Hall on Thursday 7th November. This year’s annual Remembrance Day service was held at St Faith’s, Overbury (see details on page 14). Derril Green and Faith Hallett both attended a Remembrance Assembly at Overbury First School and Derril Green also attended a similar event at Ashton First School.

This year’s Poppy Appeal was expected to raise less than the bumper total raised in 2018 to commemorate the end of World War 1. However, we will actually surpass that total this year. So far we have raised a remarkable £7,191, only £19 short of last year but with two more collection boxes to come! Ian Dickson, our Poppy Appeal Organiser, said “This demonstrates the enormous support and generosity of the good people and businesses across our nine villages for this wonderful cause and of course the dedication of all our poppy collectors.”

News From Beckford From the Beckford Registers Funeral: 5th November 2019 Timothy Noel Curr (of Teddington) : Died 11th October 2019 Beckford Christmas Services Our Carol Service will take place in Beckford Church at 6:00pm on Sunday 8th December and will follow the traditional pattern of lessons and carols in a candle-lit environment. It will be led by the Rural Dean, the Revd Sarah Dangerfield, whom we look forward to welcoming to our church of St John the Baptist. After the service, mincepies and wine will be served as we gather around the Christmas tree in the decorated church. The collection will be donated to the charity Crisis at Christmas which offers shelter and food – and much else – to some of the many homeless people on Britain’s streets during the Christmas season. There will be no Crib Service in Beckford this year but we are invited to join either with the congregation of St Barbara, Ashton under Hill, for their service at 3:30pm, or with the folk of St Giles, Bredon, at 5:00pm, both on Christmas Eve, 24th December. Also on Christmas Eve, Beckford Church will have a “midnight” Communion Service which will actually start at 11:30pm and will be led by the Revd Doug Chaplin, Discipleship and Lay Training Officer at the Diocese of Worcester. Doug led our Carol Service last year so is known to us and will be very welcome once again. This will be the only midnight Communion across the Beckford and Bredon Groups and we hope to be joined by many friends from other villages around the hill for this special and atmospheric service – the first Communion of Christmas. In an effort to alleviate the pressure on our clergy, there will be no Christingle Service in Beckford this year but we will be welcome at the service in St Giles, Bredon, which will be at 10:30am on Sunday 12th January 2020. This service, at which Christingles – oranges decked with candles and sweets – are distributed to children, raises funds for the Children’s Society. Details of other services in Beckford – and elsewhere – will of course be found in the schedule of services published inside the front cover and also on the church Christmas card which will have been delivered to every home in our parish. Beckford Coffee Mornings As mentioned in the November magazine, there will be no Coffee Morning in December as the usual day – the last Friday of the month – sits between the Christmas and New Year holidays. However, normal service will be resumed in January and it will be good to see everybody back for the friendly gathering on Friday 31st January. In the meantime, the organisers wish everyone a very happy and blessed Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year.

BECKFORD W.I. - November Report Our President, Margaret Darby welcomed 20 members and 1 visitor to the meeting in the Village Hall on Monday 11th November. This meeting was also the AGM so Maggie Vinson from GFWI had been invited to act as teller for the election of the President and committee members for the forthcoming year. Sam Wing presented her annual report on the finances and was pleased to report that despite there having been no major fund-raising events the finances were in good shape. Clare Henderson then presented the Secretary’s report and reminded members of the wide variety of speakers who had come to entertain over the last year. There seemed to be a theme of “journeys” both

actual travel stories and also journeys through life experiences. Members had visited the Butterfly Garden run by Chris Evans. Just recently members had visited the SS Great Britain in her dry dock in Bristol following the talk about her given by Ian Caskie in June. Margaret Darby then gave her report as President and said that her first year as President had been very enjoyable.

