We welcome you to the Alpha Iota State-Michigan DKG 2018 Fall Conference and Executive Board Meeting here at the H Hotel in beautiful Midland, Michi-gan. We have the opportunity to make decisions which can strengthen our Society and impact education worldwide. I hope you have the opportunity tonight to enjoy the early session, Important Women in Michigan History, with Judy Evers, and then the fellowship and camaraderie after the Board meeting. Our meeting will begin at 8:00 p.m.

Dr. Ranae Beyerlein and our Program of Work Committee have sought to provide interesting and informative breakout sessions which will begin after a brief general meeting on Saturday morning. The At a Glance sheet can be your guide to the sessions. You will also have an opportunity to shop at the chapter sales and Funding Our Purposes Auction located in the Foyer. The money raised at the auction benefits Funding Our Pur-poses (World Fellowship, various scholarships and our Member-to-Member Fund).

Health conscious members may choose to wake early and start with Aqua Fitness Fun at 6:45 AM in the H Hotel Pool! “Into No Man’s Land: Embracing Diversity In Our Schools” is the topic of our keynote speaker, Irene Miller, Holocaust survivor and author. We also welcome Bethany Platter, Lyon Consulting Group, Elizabeth Wise, Crim Fitness Foundation, Dr. Norm Lownds & Dr. Patricia Edwards from MSU, and Dr. Laura McLeman & Dr. Suzanne Knight from UM-Flint. They all have wonderful sessions for you to participate in collaborative learning and new ways to engage parents.

It is great to have you here to make the change by sharing, learning, and enjoy-ing the fellowship of sisters of all Generations and to participate in our planned activities to help challenge us all to make a greater difference in impacting education worldwide. Special appreciation is due to our registrar, Judi Fisher, and to our treasurer, Cindy Dietz, both of Gamma Alpha. Do YOUR part: Make the Change to Bridge Generations!

Rethinking Leadership 1 SCECH Debbie Newman, Beta Chi Join Debbie as she leads us through a paradigm shift in what leadership means in a classroom. Debbie has worked with Stephen Covey’s “Leader In Me,” a successful process that is being used in schools K-12, to develop leadership skills in students. Covey’s work in the “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” served as the springboard for empowering students and impacting school-wide culture. Debbie will share the history of the 7 Habits and their implementation with students. She will describe her experience with it, while giving a general overview of the process being used in many schools throughout the world.

Fall Gardening 1 SCECH Shaila Jehle, Master Gardener, Alpha Theta When we think of gardening, most of us think Spring! Our own Master Gardener, Shaila Jehle, will give you important things to do in the fall to wind down the summer season and prepare for the next growing season. What you do now will help things in the spring. Which plants should be pruned now and which should wait until after their blooming in the spring? Which plants need to be protected over the winter? As if that isn’t enough, Shaila, a former math teacher, will tell us what you can do now to help keep that garden splendor going through the fall.

Session Two 10:05 AM – 11:05 AM

E-Commerce Do’s and Don’ts 1 SCECH Bethany Platter, Business Analyst Manager, Lyons Consulting Group Whether you’re shopping at Amazon, Etsy, eBay, or still driving to your local

big box stores, Bethany invites you to learn more about different digital payment platforms like PayPal and Apple Pay, along with a few more. She will give you some tips to better navigate websites and advice about shopping and selling safely online. If you are still in the classroom, you

can take these online shopping tips to talk with your students about digital security.

Mindfulness 1 SCECH Elizabeth Wise, Crim Fitness Foundation What’s this new mindfulness all about, and how can we promote it in our students to impact better learning and self-awareness? How can we harness this idea to simplify and organize our personal lives? Elizabeth will describe her experiences with using this tool in schools with children and its application in adults seeking an inner calm awareness.

Scamming No More: Internet Safety for All Ages 1 SCECH Tamara Webster, Alpha Iota State Webmaster, Gamma Theta

Our own webmaster will guide you to safe browsing and corresponding on the internet. Join Tamara as she weaves a safety net for you and your students with the most current technology tidbits do’s and don’ts. Bring your devices or your pen and paper pads because this is a session that you won’t want to miss.

Lead with Your Heart Nancy Berkompas, Alpha Tau & Dr. Dorothy Sample, Mu How many times have we instinctively known the right thing to do? This is called leading with your heart. There have been many research-based studies on the topic and we will review some ideas that we know are the things that teachers, parents, and students need to hear from us.

Session Three 11:15 AM – 12:15 PM

Collaborative Classroom: School Gardens 1 SCECH Dr. Norm Lownds, Director of the 4-H Children’s Garden, Michigan State University Associate Professor

Dr. Norm Lownds can turn any plant into a science lesson. His current passion is Collaborative Classrooms, linking schools and school gardens across Michigan to each other and to scientists at MSU. Current educators can learn how to become part of this exciting movement. Those not currently in the classroom will enjoy Dr. Lownds’ presentation as he shares information about

the MSU Children’s Garden and the Cool Kids Plant Program highlighting plants children love.

Place-Based Teacher Education: Collaboration and Community Engagement 1 SCECH Professors Laura McLeman & Suzanne Knight, University of Michigan-Flint Faculty 2018 Provost Innovation in Teaching Prize Recipients

will describe their award-winning efforts to collaborate in organizing a course for secondary student teachers. They will share the results of their investigation which determined how the local community and larger society shape teachers’ work. They will also describe how teachers impact the local community and larger society. In their course, students form teams to pose and research their own questions, sharing with others their findings and possible implications.

Contemporary Alternative Medicine 1 SCECH Nancy Higgins, RN, Zeta You’ve heard of acupuncture, aroma therapy, healing touch, homeopathy, herbology, and other alternative forms of healing, but do they really work? Our own nurse educator and registered nurse, Nancy Higgins, will let us know what the research shows about these alternative forms of medicinal practice. Bring your questions, and she will have some answers and some discussion about what works. Be ready to take this back to the classroom to share with your students.

New Ways to Engage Parents 1 SCECH Dr. Patricia Edwards, recipient of DKG International Society’s 2017 Educator’s Book Award, Michigan State University Professor

Conference participants to this session will learn new strategies and creative tools for teachers and leaders to engage parents and increase learning by involving parents. Dr. Edwards will speak about the commitment required by educators, which frequently coincides with a particular kind of mindset. Educators acquire this mindset as they deepen their understanding of families, literacy/language, culture/race/class and themselves. Dr. Edwards pulls these understandings

together and presents them in a straightforward, concise and easy-to-use guide that is perfect for professional learning communities. Come join us to participate in this outstanding presentation that received high accolades at last summer’s DKG Northeast Regional Conference in Windsor, Ontario, CA.

General Membership Meeting Keynote Address 1:30 PM- 3:30 PM

Into No Man’s Land: Embracing Diversity in Schools 1 SCECH Irene Miller, Holocaust Survivor and Author Irene served as the curator of the Voice/Vision Holocaust Survivor Oral History Archive, but she wrote her book to document “a different type of survival … one of a world lost and a child forced to endure the pain of separation and the deaths of loved ones.” Surviving moved Irene to promote tolerance and acceptance of diversity. As a former public school teacher in Israel, Irene is a retired healthcare executive, who works with drug addicted and dual diagnosed women and their children. Her work will inspire educators to create an environment that encourages healthy interactions in a multi-cultural classroom setting.

Irene’s Objectives

Give a face to the dark chapter of human history,

Promote tolerance and acceptance of diversity,

Inspire positive action, including anti-bullying.

Empower people to overcome obstacles in life, by example.
