CELEBRATING THEVANGUARD PERSONALITYOF THE YEAR

SPECIALEDITION

2012

Page 2: ALLURE SPECIAL EDITION

Last week, Eko Hotel & Suites was aglow as political stars

converged for the Vanguard Personality of the Year.Governor Rotimi Amaechi

was being honoured, followed by the very young Aigboje Aig Imoukhuede, who came runner up. I was tickled when Gov Amaechi paid tribute to the Vanguard. Awards. Awards come tumbling in by the droves. He waives them all off, but accepted the Vanguards, because of vanguards intergrity and genuineness.

Indeed, in its 29 years existence, the paper has maintained the narrow path of truth and honesty. The gorilla path which was popular a while back has now become, so so old fashion. Old is Old, and

like Siberia, nobody wants to go there. The publisher’ s insistence on all things whole has paid off and like the lovely bride, we are a shininhg example of all things beautiful.

Vanguard‘s Personality of the Year is serious business and recipients have truly earned the honour. Chairman of the occassion, Gen . Babangida, who came on his own ticket, paid tributes to the leadership qualities of these two and even managed to throw in a salvo. True to type, we are all left guessing. Did he suggest that Hon. Tambuwal go for president or just any’ higher office’.? keep guessing.

In this special award edition, we feature some of the personalities and highlights from the Night of Honour.

Our regular pages will return next week.Enjoy!

In choosing Governor Amaechi, consideration was taken of the numerous infrastructural projects initiated by the governor which helped to address long standing complaints about life in one of the oldest

capital cities in the country, Port-Harcourt. But even beyond that, editors were moved by the passion and drive of the Amaechi administration to touch the citizenry with human capacity building projects, notably in the areas of education and agriculture.Despite his sometimes blunt political visage, Governor Amaechi has won the admiration of friends and foes for his administration’s projects many of which, have become benchmark for many other governors in the country.

The 500 model primary schools built in the first term of the governor, of which 250 have been fully equipped and commissioned, have altered the negative drift from public schooling in the state with many private schools losing pupils to the government funded model primary schools. The schools equipped with state of the art libraries, teaching facilities, playrooms, auditoria, and dispensaries are easily comparable to the best in many parts of the world. Each primary school is also equipped with ICT facility, basketball pitch, volleyball pitch, a sick bay and nursery playgroup.According to the governor all a student needs to come with after admission is the clothing he or she is putting on at the beginning of the school year.As a way of ensuring sustenance in standards, the state administration has opened the secondary schools to the management of a foreign education consultancy, Educomp Solution. In the area of healthcare, the Amaechi administration in its first four years, fully built and equipped 160 primary health care centres in all 23 local government areas. The government has also opened a state of the art hospital in Port-Harcourt, named after one of the state’s leading lights in the area of medicine, Prof. Kelsey Harrison.

The administration’s achievements in the area of agriculture have also been revolutionary even though, hidden from the eyes of the urban dwellers.

Besides four fish farms in Buguma, Andoni, Opobo and Ubima and a 100 hectare banana farm in Ogoni which is projected to be expanded to 250 hectares, the government has also established an integrated farm modeled after the Songhai farm in Porto Novo.

The Rivers model of Songhai is about 20 times the size of that in Porto Novo and integrates livestock, arable farming, fishery, snail farming and poultry. The administration has also established a 2,000-hectare farm in Etche with a total available land space of 3,000 hectares. The farm is projected to cost $140 million and is being established in conjunction with a foreign technical partner and it is expected to have 300 farming houses which would accommodate 300 farming families living and working in the farm.Remarkably, the farm projects some of which were established with foreign technical partners contributed significantly to the reduction of criminality given the high emoluments offered to farm hands some who go home with six figure salaries monthly.

AIG-IMOUKHUEDE’S DAY OF HONOUR TOO...

Mr. Aig-Imoukhuede is a man of far reaching vision whose steps have set standards for others in his chosen profession. His efforts did not come without challenge, but in all, Mr. Aig-

Imoukhuede successfully navigated the several obstacles that consumed many of his contemporaries. Besides laurels in his core competence in banking, Aig-Imoukhuede is also a member of the Federal Government’s Economic Management Team.

Given his sterling efforts it is not surprising that Aig-Imoukuede was picked by the administration to do the job where many angels supposedly would have dared. As chairman of the Presidential Task Force on the Verification, Mr. Aig-Imoukhuede brought an unusual commitment to his job where neither friend nor foe was spared in the audit of the public purse.

TITS AND BITS!sHow Me a HappY Marriage and….