Beckford WI had hosted the Group Carol Service last Christmas, sent a team to take part in the County Quiz, had a Treasure Island themed stall at the Centenary Fair in Cirencester and had an exhibit in the Cathedral in Gloucester to mark the Centenary of the GFWI. The election of the new committee took place and it was good to see two new members joining the present committee who had all stood again for re-election. Margaret was unanimously re-elected as President and she thanked Maggie Vinson for overseeing the election and asked her to judge the Ursula Gowthorpe Rose bowl competition. The AGM being concluded the business of the normal meeting began. Members were asked to consider the support of two charities for the coming year, Linus quilts for children (see Project Linus UK for more information:projectlinusuk.org.uk) and fiddlemuffs for dementia patients. Members could make these items throughout the year and they would be distributed to the charities. In addition, newspapers would be collected regularly for the Vale Wildlife charity for animal bedding and recyclable materi-als would be collected to be taken to the Butterfly Garden where almost anything can be recycled! Christmas is almost upon us and members were going to the annual Carol Concert in Cheltenham Town Hall at the beginning of December and preparations were being made to attend the Group Carol service at the Methodist church in Tewkesbury on 21st December. Next year, the biannual Beckford Open Village event takes place on the first weekend in June. Members were asked to keep the date free as Beckford WI help with the Refreshments, although many members are also involved in opening their gardens for the event. Margaret then invited Briony Coupe to demonstrate the Christmas craft activities that she had prepared and members had a great time making Christmas tree decorations, festive coasters or Christmas cards. The Rose bowl competition was judged and the winner was Margaret Darby with her beautifully decorated goose egg. The theme having been “Take One Egg”. The next meeting is on Monday 9th December and is our Christmas bring and share meal. There will be some glittering entertainment and visitors are most welcome. Clare Henderson, Meeting Secretary

Beckford Community Village Hall Ltd

Refurbishment and new uses for the Old Social Club continue to be our main preoccupations at the hall. At the last meeting, having secured several quotations, we agreed a

scheme to remove the asbestos guttering and replace it with new, replace one double fire exit door and the side door, then replace the fascia boards under the gutters with white to match the other side of the hall and replace the single fire exit into the committee room. We are looking for grants to help pay for this work, and then will decide how to tackle the question of insulation, either external or internal. Before we can offer the premises of the Old Social Club for rent, we need to make some essential preparations. We are arranging with A&E for fire protection to be assessed and then certificated (as the hall already is), checking for necessary PAT testing, and undertaking a Health and Safety check. Our insurance has been extended to cover the premises, and we shall be fitting a Keysafe in addition to the one on the front of the hall. We need to arrange for someone to take responsibility for the heating system. The rent charged will be the same as that charged for the hall.

Although a few options for alternative use have appeared, we shall be going back to the commercial property consultant who reviewed the premises earlier in the year. He will be marketing the property and, if he succeeds in finding a good tenant for us, will make a one-off charge of 10% of the annual proceeds for his services.

David Smith has made an excellent job of redecorating the committee room for us, with walls in an attractive light grey 'polished pebble' in place of the rather over-familiar 'barley white'. This completes the restoration of the room after last summer's episode of vandalism. The toilets have also been redecorated.

The new 'Beckford Village Hall' Facebook page is now well established and carries news and information. It's a 'public' page, so anyone can post on it, and there is plenty of scope for more! Graham Galer, Secretary BCVH Ltd

At the time of writing we are sad to report that there has been a series of vandalism in some of our local churches so St Barbara’s has been closed during November. The police are involved and we hope to open again soon when the matter has been resolved. Many thanks to all who have helped and will have helped over the festive season. Thank you to the clergy who have supported us with leading our services at what has been a difficult time for the Bredon parishes.

ASHTON UNDER HILL W.I. - November Report

For our November meeting Ashton WI held a Members’ Night which went under the working title of “Getting to Know Your Neighbour”. We were not sure how this would go down, but it turned out to be a huge success. Many thanks to Marjy Facer whose idea this was, but who was unfortunately away for the actual evening. Ian Facer had used his mathematical skills to sort out a rota of changing groups which worked brilliantly. Each table had a different topic: work, life, experiences of where you lived, and a slightly more serious one on plastic pollution. A roomful of 27 ladies who know each other quite well are not shy of talking(!), and we ran over time as all participated with enthusiasm. We learned a lot of new things about each other, and indeed from each other. An idea to repeat. Birthday posies were handed out as usual and Chris Powell presented Barbara Moore with a bouquet as a thank you for making these for us. Recent visits have included a walk around Batsford Arboretum and a sunny morning at Whichford pottery, before the rainy weather kicked in. Both were wonderful trips to enjoy autumn at its best. Visits to the Arts centre for “The Sound of Music” and Envirosort re-cycling at Norton, Worcester, are coming up in November.

