    CONNECTING, MOVING

    FORWARD AND FOCUSING ON MEMBERSHIP”

    Audrey Collins

Spring Ahead....Hopefully, SOON! This sentiment leads me to perhaps the most important part ofmy theme, MOVING FORWARD. I hope that you areconsidering this aspect for all of your chapters. I would suggestthat we can look for new members, new leaders and new ideas. I’ve shared many suggestions for new members and I amhearing some encouraging reports. We have chapters gainingnew members, which is very exciting. I love to think that thereare new women enjoying the many benefits of DKGmembership! We have also had a positive report fromInternational regarding our membership. Our total membershiphas not increased, but the rate of decrease has improved. I viewthat as a first step for our state to build upon. Keep up the goodwork building your chapters! As we work to add new members, we must also focus ongrowing new leaders. I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again. Ourorganization cannot move forward without LEADERSHIP.Providing these opportunities is one benefit of membership butwe must encourage individuals to take advantage of what isavailable to them. We can’t expect to recruit ready-made leadersbut we should be nurturing them. These paths are very individualand may move along a path of chapter responsibilities and officesto state involvement in committees and projects. Ultimately, wouldn’t it be great to be in a position where we aren’t“recycling” chapter presidents and we have a list of names ofwomen looking for opportunities to serve as committee chairsand officers for the state organization. I think this is a worthygoal for all of us. New ideas are vital to the survival and success of ourorganization. We must respond to changes in expectations of ourmembers and potential members. The field of education is notwhat it used to be. Demands placed upon teachers are not whatthey used to be. Our organization cannot be what it used to be.Each chapter needs to respond to change and create change in itsown way. International has many tools available to assist inprocessing change and strengthening chapters. Your state officersand leaders will also support these efforts if you call upon them. In closing, I encourage each of you to think about newmembers, new leaders and new ideas. Make your own “to do”list, dream sheet, whatever works for you to reflect on whatyou’d like to accomplish/help facilitate/participate in, etc. in yourDKG membership. Consider what you can do to improve yourchapter, what connections you want to build or re-kindle, what

you can gain from attending State Convention April 26-28 inGreat Falls, what resources you might want to utilize from theinternational website...the possibilities are endless. As always, please get in touch with me if there is anything I cando to assist you or encourage you in your DKG journey.

Reminders from the State TreasurerMontana State Organization Treasurer Maureen Watt (Omicron)

Dues Processing Procedure... Training for chapter treasurers will be provided at State Convention. All chapters should have arepresentative there to learn about the dues processing. This should be the chapter treasurer or the personwho will be doing the processing. You will need your membership number to start. If you don’t knowit, you may contact me at 406-563-2031 or [email protected]. The chapter treasurer needs to have access to the DKG website. Here are the steps that you mayfollow: The DKG website available to all of our members (www.dkg.org) already includes an accountset up for you. Simply sign in where prompted or use the “sign in” button in the top right side of thewebsite. Your username is your six digit member ID and the default password is dkg2014society. Once you have logged in, please change your password to a preferred one in the My Account areaunder the My DKG tab. You can also create a profile, choose to be a part of the social communities andaccess the members-only directory. You can also verify your contact information, including email, andmodify it where necessary.

Effective November 6, 2018 Because of changes in security standards and system upgrades, users must modify their passwordsto meet the new security requirements. Passwords MUST now include seven (7) characters - includingat least one letter and one number. I would encourage all treasurers to log onto the website and choose Chapter Connect in the redportion of the page. You will see four PowerPoint Presentations. The three that you need to review are:Overview New Dues Training for US Treasurer, Treasurer Practice Site, Dues Processing and theTreasurer Practice Site-Add, Transfer and Reinstate. This will help you to learn about the new process. At the convention, I will be available to help you get started.

    COMMITTEE REPORTS:Membership

2nd Vice President Doris Tollefson (Alpha Zeta)

Chapters should be well into their DKG year with projects and activities happening right and left.Hopefully, new members have been invited and initiated. It would be a meaningful gesture if your newmembers were invited to attend the state convention in Great Falls on April 26-28. It would be evenbetter if someone could bring a whole car load of members to the convention. They are fun and arelearning experiences not only for long time members but also for new members. Has your chapter updated member biographical data sheets recently? If you cannot remember the lasttime they were updated, then it is time to drag them out and update them. If Member Biographical DataSheet is a foreign term for you, then your chapter certainly needs to complete one for each member. Theforms can be downloaded from the DKG website. If you have not visited the DKG website, this is what you need to do to find Form 82, the MemberBiographical Data Sheet. Log in to the “Member Home” part of the website by clicking on those wordsat the top of the Home Page. A new screen will appear, and type in your member number found on yourmember card you received when you paid your dues. Then create a password, if you have not alreadydone so, using at least seven (7) characters including at least one letter and one number. Once you areon the Member Home page, click on Forms; then click on Membership, and finally Form 82. Downloadthe form and make copies for every member in your chapter. Have every member fill out this form and return it to the chapter president or the membershipchairman. You can take time at a meeting to complete Form 82, and after that once a year, update theforms. Mailing addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers change, and by updating Form 82, your information is correct and up-to-date. Also, make sure that your emergency contact information iscurrent. It is important to know who to contact in the case of an emergency. As you may or may not know, DKG now offers a new membership category: Collegiate member. Forthose chapters in or near areas that have colleges, universities or centers for higher learning, this is agreat opportunity to tap into a new and refreshing resource. Offering membership to young womenpursuing a career in education not only helps grow our membership but also shows support to youngwomen who often need some support. Expanding our circle of membership certainly makes it an excitingtime to be in DKG.

