It is indeed an honor and a pleasure to extend a sisterly, heartfelt welcome to each of you attending the 2017 West Virginia Cluster Conference. Your presence confirms your commitment to leadership and service. Planning and organizing a conference requires tireless hours of work from numerous Sorors and often times family members as well. Special thanks to Soror Daton Leonard Dean, Cluster Coordinator, Soror Deja Smoot, Undergraduate Cluster Coordinator, and the West Virginia host chapters, Beta Beta Omega and Nu. I commend your exemplary planning and warm hospitality. The 2014-2018 program,” Launching New Dimensions of Service,” continues to provide opportunities to address both local and global communities’ needs in traditional and innovative ways through our global community impact days. Cluster presentations have been designed to strengthen your ability to effectively contribute to our sisterhood and our extended communities. I encourage you to take full advantage of all that is offered during the day, as well as the joy that comes from connecting with Sorors whom you have not seen since last year. Greetings Sorors, It is indeed a pleasure to represent the members of the Wild and Wonderful West Virginia Cluster of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. I am pleased to extend a special greeting to those attending the 2017 WV Cluster Retreat hosted by the Bold and Beautiful members of Beta Beta Omega Chapter in Charleston, WV. For those who have traveled from beyond the Mountain State I hope that you will take time to stroll along the historic campus of West Virginia State University, one of two Historically Black Colleges and Universities located in our state.

This year’s theme, “Launching New Dimensions: Building for the Future” will come to life as we continue to Launch New Dimensions of Service in the Mountain State! Throughout the day, there will be wonderful workshops, opportunities to network within our Cluster, and a rededication to our “Sisterhood so dear”. The numerous workshop sessions will focus on our programs, membership intake, connections, and protecting our brand. The 2017 West Virginia Cluster Retreat is a catalyst for growth and opportunity for all of our chapters, enabling us to gather and experience our excellent Sisterhood. Greetings Sorors, It is with great delight that I welcome you to Institute, West Virginia for our 2016 West Virginia Cluster Conference. On behalf of all West Virginia undergraduates, I extend a special thank you to our host chapters Beta Beta Omega and Nu Chapters for their efforts to make today’s event a success. It is an honor to be the newly appointed West Virginia Undergraduate Cluster Coordinator. I thank Madam Regional Director Toni S. Kendrick, my Graduate Advisor Patricia Wilson, and my Nu chapter Sorors for their love and support as I continue this journey. I am ecstatic to join everyone today for a time of service and fellowship. As a student, having a new backpack, pencils, and pens is a great first step to a successful year. Sorors our efforts today will ensure that students across our region have the necessary tools to succeed. As we continue on our journey of “Launching New Dimensions of Service,” let us take this opportunity to expand our mission of providing “Service to All Mankind.” One of the focuses of our cluster retreat is our “One Million Backpack Project”. Though one of our focuses for this meeting is our backpack project, let us not forget that this is a time of fellowship and togetherness. Soror Toni S. Kendrick Great Lakes Regional Director

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated

Soror Toni S. Kendrick was elected to serve as the Great Lakes Regional Director for 2014-2016 at the 83rd Great Lakes Regional Conference. She was re-elected for a second term (2016-2018) at the 85th Great Lakes Regional Conference. A Silver Star and Life Member, Soror Toni has dedicated more than 40 years of service to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. She is an active member of Alpha Alpha Omega Chapter in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where she served two terms as Basileus. Soror Toni was initiated into Alpha Sigma Chapter and she is a trailblazing charter member of Kappa Beta Chapter at the California University of Pennsylvania. She has held a variety of leadership roles in the Great Lakes Region including Great Lakes Cluster Coordinator and Northern Ohio/Western Pennsylvania Cluster Coordinator. Additionally, Soror Toni served as the Great Lakes Representative to the International Connection Committee. Soror Toni earned a BS in Early Childhood Education from the California University of Pennsylvania and a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Pittsburgh. After 37 years in the Pittsburgh Public School System, she retired gracefully after having served as a teacher, counselor, conflict mediator, assistant principal, and principal. In recognition of her selfless commitment to community service, Soror Toni has received numerous awards and recognition including Who’s Who in Black Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Courier’s 50 Women of Excellence Award, the Woman of Principal’s Outstanding Leadership Award, the Negro Business Professional Women’s Club, Inc.’s Professional Woman of the Year Award, and the American Heart Association’s Outstanding Community Service Award.

Her life motto is “People may doubt what you say, but they believe what you do.”