Worcestershire Federation hosted a lunch at the Chateau Impney, Droitwich in October. These are usually good occasions and this one was excellent. We all warmed to Jules Hudson, the TV presenter best known for ‘Escape to the Country’ and ‘Countryfile Diaries’. He had a most interesting background as an archaeologist in his home town of Colchester, then a spell at Sandhurst for Army training, not quite completed, but he has now gone back in a publicity role. So this confidence and knowledge has stood him in good stead for TV

work, both as producer and presenter. He is a great lover of the countryside and a recent book on “Walled Gardens of the National Trust” seems to unite his interests. The food was very good but unfortunately the room was extremely cold, the only blight on the event. Saving the best until last, Ashton WI felt flushed with success at the Annual Federation Meeting in Malvern. President Doreen Parsons gained first prize for her arrangement in a re-cycled container. Using plastic lemonade bottles sprayed purple and covered with twine she had created a very stylish container and used only water (not floral foam which we are trying to do without.) The theme of up-cycling was also the craft competition, and we were thrilled that Dawn Korner won this class and gained the glass bowl for Best in Show. Her Edwardian style jacket was exquisite; fashioned from two charity shop skirts, lined and finished with lace cuffs and hand braiding, it was greatly admired by everyone. Well done Dawn! The group entry was only one mark below the winning places so congratulation to the team who put together the entry for The Allotment. It has to be said that WI judges are incredibly strict – competitions are not for the faint-hearted. The speakers at the Meeting were very good. Denise Smythe–Wright gave a serious and very informative talk on Plastic Pollution in the oceans. She is a lecturer in climate science from the Oceanography Centre at Southampton so really knows the facts. We resolved to make more effort in cutting down on single use plastic and NOT over washing our clothes to save on micro fibres entering the chain of water down to the ocean. The Valentines choir from Kidderminster entertained us before lunch with their excellent singing in a variety of styles. The afternoon talk was totally different. Stewart Hillard had presented “The Great Sewing Bee” and was great fun, a natural communicator. He had started very young with knitting but his real love is quilting and he had brought along a huge selection, from modern designs to more traditional. His use of colour and style was very impressive. Thank you to the organisers for giving us such a varied and entertaining day. Our Christmas meal at Childswickham Inn with a special raffle is on 3rd December, 6:30pm for 7:00pm. The next meeting is on January 7th at 7:30pm in the Village Hall when Viv Ebbage will speak on her experiences on the “Costa Concordia”. All welcome.

Leonard Burn. Carol Singing in Alstone This year we plan to sing carols around Alstone in aid of the Children’s Society, on Friday 20th December. As usual we will be meeting at the bus shelter at 7 pm. Everyone is most welcome to join us and there will certainly be refreshments afterwards! Should there be any problems with the weather, we will get in touch and possibly sing the following or another evening. The Chapelries Remembrance Service, November 10th at Alstone The Chapelries Remembrance Service at Alstone was a memorable and simple one led by Revd. Leonard Burn. Our congregation ranged from 2 young school children and a baby to the over nineties. Many thanks to Leonard and everyone who came and contributed to the collection of over £70. The beneficiary this year is BLESMA, the non-profit-making registered British charity which helps all serving and ex-service men and women who have lost limbs, or lost the use of limbs or eyes. NEWS FROM OVERBURY A gentle and thoughtful All Souls service was held in St Faith’s on 4th November led by Rev Allison Davies. Those who took this opportunity to remember family and friends appreciated the comfort of readings, hymns and the lighting of candles. Refreshments afterwards provided the chance to share experiences and memories. It was humbling to meet people who have attended the service over many years, welcoming the chance to set time aside to remember with affection.

