While at a party organized by the lieutenant of his regiment, the shy and awkward Ryabovitch is suddenly kissed by an unknown woman in a dark room. This unexpected and electrifying encounter marks a turning point in his life and a shift in his personality, arousing his passions and setting him on a desperate quest to discover the identity of the mysterious lady.

One of Chekhov’s most admired stories, ‘The Kiss’ is joined in this volume by fi ve equally celebrated tales in a brand-new translation by Hugh Aplin: ‘The Lady with the Little Dog’, ‘Ward Number Six’, ‘The Black Monk’, ‘The House with the Mezzanine’ and ‘The Peasants’ – making this an indispensable collection for those wanting to discover Chekhov at his creative best.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Anton Chekhov (1860–1904) is one of the giants of modern literature, exerting a strong infl uence – both as a prose writer and as a playwright – on many present-day novelists and dramatists.

This early satirical story, reminiscent of Gogol and Dostoevsky, was fi rst published in 1924 and incurred the wrath of pro-Soviet critics. Along with the three other stories in this volume, which also explore the themes of the absurd and bizarre, it provides a fascinating glimpse into the artistic development of the author of The Master and Margarita.

The career of Mikhail Bulgakov was characterized by a constant and largely unsuccessful struggle against state censorship. This suppression did not only apply to his art: in 1926 his personal diary was seized by the authorities. This selection from the diaries and letters of the Bulgakovs provides an insightful glimpse into a fascinating period, telling the tragic tale of the fate of an artist under a totalitarian regime.

THE FLOWERS OF EVIL

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Charles Baudelaire (1821–67) is most famous for his groundbreaking collection of verse, The Flowers of Evil, but his essays, translations and prose poems have been equally infl uential.

Judicially condemned in 1857 as off ensive to public morality, The Flowers of Evil is now regarded as the most infl uential volume of poetry published in the nineteenth century. Torn between intense sensuality and profound spiritual yearning, racked by debt and disease, Baudelaire transformed his own experience of Parisian life into a work of universal signifi cance. With his unfl inching examination of the dark aspects and unconventional manifestations of sexuality, his pioneering portrayal of life in a great metropolis and his daring combination of the lyrical and the prosaic, Baudelaire inaugurated a new epoch in poetry and created a founding text of Modernism.

Anthony Mortimer, already praised for his virtuoso translations of Petrarch, Dante and Villon, has produced a new version that not only respects the sense and the form of the original French, but also makes powerful English poetry in its own right.

WINTER NOTES ONSUMMER IMPRESSIONSFyodor DostoevskyTRANSLATED BY KYRIL FITZLYON

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Fyodor Dostoevsky (1821–1881) is considered one of the greatest writers of all time. His works include such seminal novels as Crime and Punishment, The Idiot and The Karamazov Brothers.

In June 1862, Dostoevsky left Petersburg on his fi rst excursion to Western Europe.

Ostensibly making the trip to consult Western specialists about his epilepsy, he also wished to see fi rsthand the source of the Western ideas he believed were corrupting Russia. Over the course of his journey he visited a number of major cities, including Berlin, Paris, London, Florence, Milan and Vienna.

His impressions on what he saw, Winter Notes on Summer Impressions, were fi rst published in the February 1863 issue of Vremya (Time), the periodical he edited.

Among Dostoevsky’s later novels, The Adolescent occupies a very special place: published three years after The Devils and fi ve years before his fi nal masterpiece, The Karamazov Brothers, the novel charts the story of nineteen-year-old Arkady – the illigitimate son of the landowner Versilov and the maid Sofi a Andreyevna – as he struggles to fi nd his place in society and “become a Rothschild” against the background of 1870s Russia – a nation still tethered to its old systems and values but shaken up by the new ideological currents of socialism and nihilism.

Both a Bildungsroman and a novel of ideas, dealing with themes such as the relationship between fathers and sons and the role of money in modern society, The Adolescent – here presented in a brand-new translation by Dora O’Brien – shows Dostoevsky at his fi nest as a social commentator and observer of the workings of a young man’s mind.

