ALPHA GAMMA RHO FRATERNITY

Leadership has always been a big part of Alpha GammaRho’s Alpha Zeta Chapter. What other fraternity on campusboast that in five years they have had one student bodypresident, one Kansas 4-H Youth Council President, over tenstudent senators, one IFC president, over a dozen FFA StateOfficers and three National Scholarship winners? Alpha ZetaChapter has had this superior leadership. The AGR Fraternityhas continued this trend during the spring semester.

At the end of the fall semester, Brother Garrett Listerannounced his decision to run for Student Body President.

Lister has been a very involvedmember of the StudentGoverning Association for twoyears and he was ready toadvance to the next level. Garrettis from Marysville and hisrunning mate was Allison Pennerfrom Clay Center. Lister andPenner held campaign events atthe chapter house andmany AGRs showedsupport by wearingcampaign t-shirts orworking on thecampaign team.Although Garrettwas not successfulin his race, we are

proud of his leadership at Kansas StateUniversity and AGR.

Alpha Gamma Rho has had a stronghistory of representing the College ofAgriculture at the University level by serving asAg Student Senators in SGA. This spring we had fourbrothers elected out of six positions availble. New senatorsinclude: Kendal Clawson, Satanta, Reagan Kays, Weir, NathanLaudan, Paola and Kurt Lockwood, Caney. We are lookingforward to providing leadership for the college and KansasState University during the next school year.

FFA leaders have made a tradition of becoming AlphaGamma Rhos. This school year, all three of the elected malestate officers Nathan Laudan, Paola, Kurt Lockwood, Caneyand Cole Smith, Natoma lived in the AGR House. Includingpast state officers we had six state officers living in the houseduring the 2011-2012 school year.

Ag Ambassadors is an active club in the College ofAgriculture that is responsible for recruiting new studentsand representing the college. Nine AGRs were in theambassador program during the past year. Those including:Logan Britton, Bartlett; Jeff Cather, Anthony; Kurtis Clawson,Satanta; Nick Herrmann, Holcomb; Reagan Kays, Weir;Nathan Laudan, Paola; Garrett Lister, Marysville; KurtLockwood, Caney, and Andrew Strasburg, Fredonia.

AGRs are also involved in club level leadership. ColePearson from Scott City served as the president of the FoodScience Club. The Vice President of Block and Bridle this yearwas Nathan Smith, Macksville and Calvin Dix, Woodstonserved as treasurer. Other brothers also provided greatleadership for Block and Bridle’s Little American Royal Show.

Ben Tokach was the president of LAR andChase Minihan, Nathan Smithand Dustin Wooten wereinvolved in the planning andshow day activities.

Our fifth value at AlphaGamma Rho is to “Fosterlifelong personal developmentthrough innovative educational, leadership, and socialopportunities.” Here at AlphaZeta Chapter we value leadershipgreatly in all aspects of thecollege life. In the coming year,AGR will continue to lead the

College of Agriculture and Kansas State University to newheights.

ALPHA ZETA CHAPTER

3

When I talk to some of my friends at K-State that are inother Greek houses across campus, I am always humbled bythe support we have here at Alpha Gamma Rho. This wasreinforced this semester by having outstanding alumni comespeak to our chapter during formal dinner. The alumni thatcame and shared their knowledge included; Mike Smith#922, Hesston, Scott Bokelman #950, Washington and RickPerkins #1045, Wichita.

Our first presenter, Mike Smith, is the Managing Partnerand President of Ag 1 Source. Mike lives in Hesston and playsmany different roles in the success of the company he helpedstart, Ag 1 Source. Mike talked to us about being the bestcandidate possible to fill jobs in the agricultural industry.Smith also provided us with materials that he uses in hiseveryday business. The undergraduate chapter found Mike’spresentation very helpful in preparing for entering agbusinesses. Mike and Ag 1 Source have started a new five-yearscholarship opportunity. This award of $3,000 will go to theVNR of Recruitment for their integral role in filling our housewith good agricultural men. We really appreciate Mike’ssupport of this very important leadership role in the AlphaZeta Chapter.