Soror Nancy L. Quarles Great Lakes Representative to the International Nominating Committee

Soror Nancy Quarles is a member of Pi Tau Omega, through the years she has served as Basileus, Connection Coordinator, Public Relation Chairman, and a host of other positions in the chapter. Soror Quarles held the position of Regional Parliamentarian, served on the International Constitution Committee, Connection Committee, and Reinstatement Committee. She currently is a member of the International Nomination Committee. As an elected official, Soror Nancy has served mankind as a member of the Michigan House of Representatives, and currently, she is an Oakland County Commissioner and holds the position of the Vice Chairman of the Michigan Democratic Party. She is an active member of Women Impacting Public Policy, the National Parliamentary Association, National Congress of Black Women, and Triumph Church. With main and might Nancy have received a Ph.D. in public administration from Western Michigan University and was a Thurgood Marshall Fellow. She is a faculty member at Central Michigan University.

Soror Carol Brown Turner Great Lakes Representative to the International Program Committee

Soror Carol Turner is the Alpha Kappa Alpha Great Lakes Region Representative to the International Program Committee. She is honored to work with chapters to implement the Sorority’s Launching New Dimensions of Service Program. Soror Carol is a silver star and life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She originates from Milwaukee, Wisconsin and migrated to Michigan 18 years ago. She is married to Lennie Turner and has two sons, Brandon and Jordan. Professionally, Soror Carol is an Information Technology Senior Project Manager at the Auto Club Group. She received the United Health Group elite Make I.T. Happen award for outstanding project management. Soror Carol holds a bachelor degree in Finance from the University of Wisconsin and a MBA degree in Information Systems from Keller Graduate School of Management as well as certifications in Project Management and SCRUM Agile Delivery. Soror Carol enjoys working with youth. Through the years, she has mentored young ladies, served as a Cub Scoutmaster, managed after-school tutorial programs, and participated in numerous community service activities impacting children and families. In addition to her IT Award, Soror Carol Turner has been inducted into the INROADS National Alumni Hall of Fame and the Wisconsin Hall Fame. During her stay in Wisconsin, she received the AKA chapter’s sorority member of year, outstanding community service and trailblazer awards. She also received the covenant Alpha Kappa Alpha Central Region Outstanding Graduate Chapter Basileus Award. Soror Carol has been an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority for 39 years. She was initiated in Epsilon Delta Chapter at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Through the years, Soror Carol has served in many positions including basileus, anti-basileus, graduate advisor and all most every other chapter office and chairman of numerous committees. Currently, she is the Epistoleus of the Pi Tau Omega Chapter located in Southfield, Michigan. Serving the community is at the heart of everything Soror Carol does.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

Target I: Educational Enrichment

ASCEND℠ Began final phase of ASCEND with 20 students. Had orientation with students and families on

September 17, 2017. Have taken students to a leadership conference at Marshall University and planning a trip to WVU on Nov. 4, 2017. Also a planning a shadowing day at WV State University and working on a partnership with the WV Manufacturers Association Education Program.

One Million Backpacks℠ Alpha Omicron Omega continues its partnership with the Keep Your Faith

Organization of Charleston, WV annual back drive in August. In process of collecting backpacks to be donated at Cluster and to Piedmont Elementary School.

Think HBCU℠ Alpha Omicron Omega awarded a scholarship through the WVSU foundation.

Target II: Health Promotion Alzheimer's Disease and Caregiver Support Program AOO hosted a program on the June 21, 2017, as part of the

Longest Day activities. The chapter partnered with Gamma Chi Omega and the WV Alzheimer’s Association to host Songs and Praise to Remember. This service brought awareness and information to the community about Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia. A spokesperson from the Association served as the keynote.

Stroke and Heart Disease Awareness AOO member, Bunmi Kusimo, a licensed yoga instructed, led a free yoga class for the public as part of Pink Goes Red.

Target III: Family Strengthening Childhood Hunger: The chapter invites the church communities and others to support local pantries. This

year, AOO is supporting Piedmont Elementary and Riverside HS food pantries.

Family Seasonal Wraps℠ AOO adopted a large family that was recently burned out of their home as part of

the Season Wraps campaign this fall. Fiscal Responsibility Programs The chapter is working with Karen Williams of Gamma Chi Omega to host

the Dave Ramsey Fiscal Responsibility workshop this year.

Target IV: Environmental Ownership

AKA 1908 Playground Project℠ AOO participated in the Impact Day of Service in May 2017 by support

refurbishing the Boys and Girls Club of Charleston’s playground.

Restore, Refresh and Renew Project℠/Acts of Green Program℠ AOO is helping to spread awareness about

the Habitat for Humanity Restore’s Latex Paint recycling program. In the spring, the chapter will collect latex paint and donate it to Restore which will then mix the paints into new colors.