Coming back to the “nest” of his family home in Russia after years of fruitless endeavours away from his roots, Lavretsky decides to turn his back on the vacuous salons of Paris and his frivolous and unfaithful wife Varvara Pavlovna. On his return he meets Liza, the daughter of one of his cousins, whom he had known when they were children and who rekindles in him long-smothered feelings of love. News of Varvara’s death arrive from France, off ering Lavretsky the prospect of a new life, but a cruel twist threatens to shatter his dreams and forces him to re-evaluate his plans.

Hailed as a masterpiece of Russian literature, A Nest of the Gentry – Turgenev’s most successful and widely read novel, here presented in a new translation by Michael Pursglove – deals with the personal struggles of the individual in a period of turbulent social change.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Ivan Turgenev (1818–83) was a novelist, poet and dramatist, and now ranks as one of the towering fi gures of Russian literature. His masterpiece, Fathers and Children, is considered one of the greatest novels of the nineteenth century.

Now bankrupt after some failed gambles, Aristide Saccard, the former kingpin of the Paris Stock Exchange, desperately wants to get back to the top of the fi nancial pile. When his powerful brother, the government minister Eugène Rougon, refuses to help him, he forms a partnership with the engineer Hamelin and founds the Banque Universelle, which speculates on public works in the Middle East. But as his greed and desire to outplay his rivals gets the better of him, the dashing and ruthless Saccard perilously begins to infl ate the value of his enterprise using rumour, intrigue, fi nancial manipulation and all the other tricks in the book.

Inspired by real events and meticulously researched by Zola, Money is, in the wake of recent fi nancial scandals, an all-too-topical exploration of the dynamics of greed, the excesses of capitalism and its dangerous relationship with politics and the press.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Émile Zola (1840–1902) is the foremost representative of the Naturalist school, and is best remembered for Thérèse Raquin and his twenty-novel cycle The Rougon-Macquarts.

As they relax after dinner on Christmas Eve, the members of a family and their guests turn to telling ghost stories. These ghoulish accounts range from the melancholy to the macabre, and get increasingly bizarre as the ghosts leap out of the tales and make an appearance in the family’s home. Fact and fi ction, the real and unreal collide, until the reader is not sure who is haunting whom.

A masterful work of comic horror, Jerome K. Jerome’s After-Supper Ghost Stories is a witty look at why Christmas Eve is so perfect for ghost stories and why ghosts love the Yuletide season. ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

A English writer and humourist, Jerome K. Jerome (1859–1927) wrote a range of plays, essays and novels during his lifetime and is best known for the classic comic work Three Men in a Boat.

Tolstoy’s fi rst published work, completed in 1856, Childhood, Boyhood, Youth recounts his early life up to his university days.

These are not memoirs in the strict sense of the word, as the author’s Stendhalian take on the autobiographical genre confronts and blurs the notions of reality and imagination, combining nostalgic anecdote with frank personal assessment and philosophical extrapolation.

An early display of Tolstoy’s storytelling genius, written in his classically simple yet colourful language, these chronicles provide the reader with invaluable insight into the personal and literary development of one of the greatest writers of all time.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Leo Tolstoy (1828–1910) is regarded by some as the greatest novelist of all time. With such masterpieces as Anna Karenina and War and Peace, he infl uenced generations of writers and changed the course of world literature.

NIGHT FLIGHT

Antoine de Saint-ExupéryTRANSLATED BY DAVID CARTER

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (1900–44) was a French writer and aviator, who disappeared on a reconnaissance mission during the Second World War. The author of several novels about fl ying, he is best remembered today for the children’s book The Little Prince.

Under the pressure of his boss, the intransigent Rivière, the airmail pilot Fabien attempts a perilous fl ight during a heavy night-time thunderstorm in Argentina. As conditions get worse and the radio communication with Fabien becomes increasingly di cult, Rivière begins to question his uncompromising methods, and his distress turns to guilt when the pilot’s wife comes to fi nd him in search of answers.

Based on Saint-Exupéry’s own experiences as a commercial pilot, Night Flight is a haunting and lyrical examination of duty, destiny and the individual, as well as an authentic and tragic portrayal of the intrepid early days of human air travel.