In late March, Scott Bokelman, is a Financial ServicesOfficer with Commercial Finance Team of Frontier FarmCredit, spoke to us. He works out of the Marysville office and

has 25 years of experience with Farm Credit. As in the past, many of the undergraduate members will return home andcontinue the family operation after graduation. Therefore,Bokelman talked about how we can prepare to be goodcandidates for loans after we graduate from college. He alsofarms on the side, so he touched on how beneficial off thefarm income is to providing for his family. One of thehighlights of the night was listening to Scott’s stories whilehe was Noble Ruler. He had some pretty crazy stories and weremain uncertain if he was involved in any of these activitiesor was just an innocent bystander.

Our final alumnus speaker was Rick Perkins. Perkinsworks for Rabo AgriFinance as the Assistant VicePresident/Relationship Manager. He talked briefly about thebanking business and what Perkins does with RaboAgriFinance. He acts as the liaison between the under-graduatechapter and the alumni board. Therefore, we had a discussionabout issues facing the house and the alumni board. Rick alsoshared some stories about sneaks he had while anundergraduate, which brought laughs to the whole group.

Having alumni come to the chapter house and sharetheir knowledge and experiences with the undergraduates isa highlight of our semester. If you are interested in being aspeaker next fall or spring please contact Jason [email protected] or Reagan Kays [email protected].

Alumni Speaking to the Undergraduates of Alpha Zeta

From the Desk of the Noble RulerGreetings from Manhattan!

Summer break is upon us, and it isimportant to reflect on manyaccomplishments of Alpha Zeta thisSpring semester. The semester startedwith five new initiates bringing the pinnumber total to 1689. Otherhighlights to our semester includedour philanthropy, community service, and accomplishments on campus. Wehad our annual Sell-A-Fellaphilanthropy and raised over $4000 tohelp benefit Great Strides, a group

affiliated with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. It is always afun time for the undergrads, and we enjoy putting on theevent. We recently completed our Adopt-A-Highway clean upeffort on a section north of Manhattan. This is somethingthat we were excited about bringing back after a brief hiatus, and it provided a chance for us to give back to the

community. Some highlights across campus include GarrettLister running for Student Body President; Luke Knight andTanner Brunner representing K-State at NCBA; and NathanLaudan and Nick Herrmann being selected as College of AgAmbassadors.

We have had a solid start to 2012 and look to continue thesame direction when we all return in the fall. We expect aclass of 27 new members, so if there are any possible recruitsplease send us their contact information as soon as possible. The AGR house is an exciting place to be right now and itdoes not look like it will slow down anytime soon. Thepotential of the Alpha Zeta truly is high right now with thecapital campaign and the quality of members in the house. We welcome you by the house anytime. The weekend we haveplanned for the KU football game on October 6, 2012 will bea great one and we look forward to seeing as many of youthat can make it!

ALPHA GAMMA RHO FRATERNITY

Exciting things are happening at Alpha Zeta and withoutquestion our fraternity’s greatest resource is its members, both alumni and active. With that in mind, the Alpha ZetaAlumni Board has developed a program to utilize ourgreatest resource to everyone’s benefit. The AGR ProfessionalsProgram is designed with five major goals: 1) Increaseundergraduate investment and commitment to AGR, 2)Increase undergraduate access to career guidance andindustry opportunities, 3) Increase alumni employerawareness of available employee candidates, 4) Give alumniemployers the opportunity to evaluate upper echelonemployment candidates, and 5) Give AGR membersopportunities not available to nonmembers. The goal of theAlumni Board is to serve enough alumni involvement toprovide a mentor to each in-house active member. Activemembers will have the opportunity to participate in twofacets of the program, career mentoring andemployee/employer connections. The career mentoring willpair an alumnus with an active member who is pursuing asimilar career or desires to work in a similar industry. The

