On behalf of the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation Board of Directors, I would like to thank all of our donors, board members, community members, scholarship recipients, volunteers and the greater Duke Ohana for a memorable 2018. Duke once said, “Out of the water, I am nothing.” As we embarked on our journey as a board this year, we kept these words, and the inspiration of Duke close to our hearts. This year we celebrated our “past” through our Waterman Hall of Fame event held each summer at the Outrigger Canoe Club, honoring our legendary watermen and water women for their athletic achievements and leadership in our community. We celebrated our “present” through the week-long Duke’s Oceanfest, where athletes, spectators, malahini and kama’aina enjoyed a series of competitions in and out of the surf right on the shore of Waikiki. In addition to Duke’s Oceanfest, we supported 23 other ocean events through our athletic grant program, reaching hundreds of participants statewide. The Duke Kahanamoku Scholarship program is what we regard as our “future,” and is the top publicly-awarded scholarship for a high school senior in the state. Our scholarship committee worked tirelessly throughout the spring and the decision was difficult, as there were many deserving candidates. This year we awarded scholarships to 31 students from across the Hawaiian Islands.

Since ODKF began awarding scholarships and grants 32 years ago, 770 individuals, teams and organizations have received athletic grants, and 950 student athletes have been awarded scholarships towards their higher education. In total ODKF has awarded more than $2.9 million! Lastly, I would like to send a special mahalo on behalf of the board to the Growney family for their standout contribution this year and long-standing commitment to the organization. Their humble leadership in our community is a shining example of how a family can “live aloha” and serves as inspiration for us all. Thank you to our dedicated Board of Directors, our donors and all of our community volunteers. We are so grateful for everything you have given and your continued support! This past year has been truly remarkable, and we have much to look forward to in the year ahead.

AMBASSADOR OF ALOHARewarding College-Bound High School Students

The Duke Kahanamoku Ambassador of Aloha Scholarship was created to reward an exceptional college-bound Hawaii high school senior who embodies the Aloha Spirit and character that made “the Duke” such a beloved figure worldwide.

Naomi Ney, a Kohala High School senior on the Big Island, is the 2018 recipient of the $15,000 Ambassador of Aloha Scholarship, the largest single scholarship awarded by a Hawaii-based foundation or organization. She is projected to graduate first in her class, with a 4.0 GPA and will attend the University of San Francisco in the fall.

Naomi volunteers in at least nine different organizations, including Koahala Clean-up Crew, a student-led organization which formed as part of Kohala High School’s AP environmental science class. Led by Ney and several other students, the Kohala Clean-up Crew entered the prestigious Lexus Eco Challenge with the focus on reversing the flow of

small non-biodegradable plastics, known as micro-plastics, into the ocean. The Crew led beach cleanups at Pololu Valley and Kamilo Point, testified in front of the Hawaii County Council Committee, mentored students at several schools, installed recycling stations, and worked with UCSB to test the micro-plastics they collected. The group placed nationally at the 2017 Lexus Eco Challenge.

Ney is the captain of the Kohala High School Swim Team and has competed at the HHSAA Swimming Championships multiple times. She describes swimming as her "gateway to individual focus and balance" and credits it with helping her gain team leadership skills and personal progression. She offers free tutoring at the pool and, in return, asks only that the students participate in swim practice.

Naomi is a smart, engaging young woman who leads through action and is a selfless contributor to the community.

“In Hawaii, we greet friends, loved ones or strangers with

Aloha, which means with love. Aloha is the key word to

the universal spirit of real hospitality, which makes Hawaii

renowned as the world’s center of understanding and

fellowship. Try meeting or leaving people with Aloha. You’ll

be surprised by their reaction. I believe it, and it is my creed.”

In 2019, we are pleased to announce a new tradition for our organization: Duke’s Night to be held on February 23rd. This red carpet event at Diamond Head Theater will celebrate the top 4 candidates on the big screen, with a white envelope reveal of the $25,000 scholarship award recipient.

Duke’s Night will be a community event like none other. The focus will be 100% on the students, their achievements, and how they’ve inspired their community, with a crowd of peers, family, and friends to cheer on the candidates. All are welcome and we hope you will join in the fun.

PERPETUATING DUKE’S LEGACYOver $200,000 Awarded in Grants and Scholarships

As our scholars strive to meet the rising cost of higher education, the Foundation aims to provide the necessary support for our recipients to achieve all of their goals. At the conclusion of this application review, the Foundation awarded $160,000 in need-based scholarships to graduating high school seniors and current college students from across the state. Furthermore, the Foundation awarded $60,000 in grants to organizations and individuals that support our Hawaii watermen community, help develop Hawaii’s best ocean athletes, and connect our local keiki to the ocean and beach activities.

Board-Designated FundsSince its inception in 1986, ODKF has been providing support to teams and students who personify the spirit of Duke Kahanamoku. The active stewardship of our mission sprouts forth from all who continue to donate, growing through our watermen communities, and lifting our Duke scholar athletes toward their shared success.

In the face of rising costs of education and competition, we all share this opportunity and responsibility, acknowledging the Foundation’s need to sustain a deeper ability to transform the lives of our next ambassadors.

There are 15 Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation Board-Designated Legacy Funds for which scholarships and grants are awarded to sporting events and teams, as well as individual scholars and athletes. We offer our sincerest mahalo to the families and friends who continue to honor these tremendous individuals and make these funds possible each year.

WAIKIKI ’S PREMIER OCEAN SPORTS FESTIVALFounded by Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation 17 years ago, Duke's OceanFest has grown into one of Hawaii's premier ocean sports festivals. In honor of Duke Paoa Kahanamoku's legacy, the 17th Annual Duke's OceanFest was held August 18-26, 2018, on majestic Waikiki

Beach with nine days of events. With the threat posed by Hurricane Lane, this year proved to be one of the more challenging years for the event, however in the end, goals were met and everyone stayed safe and had fun.

The Hawaii Waterman Hall of Fame honors those who have contributed an enormous amount of energy and passion to the ocean. On September 24th, the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation inducted four Hawaii athletes into the Hawaii Waterman Hall of Fame who are pioneers and visionaries of our time. Nominated by their peers for their

contributions to ocean sports, their commitment to athletics through coaching and program development, in addition to tireless service to the community, the 2018 class of inductees truly epitomizes Duke’s spirit through their love of the water and through caring for our island community.

We truly are grateful for the support of our donors who are investing in the future of Hawaii, as seen in the young people who share our appreciation for athletics and academics.

The financial statements for the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation for the fiscal years ending 2017 and 2016 were audited by CW Associates. These financial statements are available to our members by request. A report has been developed for the Foundation’s unaudited financial results for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2018. These financial statements are now being audited. When that audit is completed, it will be available to members by request. Foundation contributions are generally unrestricted, and additional funds are raised through separate activities connected to the Duke’s OceanFest, the Hawaii Waterman Hall of Fame Awards, and royalty payments from TS Enterprises (Duke’s Restaurant) and Malama Pono.

Special thanks to all our volunteers, partners, and sponsors who make ODKF a continuing success: Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii, Duke’s Waikiki & TS Restaurants, Honolulu Star-Advertiser, McCabe Hamilton Renny & Co., Macfarlane Foundation, Na Kama Kai, and Youth Challenge Academy.
