When Kurt Rotzler’s fiancée Georgiana McKay told him to take care of the wedding arrangements, he looked no further than a doorstep he visits every day.

Rotzler, who has delivered mail to the Plains at Parish Homestead since it opened in 2009, had the first-ever wedding at the retirement community on Friday, Jan. 6. “Everyone here is friendly,” Rotzler. “It’s a lovely area.”

The two met through the dating website eharmony.com in October 2010, when McKay was at nursing school in Ticonderoga. “When he first emailed me, he said he was on his way to his daughter’s wedding,” she said. “I thought it was sweet that he took time out to email me.”

With the 2012 Bridal Expo at Foothills on Sunday, Jan. 15 – always the first

of the year around here – a girl might get overwhelmed with all the choice. But local vendors have offered up a “cheat sheet” of trends to set the bride on the path to her perfect wedding.

12 “Halo” Engagement Rings With a center stone surrounded by smaller stones, the halo-style

engagement ring is a popular choice. “It gives off the same overall effect of bril-liance that a big solitaire stone has,” says Reuben Wilde of Wolf Wilde Goldsmiths. “And it’s vintage-looking, which is back in fashion.”

11 Ball GownsThe big, poofy wedding dress might be making a comeback. “It’s a little early

to tell, but the experts predict the ballgown will be big this year,” says Norah Doyle at Rainbow’s End Weddings and More. And for the gossip-magazine readers, yes, Rainbow’s End carries gowns inspired by the two biggest weddings of the year—Bella Swann’s Breaking Dawn dress and Kate Middleton’s royal gown.

10 Modest Looks Also on the designer’s docket is the modest look. “We’re seeing lots of

sleeves, cover-ups and jackets,” Doyle reported. “Brides are thinking beyond the strapless, both for themselves and for their bridesmaids.”

9 “Natural Look” BouquetsUsing daisies, roses and other readily avail-able flowers, Gary Buman of Gary’s Flowers

specializes in bouquets that have an “unarranged, arranged” look to them. “Lots of color is also very popular,” he says. “We’re seeing lots of requests

Georgiana McKay seals the deal in a traditional way, serv-ing wedding cake to new husband Kurt Rotzler.

8 “Alternative Metal” Wedding Bands “Matching wedding

bands are becoming less common,” says Liz Pereira, also of Wolf Wilde Goldsmiths and Reuben’s sister. “There’s some-thing very manly about titanium, cobalt chrome and tungsten, metals that are indestruc-tible. And they’re less expensive, which guys like – they’ll spend a lot of money on the bride, but they don’t want to spend a lot on themselves.”

7 Groom’s Party ShavesRandy Miritello of the Crystal Palace will

lock his door for a groom’s party and give the whole group a shave and a haircut. “We stock up on beer and give the each a hot towel, hot lather and essential oil shave, trim off any loose hairs and shine up their shoes,” Miritello says. “It’s a fun gathering for the guys and helps them relax before the big day.”

6 Museum Weddings Hosting your wedding ceremony or reception

a museum, art gallery or civic organization instead of a restaurant or banquet hall is “the new philanthropic way to support arts and cul-ture,” says Huemac Garcia, the executive director of the

Foothills Performing Arts Center. “It’s a way of giving back to the community.”

5 Antique Linens“Vintage” weddings are making a mod-

ern comeback. “Our gold and mahogany Chavari chairs are very popular,” reports Lydia Palmer of Mor-ris Tent Rentals. “Romantic, an-tique tones are in for linens – roses, soft pinks, sil-vers.” And for those who want to take advantage of

the beautiful Otsego County landscape, “Country-Chic,” as Palmer calls it, is also a rising trend. “We’re notic-ing a lot of weddings with an outdoor, natural feel.”

4 “Small Plate” AffairsA wedding without a meal is no fun for a

hungry guest, but more and more couples are opting for “mingle and eat” din-ners, which invite guests to wander around the recep-tion, chat and eat over the course of the reception, rather than sit down for an hour-long meal. No long buffet lines, no competing to see who can fulfill the wacky DJ’s dance challenge and get in line first. “It’s all the formality of a tradi-tional wedding, but it’s more relaxed,” says Brittany Lobb of Sunrise Specialty Cater-ing. “It’s the best of both worlds.” Also popular with

3 Custom Cocktails “We had one couple with a “Shrek”-themed

wedding,” says Janet Hur-ley-Quakenbush, also of Foothills. “Their signature drinks were a ‘Fiona-tini’ and a ‘Shrek-bomb.’” Also popular with the less-cine-

matic crowd, sugar-rimmed, fruit champagnes or wines with a name matching the theme of their wedding.

2 Live Music John Zoe has been playing weddings since

he was 11 knows the secret to great live wedding music. “The most important part is

pleasing the bride,” he says. “If she asks me for specific songs, I will go home and learn them.” And the trend is swooping back around to incorporate live musicians

instead of iTunes for the cocktail hour and dinner. “When people arrive, they like seeing someone play-ing.”

1 Dance Music The B52’s “Love Shack” is on every

wedding playlist Life of the Party DJ service has ever serviced. “It’s not a wed-ding unless that’s played,” Todd Loucks says. “But you can get some very strong divides on ‘The Ma-carena’ and ‘The Chicken Dance’.”

POSTMAN/From B1meet, and he drove three hours to see her. “We got along great,” McKay said. “After that, we started visit-ing each other every week-end, and when I graduated in May 2011, I moved here to be with him.”