relationship would be loosely structured to providemaximum flexibility to the two individuals. The goals ofcareer mentoring are to provide hands-on career/industryexposure to the undergraduate, give the alumnus anopportunity to evaluate the undergraduate for potentialemployment recommendations, and provide career adviceand industry insight to the undergraduate. The employee/employer connections program would aim to connect upperechelon undergraduate members with potential alumniemployers, and provide alumni employers with first access tothese top tier candidates. Other program features may beadded as it becomes more established. Participation in theprogram is voluntary for both alumni and active members.Alumni members who are interested in the program orwould like to know more about it please email Jason Gradyat [email protected] or call him at 918-807-1976.Please consider being part of this program, its successdepends on alumni and active member involvement.

AGR Professionals Program

I have had the privilege of being on the board of severalorganizations during my “after college life” but representing mybrothers of AGR on the AZ Chapter Alumni Board has been themost rewarding. Right now, you have over 60 alumni brothersworking to culminate an effort that was started some 10 yearsago and to prepare plans for the future of AGR at K-State. I amextremely optimistic about the future of AGR at KSU. With yourhelp, we continue to develop the leaders of tomorrow, fromproduction ag to the large company boardroom to the politicalworld. We all need you to recommend names of young menthat have the qualifications to become new brothers.Recruitment is the heart and life blood of our existence.

During the last year, I have had the opportunity to visit inperson, on the telephone, via email and facebook many of ourbrothers from my time as a pledge and active. We continue tohave a kinship and care about each other and have an interest inwhat has happened to one another since graduation, despite notmaintaining contact for years. And I might add, tongue in cheek, despite whether we are Republican or Democrat. I happen tothink that our time at Alpha Zeta had a great deal to do with thatspecial life long bond of friendship.

A big thank you goes out to Sam Hands, Ty Brookover andDarrin Gigot and those who were responsible for a great eveningfor alumni in Garden City. A large thank you goes to DaveAnderson and Keith Westervelt for sponsoring a huge AGRgathering at Blueville Nursery. Another very much appreciatedthank you to Larry Geil for hosting an AGR gathering in Topeka.Watch for an AGR get together in your area. If you would like tohost an AGR social, please contact me and we will help.

July 20 and 21 is the date for the AGR Summer Fun Weekendto be in Hutchinson this year. Motel rooms have been reservedat Ramada Hotel and Conference Center under AGR or Alpha

Gamma Rho at a very good rate ($70). Courtesy of RandallGalle, on Friday afternoon we will be touring Kuhn Krause, formerly Krause Plow and visiting the John Evans Farm withdinner at Anchor Inn. Saturday morning is our summer boardmeeting, lunch and then we go 650’ below to tour theUnderground Salt Museum. See this Crescent for details. KuhnKrause just announced a large building expansion.

I have a request to ask you. Would you volunteer to come toManhattan to speak to the undergraduates about your time asan AGR, what it has meant to you in your life and about yourvocation? Just for one Wednesday evening for chapter dinnerand even stay for chapter meeting if you have the time. Thechapter members have been asking to have a chance to knowalumni. Contact Josh Roe, Jon Pretz, Peter Tomlinson, JasonGrady or Reagan Kays, VNR Alumni Relations.

We welcome Dr. Peter Tomlinson and John Pretz as chapteradvisors to assist Josh Roe. These men spend a lot of timeinteracting with the chapter. Jon is back on campus and is thedairy judging team coach among other duties. Jon has beenacting as an advisor for a year. Dr. Tomlinson is an AGR fromConnecticut and is an Agronomy Assistant Professor and StateWater Quality Specialist. We are very fortunate to have such animpressive group of advisors that bleed AGR.

Please update your email addresses to AGR National, or toReagan Kays or myself. For the latest news about alumni andAGR upcoming events sign in to K-State AGR Alumni onfacebook. Have a great summer and I will see you in Hutch.