Community Impact Days Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service (January) Sorors participated in a MLK service in January a

community meeting following to address educational issues facing the community. School and will be collect again at October meeting and donated for the school’s pantry

Community Collaboration/Projects (including NPHC activities) Continued work to resurrect the local National Panhellenic Council to support community efforts and

activities. Supported Dream Chasers’ mentoring program’s success initiative at Mary C. Snow Elementary School, as well as the school’s after school program. Working with HOPE Community Development Corporation, the Tuesday Morning and the Charleston Branch NAACP to address slum and blighted properties in parts of the city of Charleston. Supporting West Virginia University to send students to the WVU Career Day in Morgantown. Supported and collaborated with WV CARE to promote voter registration for the 2018 election. Supported the Marshall University Minority Healthcare Summer Camp by getting students to apply for the opportunity. Three students were accepted.

Chapter Events/Special Programs (including sisterly relations activities) AOO hosted Founder’s Day in 2017 and recognized three long-time public servants. AOO participates in

monthly NAACP meetings to stay engaged in social and social justice issues in the state. Members of the chapter attend weekly community meetings to stay informed of economic development, crime, education and other issues facing the black community in the greater Charleston area. Chapter participates in secret Soror, a chapter leadership mentor program, and an array of reclamation activities including an Ice Cream Social in July 1017. Members attended the regional conference in 2017 and Leadership in July. AOO also had its annual standards retreat in August 2017 to plan for upcoming year.

Recruitment and Reactivation: December 2016 AOO hosted a Christmas Brunch and invited inactive members as well as those interested in

membership. Invited inactive Sorors to Founders Day in February 2017, and hosted an Ice Cream Social in July 2017. Inactive Sorors were invited to the annual retreat and luncheon in August 2017. AOO made contact with several inactive Sorors and interested women at the WV State University Homecoming as the chapter hosted a tailgate tent. Since the last Cluster AOO has had three Sorors reactivate and two transfer membership to the chapter. AOO also had MIP in June 2017 bringing one new Soror into the sisterhood.

Summer Day Camp for Future Educators for rising 10th-12th graders was held on the campus of WVSU in conjunction with the Teacher Education Program the first week of June 2016.

One Million Backpacks℠

Collected and donated 92 backpacks and 300+ individual supplies in 2016 at meetings and through partnerships with WVU Extension Offices in Kanawha, Putnam, and Boone Counties.

Think HBCU℠ -

Members took part in WVSU Cares Day V provided community service at Mary C. Snow Elementary School. Chapter continues to maintain two scholarships at WVSU. Donated $10.000 to the West Virginia State University.

Target II: Health Promotion

Alzheimer's disease and Caregiver Support Program

Collaborated with Never Give-up fitness center Raised money highest amount for Greek Letter Organization in WV during activities on the Longest Day.

Target III: Family Strengthening

Childhood Hunger Initiatives Adopted Middle School Students during Christmas providing meals and other items for each and

his/her family. Worked with the Sojourners Women’s Shelter to provide gifts for residents and personal items

needed with a majority geared towards African American Women.

Family Seasonal Wraps℠

Participated in the Purse Project, donating 45 purses full of supplies for women and children. Collected and donated 35 coats, hats, and gloves to various church organizations.

AKA 1908 Playground Project℠

As part of WVSU Cares Day members of and Nu cleaned and prepared garden beds and ongoing support for the community garden at Mary C. Snow.

Acts of Green Program℠

Sponsored Recycling activity with the Martin Luther King Community Center Afterschool Program to create safe Bird Feeders with students and community members.

Planned and implemented an Upcycling Evening of Enjoyment where members turned old t-shirts into totes that were later filled with toiletries and donated to the Domestic Violence Coalition.

Target II: Health Promotion Alzheimer's Disease and Caregiver Support Program The chapter observed Alzheimer’s

Awareness Day by attending a luncheon at St. Mary’s Hospital that present information about the Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, including information on detection, causes and risk factors, stages on the disease and treatment. The chapter released purple balloons in honor and memory of those with Alzheimer’s.

Stroke and Heart Disease Awareness The chapter participated in the “Pink Goes Red for Heart Health Day” at Sixteenth Street Missionary Baptist Church in Huntington, West Virginia Soror Marie Redd was a stylist. Sorors wore Red in support of this Day.

Target III: Family Strengthening Childhood Hunger Initiatives -The chapter collected and donated food to the River Cities

Harvest Food Bank in Ashland, Kentucky.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

Target I: Educational Enrichment Three Sorors have been trained as part of the “Read Aloud” program of West Virginia

designed to read to elementary school students. The ASCEND program began in October 2016 with students and parents attending an overview and “get acquainted” activities. Stratton Elementary, our partner school, received resources for their school library through our “Books and Backpacks” donation in the Spring. Members of the chapter were asked to “Think HBCU” and wear supporting apparel at chapter meeting. A $500 scholarship was awarded to a local student at Woodrow Wilson H.S. who will be attending Howard University this fall.