    Expansion Chairman Madalen Sugrue, (Omicron)

The Expansion Committee stands at the ready to carry out theduties assigned to them to assist in establishing new chapters andsupporting existing chapters. Our state has not established a new chapter in a very long timeand we have had chapters dissolve before any intervention couldoccur. Membership is an undeniable challenge. However, withchanges in our governing documents made at our last internationalconvention, collegiate membership is now a possibility. This may bean avenue to consider when looking for members. It could be a wayof establishing a chapter in an area where none currently exist orstrengthening a chapter that is struggling. The Expansion Committeewould encourage you to consider this option. We would also invite everyone to utilize the resources availablefrom International to strengthen your chapter. Here is a link from theDKG website that would go a long way in assessing and buildingchapters: https://www.dkg.org/DKGMember/Resources/ChapterStrengthening.aspx. You can find it on the website by logging in asa member, going to Tools, clicking on Chapter Tools, clicking onChapter Strengthening and scrolling down to Strategies for aPositive Chapter Environment. It’s very comprehensive and hassome great ideas. There are many other resources there as well. There really is no reason to re-invent the wheel! As always, our committee, along with the membershipcommittee, and state offices are available o assist you and supportyour chapter in any way possible. Please call upon us if we can beof any help.

    HistoryChairman Sharon ‘Cookie’ Bashor (Rho)

Chapter Presidents, please remind your history/scrapbook chairthat the second page of the scrapbook for the State President’s bookis due by State Convention or before if you have it finished. Manythanks for those that have already sent the first page! Now, we all need to get organized and finish up our DKG year ina positive productive manner by getting the scrapbook pagescompleted. My goal is to have each chapter represented in thePresident’s book. Could you please help by gathering materials andcompleting the required pages. If you have questions, please contactme at [email protected].

    MusicChairman Lorran Depner (Alpha Gamma)

DKG has a wonderful history of song using music as a basis formeetings and ceremonies. There have been many songbookspublished that cover every aspect of membership in theorganization. Whether it is honoring our country and flag, officerprocessions, break time, meal time, ceremonies, or the end of day.DKG has used music to help events run with continuity. Our statehas very talented and capable vocalists and instrumentalists thathave dedicated hours to providing music over the years for theseevents. The music committee is going to work hard making suremusic is a big part of the upcoming convention, providing thisseamless continuity for the event. There are plans for a Convention Choir and music is beingselected that goes along with our convention theme. Depending oninterest at our rehearsal, we will prepare selections for a banquetperformance or if we lack participation, we will brainstorm alternatemusical activities to enhance our time together.

DKG is a changing organization. It is up to us as key womeneducators to keep up with these changes and adapt as necessary.Music is needed at our events - it is uplifting for the body and souland it is at the root of who we are. Change is inevitable - let us useour voices and instruments to bring everyone together for thecommon purpose of our organization.

    Jewel Halverson1932-2019

Jewel ‘Julie’ Halverson was born May14, 1932. She grew up on a ranch inGrove Creek Valley near Fishtail,Montana, the youngest child of Martinand Ida Mattson. She had many pleasantmemories of her early education startingin a typical Montana rural one-roomschool. She had a culture shock as herparents retired from the ranch and moved

to Billings. Her education continued at Lincoln Junior High,Billings Senior and Eastern Montana College. Her parents werevery pro-education and strong school supporters. Both Julie and herolder sister ended up as teachers. During college, she was active in drama and editor of thecollege newspaper. Julie met her future husband, Earl, in collegeand they married on August 16, 1952. After Julie and her husbandEarl moved to Harlowton, Montana, she wasn’t allowed to teach inthe same school system as her husband. She worked as a steno clerkand other jobs before becoming a stay-at-home mom for their sonMark and their daughter Lori. Earl was a longtime principal atLincoln and Lewis and Clark Junior High Schools. Wanting herchildren to have the same higher education opportunities, Juliereturned to EMC in the seventies, specializing in Early ChildhoodEducation. She embraced the non-traditional student role andbecame known as the “Lollies” (little old ladies). Billings Schoolsintroduced kindergarten in 1975; she was one of the 40 teachershired. It was a wild beginning at Newman School. Julie’s energy, enthusiasm and positive attitude helped her stay in this challengingposition for 20 years. Julie retired from the classroom in 1995. Julie belonged to many professional organizations: The DeltaKappa Gamma Society International, NEA, BEA, Midland EmpireReading Council and National Reading Council. She was an activepart of many district committees: art, social studies, computer, science, English, report card revision and library review. She wasa trainer for the Second Step program for both teachers and parents.Julie received the District Golden Apple Award in 1987. This wasespecially gratifying because the nomination came from the schoolhousekeeper who collected letters from countless former students. It was amazing to find out what students remembered aboutkindergarten. Julie was a lifelong learner, active after retirement in Sow andGrow Garden Club, Audubon, Zoo Montana horticultural board,

Global Grannies and water exercise. She was an avid reader and acrossword puzzle maniac! Julie and her husband Earl enjoyedretirement in Billings and celebrated 66 years together. Juliepromoted education through her fun, story-filled life. submitted by Cindy Osland (Alpha Alpha) ÄÊÃ Ä ÊÃ Ä ÊÃ ÄÊÃ ÄÊÃ Ä ÊÃ Ä ÊÃ ÄÊÃ ÄÊÃ Ä ÊÃ