Shakespeare’s Sonnets are among the most lyrical and moving pieces of poetry in any language, abounding with examples of his genius for wordplay, rhythm and metaphor and dealing with the eternal themes of love, memory, beauty and the ravishes of time. First published in 1609, the Sonnets have been the subject of literary curiosity ever since, mainly concerning the identity of the two addressees, ‘Mr W.H.’ and the ‘Dark Lady’, and the light they could shine on Shakespeare’s life.

An exponent of the theory that Shakespeare, the modestly educated provincial man from Stratford-upon-Avon, could not have written the works which are attributed to him, Mark Twain off ers an eloquent and entertaining analysis of this issue of authorship.

Balancing humour, insight and vitriol, Is Shakespeare Dead? is a provocative contribution to the tradition of Shakespeare-doubting, as well as a fi ne example of the great American novelist’s critical writing.

Dante AligheriTRANSLATED BY J.G. NICHOLS

Describing Dante’s second stage in his arduous journey to redemption, Purgatory features a host of unforgettable scenes and characters, and arguably some of the best poetry to be found in the Divine Comedy. The gloom, torments and evils of Hell have been left behind, but Dante’s ascent of Mount Purgatory towards Paradise remains fraught with obstacles, not least the burden of his own mortality and his human passions.

Purgatory is presented here in a new verse translation by acclaimed poet and prize-winning translator J.G. Nichols. Also included are the original Italian text, extensive notes and a critical apparatus focusing on Dante’s life and works.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Dante Aligheri (1265–1321) is consid-ered to be the father of Italian poetry and a great infl uence in world literature. His masterpiece, The Divine Comedy, is the zenith of medieval knowledge and a paragon of poetic imagination.

The son of a Gypsy woman, Sébastien is found as a newborn baby in the Alps. Born on the same day, Belle is a beautiful white Pyrenean Mountain Dog who has been neglected and passed on from owner to owner, until one day she escapes from a kennel. When Sébastien rescues the runaway Belle from the wrath of the villagers, the boy and the dog form a lifelong friendship and embark on exciting adventures in the mountains.

Cécile Aubry (1928–2010) was a French actress who gave up her career to devote herself to writing children’s novels and screenplays.

Roberta, Phyllis and Peter have their comfortable lives in London thrown into disarray by the disappearance of their father. They are forced to move to a small cottage in the countryside with their mother, who struggles to make ends meet. The children fi nd solace in the railway nearby, and befriend the railway porter and an old gentleman. Through this love of the trains they are led on many exciting adventures, including a quest to discover the secret of their father’s disappearance.

English author and poet E. Nesbit (1858–1924) is best known for Five Children and It and The Railway Children, which has become one of the most cherished classics of English literature.

Katy, a twelve-year-old gangly tomboy, dreams of blossoming into a sophisticated young woman. She is, however, prone to mischief, and leads her six siblings into various scrapes. Her life is turned upside down by a terrible accident, which leaves her bedridden. Now she is forced to learn the virtues of patience, sacrifi ce and hopefulness, as she comes to terms with her disability. A heart-warming tale that has become a children’s classic since its publication in 1872, Susan Coolidge’s What Katy Did is here beautifully illustrated by Susan Hellard.

Susan Coolidge was the pen name of Sarah Chauncey Woolsey (1835–1905), an American children’s author who lived most of her life in New England. She is best known for What Katy Did, in which the Carr family was modelled after her own.

Illustrated by David Mackintosh

THE CANTERVILLE GHOSTAND OTHER STORIES

OSCAR WILDE

From his Baker Street apartment, Sherlock Holmes wields his powers of deduction in pursuit of justice and truth, venturing out into foggy Victorian London, accompanied by his faithful sidekick Dr Watson. This classic collection of Sherlock Holmes tales includes many of the detective’s most-loved exploits.

Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930) is the celebrated author of many adventure novels, including The Lost World and The Poison Belt, and the creator of the hugely popular detective Sherlock Holmes.

When the Americans Mr and Mrs Otis and their four children move into Canterville Chase, its previous occupant Lord Canterville warns them that the ghost of his ancestor still haunts the house. Sparkling with his trademark wit, this classic tale is one of Oscar Wilde’s fi nest stories and is presented here with three other comic mystery stories.

Oscar Wilde (1854–1900) was a prolifi c writer and one of the most successful playwrights of Victorian Britain, as well as a champion for the values of Aestheticism.
