SororCarole Pinkett, Chairman, spoke on behalf ofthe chapter donating several large plants tobe given to the new homeowners. ESP 1908 Centennial WalkAs predicted, the HMAC 1908 GlobalCentennial Walk was a huge success.Thanks to Sorors Tamara Cubit, HelenHouston and Demetria Williams, whorepresented in organizing the event inconjunction with HMAC. On Saturday, June28, 2008 over 500 sorors (150 were Sorors), family members, friends and otherGreeks joined AKA, as we walked,simultaneously, around the world incelebration of our centennial. Soror Valarie A. McKenzie transferred to Alpha Kappa Omega at the beginning of 2008 from Gamma ZetaOmega, in Miami, Florida, where she was initiated in December 1985. She received an MBA from Nova South-eastern University (1995) and went to undergraduate school at Florida International University (1985). In AlphaKappa Omega, she serves on the High School Leadership Development and one of the Non-Traditional Entre-preneurs (Economic Development) Committees. In Gamma Zeta Omega she worked on the Ivy Rosettes, theBlack Family and Economics committees and served as Anti-Tamiouchos. She is an active member of HigherDimension Church, where she is currently a facilitator within the church’s Christian Education Department.She is the founder and President of inPrep, Inc. Before starting the consulting and coachingbusiness, extensive leadership experience was gained from her 21-year career with AmericanExpress. She is recognized for her ability to identify problems, generate solutions thatimprove organizational effectiveness and coach others to achieve their goals. She hasworked in various capacities: Leadership Development Consultant, Leadership Advisor,Organizational Development Consultant, and Manager of Quality and Training.

Focus GroupPrior to the June Sorority meeting from 10:00 a.m.-10:45a.m., Sorors participated in the “Sickle Cell FocusGroup” presentation and discussion.
Thanks to Soror Carole Pinkett and your generosity, wecollected over $700.00 to assist with summer camp forchildren effected by Sickle Cell.

“Little Known Alpha Kappa Omega History Facts”September 2008
1. Soror Maurie Carpenter, who taught secondary school for 43 years in Texas and
Kansas, was honored in Who’s Who Among American Teachers, several times during her
teaching career.
2. Soror Lucy Bremond chaired Alpha Kappa Omega’s first Corporate Sponsor committee in
1995 and secured the first corporate donation from Shell Oil. As a
long-time executive with General Electric, she secured nearly a
decade of financial support from GE, funding such programs as
ONTRACK, Project READ, Partnership in Math and Science (PIMS), TAAS
Tutorials at Madison High School, Hazel’s Pets, and the Great Book
Escape.
3. Soror Lena Gilmore was initiated into the Gamma Psi chapter at Texas Southern
University in 1953. A retired teacher with HISD, she has held the office of Anti-
Grammateus, Reporter to the Ivy Leaf and Chairperson of the Publicity and Public
Relations committees.
4. In 2008, Soror Lydia Brew published a novel entitled, “Ungolden Silence”. The book was
presented to the public at a book signing on February 10, 2008 at Third World Imports &
Tours.
5. From 1997–2000, Alpha Kappa Omega’s foundation awarded $600,000 in scholarships to
deserving students. Alpha Kappa Omega had a total of sixty-four Sorors listed in Who’s
Who in Alpha Kappa Alpha from 1967-1968.
6. Alpha Kappa Omega, under the leadership of Soror Charlotte K. Bryant (1981-1984),
initiated Houston’s first all Greek voter registration, voter education and voter
participation political activity.
7. The “ONTRACK” program was a three year program (January 1999-May 2002), designed to
keep at-risk children in grades 3 through 6 focused on excelling academically. “ONTRACK”
was the acronym for Organizing, Nurturing, Team Building, Respecting, Achieving,
Character Building and Knowledge.
8. Soror Etta Hill has been an authorized vendor for Alpha Kappa Alpha since 1993. She is
the owner of The Smart Cookie Gift Service. Having served as a delegate to the
Centennial Boule in Washington, D.C., Soror Etta has also served the community as a
board member of the YWCA, Young Audiences of Houston and the Houston Chapter of
Jack & Jill of America.
9. In 1982, Alpha Kappa Omega initiated its first community health fair. The 1982 fair
was noted for its solicitation of services for many of the city’s top medical and health
providers.