Target II: Health Promotion During Heart Healthy Month the chapter held a Zumba workout at the Southern West

Virginia YMCA. In cooperation with Community Impact Days, our focus for the National Alliance of Mental Illness included members interacting with Senior Citizens and providing literature on Depression and Combatting Illness among Seniors and Caregivers. An emergency medication card used to list all medications and special instructions was given to participants as a reminder to carry an emergency card listing all important medications. Sorors and friends donated over $100.00 to the Alzheimer Association during the annual “Walk to End Alzheimer’s.”

Target III: Family Strengthening Donations to the local Food Pantry will be collected. Seasonal Wraps, including items for

women, men and children, were collected and given to the Women’s Resource Center. Sorors designed bowls as part of the Empty Bowls Project organized by 110 Marshall and the Quota Club.100% of the proceeds go to the local organizations that fight hunger within the surrounding area. The baseball field at Woodrow Wilson High School was renamed for local citizen and coach, Thomas Parham, due in part to the efforts of Golden Soror Sheilah Brown.

Target IV: Environmental Ownership The chapter continues to support and practice the “Go Green” motto by producing

documents and reports digitally.

Target V: Global Impact Members of the chapter, active and inactive, were invited in March to sew Little Dresses for

Africa, Part II. The breakout room, use of sewing machines, and sewing tools, were once again provided by JoAnn Fabrics.

Community Impact Days/Chapter Events During the M.L. King Day of Service 10 Blizzard Boxes were given to senior members of

the community. Sorors were represented at the planning process and registration of children and families at the annual Heart of God Ministries Back to School Event on August 5tth.

Active and inactive members of the chapter served food to over 700 individuals and gave away over 600 backpacks.

First Annual Employment Job Fair held at the Raleigh County Commission on Aging, where over 100 individuals received information or applications.

Legacies of Sorors within the chapter were honored with special keychains and recognition of service among chapter members.

Sorors attended the viewing of the movie Hidden Figures. Active and inactive, attended a “Tea and Monologue” at St Stephens Episcopal Church in

Lewisburg, WV. Not only did they witness the naming of the street Katherine Johnson Way, but also interacted with Sorors from nearby chapters.

Campus Service/Social Activities Spa Night was done in promotion of maintaining proper health and personal hygiene for all

students at West Virginia State University. Founders’ Day Celebration hosted by Nu chapter held to celebrate 109 years of sisterhood and

service. The program was hosted at West Virginia State University. Bake sales held on campus to raise money and awareness for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Programs. Soror Senaia Harris often attends community events, visits the Charleston CAMC Children’s

Hospital, and visits local elementary schools and community organizations to promote the importance of literacy representing Nu chapter and WVSU.

Joint Activities with Graduate Chapter Bowling with Beta Beta Omega Nu chapter Sorors bowled with members of Beta Beta Omega

chapter in support of Pink Goes Red and to improve Sisterly Relations.

Chapter Awards/Honors/Recognition Soror Ayanna Wynn was awarded the New Emerging Leader Award (2016-2017) by

the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life.

Program Highlights Children’s Home Society of West Virginia: Eta Zeta makes visits to the children’s

home to spend time with the children that currently reside in the home and to

volunteer services relating to the up keep of the facility.

Self-Care Series: Self-Care is a series started by Eta Zeta where the objective is to

encourage students and the community to implement time in their day that is geared

towards taking care of themselves. Eta Zeta’s first Self-Care event was titled “My

Mane, My Crown” which emphasized the importance of hair and provide good tips

for maintain healthy hair.

Boys and Girls Club: Members of Eta Zeta visited a Boys and Girls Club facility in

Huntington, West Virginia to clean up the recreation center and gym equipment for

the after-school program. Eta Zeta was asked to assist in implementing another after

school program geared towards young girls which would place importance on

education and preparing for college life.

Community Collaboration/Projects Women’s History Month Kickoff: The Sorors of Eta Zeta hosted a Women’s

History Month Kickoff with other members of the National Panhellenic Council to

showcase powerful women in history, with the guest speaker being Ms. Brandi Jacob-

Jones, the Senior Vice President of Operations at Marshall University.

Pink Goes Red: To promote a healthier lifestyle for college students, Eta Zeta and

the Theta Omega Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated hosted

“Zumba with the AKA’s and Deltas” at the Marshall University Rec Center.

Black Out Day: The Eta Zeta Chapter, Marshall University Black United Students,

and other National Panhellenic organizations participated in a simple but effective

way to kick-off black history month by wearing all black on February 1.

A.D. Lewis Center Cleanup: Eta Zeta Chapter and other National Panhellenic

organizations, visited the A.D Lewis Community Center to participate in cleaning up

the outside field of the center.
