    HALF-TIMBEREDHOUSE

There is a large variety of half-timbered houses in Alsace, depending on the area (plain ormountain) and the use of the build-ing (animal breeding, agriculture orviniculture). The shapes of the interlacingbeams had symbolic value: thediamond represented fertility, thecross of St Andr protection andmultiplication (diamond and crosssometimes cross over), and slant-

ing posts reflected the silhouetteof man. Inscriptions of sun cycles, tulips and 5 or 6 pointed stars werebelieved to protect the house fromlightening, fire, witches and otherevils. Half-timbering and faadeswere enhanced with sculpturesand embellished with painted pat-terns. The steeply sloping roof (toprevent snow from collecting) wasmade of Biberschwanz, tiles inthe shape of a beavers tail. Inside, only the main room, la Stube, washeated, along with the kitchen. Some experts claim that, ratherthan being purely symbolic, each

part of the half-timbering playeda very specific and important rolewhen it came to shoring up thestructure.

    Lay siegeto history!

n Alsace, budding historians can travel through time and relivethe days o chivalrous knights whilst visiting the multiple ortifedcastles and hearing the legends o the men who built them. Thecountless churches, chapels and historic buildings, all richly ornate,

reect the development o both Romanesque art and Alsatian Gothicism.

Let yoursel be carried away with emotion and admiration at the memorialsites, museums and other spots o outstanding beauty. The historic centreo Strasbourg, capital o Europe with 2,000 years worth o history, is aUNESCO World Heritage site. On 7 July 2008, it was joined by Neu-Brisach, with its star ortifcations designed by Vauban. Such monuments, along with many others, bear witness to Alsaces turbulent past.

    Religious heritage

Alsace is a spiritual region.Romanesque art spans a longperiod and is characterised bysome remarkable churches.Boosted by urban development,Gothic art reaches its pinnaclewith Strasbourg Cathedral. Afterthe Thirty Years War, wonder-ful edifices were constructed in

    Baroque style.

In numerous vi l lages, twochurches reflect the two Catholicand Protestant communities. Thedensity of rural synagogues dem-onstrates the size of the Jewishcommunity. Today, Alsace remainsthe most multi-confessional regionin France.