St Faith’s was delighted to host the wedding, conducted by Allison Davies, of Abi-Louise Carpenter and Michael Shields on November 9th. It was a very joyful event despite the horrible weather outside and we wish them a very long and happy married life together. Abi-Louise’s mother, Teresa, was responsible for creating the beautiful Poppy quilt hanging in

the church so it was very appropriate that the marriage should take place so close to Remembrance Sunday. In addition, we are hugely grateful to Teresa for skilfully repairing our red altar frontal which had been eaten by a mouse!

Remembrance Service at Overbury on November 10th On the 10th November the church was packed for the annual service of Remembrance, led by Reverend Captain Rick Tett, Church Army and former Royal Marine. The parade gathered in beautiful sunshine outside the Lychgate and was led into Church by the crucifer. Members of the British Legion were followed by the Guides, Brownies and Rainbows from Ashton, our local Community Police Officer, wreath bearers from all the villages, and the Standard Bearers. The Branch Standard was carried by Derril Green, and standards were also carried by the Guides and the Brownies. Hamish Sanger Davies played the Last Post and the Reveille on the trumpet and John Gill, President of the Beckford & Ashton under Hill Branch of the Royal British Legion read one lesson and Geoffrey Allen, Branch Treasurer read the other. The names of villagers who lost their lives during World War 2 were read out by Pat Chambers. At the end of the service, the procession made their way to the Lychgate where the congregation gathered to watch the wreaths being laid on behalf of the Parish Councils, the West Mercia Police, Guides and Brownies and local WIs. The Last Post and Reveille were sounded once more and Capt John Gill read the Kohima Epitaph. The collection raised amounted to a magnificent £575.11 for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

Christmas Services

Everyone is very welcome at our family Carol Service on December 15th at 4:00pm. Please bring your family and friends and we hope you will stay afterwards for refreshments and mince pies. As the build-up for Christmas continues, we are also looking forward to the annual Grasshoppers Nativity and Overbury First School carol service.

On Christmas Day itself we will celebrate with a Family Communion Service led by Rev Allison Davies at 11:00am and we will be delighted to see you. Again, do please bring family or anybody spending Christmas with you. We warmly welcome ALL ages on this special occasion whether or not you or they are regular churchgoers. Looking ahead to 2020 (hard to believe that 2019 is nearly over – it hardly seems to have started!), work on upgrading the church’s lighting will take place throughout January and February. 2019 Events in Overbury Overbury Street Market Surplus The net proceeds from our very successful 41st Street Market amounted to £4,784 which was shared as follows:- St Faith’s Church £1,500, Overbury Village Hall £2,000, Overbury Cricket Club £284, Overbury First School £1,000. Many thanks to all those who helped raise this huge sum in just two hours. Bonfire and Fireworks donations A full moon, blazing bonfire and stunning fireworks display, thanks to Sir Bruce Bossom’s generosity, entertained a large crowd to witness the cremation of a “Band of Guys”, the best won by Amie Lisle who lit the fire. Donations from the event raised £1,950 to be shared by the School and the Village Hall. Andrew John

THE TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS

The song “The Twelve Days of Christmas” is an English Christmas carol. One explanation of its origin is that from 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in Britain were not permitted to practice their religion openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for children. It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning and a hidden, deeper meaning. Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality which children could remember. “My true love” is God. A partridge in a pear tree is Jesus. Two turtle doves are the Old and New Testaments. Three French hens stand for faith, hope and love. Four calling birds are the four Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Five gold rings represent the first five books of the Old Testament, which describe humanity’s fall into sin and the great love of God in sending a Saviour. Six geese a-laying stand for the six days of creation. Seven swans a-swimming represent the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit: prophesy, serving, teaching, encouragement, contribution, leadership and mercy. Eight maids a-milking are the eight Beatitudes (the eight Blessings). Nine ladies dancing are the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Ten lords a-leaping are the Ten Commandments.