You’ll be happy if you’ll remember that men don’t change much. Women do. Women adapt. But if you think that means they lose their individuality, you’re wrong. Show me a happy marriage and I’ll show you a clever woman.

reaL secUriTYMany of us make the mistake of believing that

security comes from money in the bank. Well, that’s wrong. Plenty of people have money and an ex-spouse who hates them and children who only call them for money. Real security in life comes from having a joyous marriage and children who are well adjusted and actually enjoy spending time with you. That’s about as wealthy as a person can be.

JesUs is coMing, JesUs is coMing! What’s this brouhaha about ‘Jesus is coming’,

‘Jesus is coming’ messages going all over Blackberry? If He is coming, let Him come. The

world is ruined enough and needs Him desperately.Meanwhile, most people sending these

messages seem to be doing so like they are saying Rick Ross or one masquerade is coming to town. They say: ‘Jesus is coming’ and yet if you check their DP, you can’t really see their faces because what they show more are their breasts; ugly looking things for that matter! They say Jesus is coming, yet they will not leave another woman’s husband alone. They say Jesus is coming, yet they keep jumping from bed to bed, sleeping around and spreading STDs. They say Jesus is coming, yet our men keep going after women for their money and not for true friendship. They say Jesus is coming, yet our men don’t want to work anymore and some of them are now being exported to Asia as sex slaves. They say Jesus is coming, yet our business ethics are getting worse than ever, because people want to be served these days instead of serving. They say Jesus is coming, yet they sing in the choir and live with our girlfriends that we are not married to!

I know Jesus is going to come and when He comes, He will not come down here. Those who

get Captivatedare truly His will be caught up in the sky with Him and taken away. Then, He will come back here as judge and not as Saviour, after those left behind have gone through torture like they have never known or expected.

I know Jesus is coming and there will be “two” somewhere, one will be taken and the other will be left behind. Will you be the one taken? Before you save the ‘unbeliever’, look in the mirror and save yourself the “so-called believer “first and others will believe because of your lifestyle

JeroMe, can i MarrY THe Man i JUsT MeT?I can’t say ma’am because I don’t know this

man, neither can I vouch for him. I suggest you take one day at a time and ask a lot of questions that will make you know the kind of man you are hanging out with. Men have ways of asking women so many questions, get to know them and tailor themselves to fit into who they think the woman may want. Then, after marriage, they go back to who they conveniently are.

I advise at no time should you talk too much about yourself even if you are an extrovert, instead, listen and observe if what he says and what he does are in sync. At no time should you jump into seeing yourself as his wife because you are not in the true sense friends yet, just acquaintances.

One step at a time my, dear. This is about your life. The decision you make today will have great impact on your life tomorrow.

I WISH YOU ALL THE BEST!

Everyone who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a sensible man who built his house on the rock. The rain fell, the rivers rose, and the winds blew and pounded the house, yet it didn’t collapse, because its foundation was on the rock – Matt. 7:24.

GROUP B:Vegetables

Carotenes, calcium and iron are just a few of the essential health-giving properties found in vegetables.

HEALTH101News

When you eat in balance with your individual physical needs, you may be surprised how small annoyances begin to clear up: skin problems, allergies or that irksome tendency to get cranky by mid-afternoon. When the balance is wrong, you may be off in all sorts of ways; tired and droopy even after you eat; irritable and bloated, or stricken with headaches or constipation which can affect your whole outlook on life. Bad food can also pull you into a cycle of negative thoughts about yourself.

THE FOOD YOU NEED

Carrots:The richest in carotenes

of all plant foods, carrots offer protection from cancers and cardio-vascular diseases and help keep eyes and lungs healthy. They are one of the most nutritious root vegetables. They are

an excellent source of anti-oxidant compounds, and the richest vegetable source of carotenes, which give them their bright, orange colour. These compounds help protect against cardio-vascular diseases and cancer. Carotenes may reduce the incidence of heart disease by about 45 percent (45%), promote good vision and help maintain healthy lungs. They are also rich in fibre, anti-oxidant vitamins C and E, calcium, and potassium.

A chemical in carrots, falcarinol, has been shown to suppress tumours in animals by a third.

Bell Peppers:The bright colours of bell

peppers contain high levels of carotene for heart and cancer protection, and are also a rich source of vitamin C. Bell peppers come in a variety of colours, but red and orange bell peppers contain the highest level of vitamin B6

and carotenes. However, all of them are extremely rich in vitamin C, with an average serving providing more than a day’s recommended intake. Generally, the deeper the colour of the bell pepper, the more beneficial plant compounds it contains. These include bioflavonoid to protect against cancer and phenols, which help block the creation of cancer-causing chemicals in the body. Peppers also contain plant sterols, which may have an anti-cancer effect.