This year, PinkRose was one to remember. Last year, being one of the newguys, I assumed it was just another date party or get-together.Now, I realize it’s an excellent way to recognize the brothersof Alpha GammaRho. Being an oldermember, it was goodseeing alumni I havealready connectedwith and meetingnew ones. I washonored to seebrothers in my classand the class belowme honored fortheir hard workand dedicationtoward their education. Also, getting to

meet my brothers’ dates reassure meI am around an outstanding group ofgentlemen, by the caliber of womenthey take to our functions. It wasalso great to show my date, one ofmy high school friends, K-State, mycollege life and how I havematured. I’m also eternally gratefulto our alumni. Without them, wewould not be as successful withouttheir influence on us. I cannot waitto come back to Pink Rose whenI’m an alumnus and share myinsight and experiences twenty-five to fifty years from now. I lovebeing an AGR and wouldn’t trade

Adopt-A-Highway ProjectCommunity service is a big part of the Alpha Zeta Chapter

of Alpha Gamma Rho. In the recent past, we have improvedour community service effort. We used the Adopt-A-Highwayprogram as a quick and easy way to help get our houseinvolved around the Manhattan Community. We hadapproximately 40 members who were able to help with theevent. It only took us approximately a hour to clean a two-mile stretch of highway. We were able to participate in thisevent one evening after house dinner when everyone was freeof class and other activities around campus. We look forwardto continuing this clean up in the future and to partaking ina new fall community service event.

Dave Sewell Memorial Sell-A-FellaWe raised a total of $4000 dollars this year, at our annual

Sell-A-Fella philanthropy in February. The event is put on tohelp the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, in which our donationgoes to help with research and treatments for Cystic Fibrosis

as well as families affected by the disease. The event is alwaysheld around Valentine’s Day with the motto of “Who saysmoney can’t buy love?” Our first and second year brothers areauctioned off to the highest bidder in return for a date. Wehad 33 brothers auctioned off this year with an average saleprice of $120 per brother.

The money was presented at the Great Strides CysticFibrosis walk here in Manhattan on April 28th. This year wewere the largest sponsors for the event being classified as sitesponsors. ALPHA GAMMA RHO FRATERNITY

House Mother LetterI was asked to write a small article

for the Crescent this year. What aprivilege to write about my young menand our house. Let me see if I can catcheveryone up. We have installed newcarpet, added new couches and a BIGflat screen TV in our informal livingroom. Also, new landscaping to thelawn and rock, so we have no morepulling weeds. It looks great.

We have had Sell-A-Fella and thisyear we raised 4,000 dollars to be givento the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in

honor of our lost brother David Sewell, whom we miss a lot.Pink Rose Formal was a great time with so many good-looking young men there with their dates and we had a greatturn out including our alumni. Attending were some thatwere celebrating 50 years since their initiation. Wow, that isamazing. The food and entertainment was wonderful. Iwould like to thank Roger Johnson, Reagan Kays and thecommittee for Pink Rose. I would also like to thank ToddJohnson for being there and being our guest speaker. I was

able to meet his lovely wife and lucky enough that they sit atmy table. If you missed it, we hope you can attend next year.Mark your calendar for right around Cattleman’s Day atKansas State next year and watch for more details in thefuture. We would love to see all of you.

I have been here now for five years and still feel the sameas I did the first day. I still cook Sunday dinner and wouldlove for anyone of you to stop by to visit and have dinnerwith us. Now I could talk about all the great AGR’s in thishouse and what they are doing and what they haveaccomplished, but I don’t have enough space to let you knowall that and how I feel about all of them. I still sew onbuttons, patch jeans and iron shirts. Not much has changedwith me. I still love what I do and this AGR house here atKansas State University and the young men in this house hasfilled such a big void in my heart. This is the best thing by farthat has happened to me since coming to Manhattan, KS. Ilove just being the AGR Mom.

I will be available anytime for questions. Call work #785-537-4226 or Cell# 785-410-6041 for questions or just to chat.

Sincerely, Carolyn Sadler