The ceremony was held outside in the Memory Garden. “I was busy with school, so I told him, ‘You arrange everything, I’ll show up’,” she said, laughing. “But I did ask that it was in a gazebo.”

The couple was fortunate that a non-traditional Janu-ary warm snap fell in line with their non-traditional choice of season. “Every-one has their wedding in the summer,” McKay said. “I wanted to do something dif-ferent.”

After the ceremony, a small group of friends and family blew celebratory bubbles at the happy couple and moved inside to in the Parish’s banquet room, where they enjoyed a dinner of chicken broccoli alfredo and baked shrimp scampi

in lemon butter, garlic and white wine, prepared by head chef Amanda Gargano. “It was a great experience,” McKay said. “The food was phenomenal!”

“We are open to anyone who wants to have their wedding held here,” said Barbara Ann Heegan, Plains marketing director. “We can hold many people and will cater the event with our own staff.”

The ceremony may have been in cool weather, but the honeymoon cruise is planned for warmer climates in May. “I’m still in school at Upstate Medical in Syra-cuse, so we didn’t want to rush the honeymoon,” McK-ay said. “But we wanted to get the wedding done.”

Editor’s Note: Dr. Mo Micek, a former pediatri-cian with Bassett Healthcare Network, Oneonta, passed away Dec. 18.

To the Editor:It is extremely difficult

to write about the person of Dr. Maureen Micek Siegel. Indeed, it’s impossible to adequately express what a loss her death projects.

Mo, as she was affection-ately known to her friends, was one of the most gener-ous, caring and considerate human beings I have ever known. Her sense of humor, self-effacing, humble de-meanor and uncompromised concern for others framed her persona every day of her

life.As a

pediatri-cian her patients occupied a prime focus in her life. But it was her fam-ily, her

husband Tim, her son Jack, her daughter Sarah and her mother Maureen that were first and foremost. She could never do enough for each.

If she wasn’t attending one of Jack’s track meets, she was there at Sarah’s game. If she wasn’t picking up her Mom at the Thanks-giving Home, she was

witnessing another orches-tral performance of her kids. Her life was non-stop from pillar to post, if you will, and never for herself.

Her community involve-ment from the Grange to Bassett to oh so many other things she deemed worthy of her time and efforts was a thing to behold and admire. Often I could not believe her stamina. Be it a family trip to Maine or back again to Ireland, she would always return with the same verve with which she left, always hitting the ground running and never looking back.

I will never forget Mo

and all that she personified: character, honesty, sincer-ity and most of all love. If one was blessed with the good fortune to have known her, one was blessed. You always felt that you knew Mo all your life.

A famous writer once said that only in winter can one tell the real evergreens. Suf-fice to say Mo Siegel was a true evergreen. To say she will be missed is an un-derstatement. Life is never easy, but Mo’s loss makes it so much tougher. But as Mo would always say, “At least we have each other.”

‘Bud’ Tanner

COOPERSTOWN – Life-long Cooperstown vaca-tioner and resident Duncan Campbell “Bud” Tanner passed away Christmas Day in Akron, Ohio. He was 81.

Bud Tanner was born June 11, 1930, to Edith Campbell and Moir Perry Tanner, a pharmacist at Cooperstown’s Church & Scott Pharmacy who rose to head the Buffalo Children’s Hospital.

Bud was educated at the Park School in Buffalo, Amherst College and the University of Buffalo.

For 50 years, Mr. Tan-ner was an accomplished

fundraising consultant, organiz-ing major capital campaigns that raised tens of millions of dollars for hospitals,

universities, nursing homes and other social service institutions throughout Up-state New York and Ohio.

Among his major accom-plishments was organizing the 1969-70 “SHARE” cam-paign that raised the then-exceptional sum of $12 mil-

lion to expand Syracuse’s Crouse Hospital. His posts included vice president of Tamblyn & Brown, Inc. of New York City, develop-ment director of the Akron City Hospital, and founder and chairman of James/Duncan Associates.

His great-grandfather, Perry G. Tanner, moved to Cooperstown in 1843, and Bud was never more at home than gardening at his former home on Susque-hanna Avenue, golfing at the Leatherstocking Country Club, or enjoying dinner and lively conversation with friends and family at The

Otesaga.Survivors include three

children by his first mar-riage, to Jean Lund Tanner: sons Duncan Campbell Tan-ner, Jr., Murray Scot Tanner, and daughter Ellen Tanner Wise. Also, by four grand-children, Duncan Campbell Tanner III, Ian Robert Tan-ner, Sarah Perry Wise, and William Dennison Drew Wise.

In 2008, Mr. Tanner was preceded in death by his wife Lucille Pearsall Tanner.

A public memorial ser-vice in Akron is planned for January with final inter-ment to take place later at a

private family ceremony in Cooperstown.

Memorial contributions may be made to Bassett Hospital or the Salvation

Army.A guestbook is available

at www.legacy.com/obituar-ies/ohio.

CONNELL, DOW & DEYSENROTH, INC.FUNERAL HOME

NAPLES/From A1Naples, as he and his family always seemed to be in the middle of exceptional hap-penings.

There he was in Wells Bridge, a few days before Thanksgiving 2008, cele-brating his grandson Isaac’s first birthday with love and good cheer. Mike and Jean were there to support their oldest son, Dale, who was raising his three young children without his wife, Tanya, 32, who had died of cancer a few months before.

There he was in St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church on June 14, 2009, when son Tim came home for a celebratory mass after being ordained the week be-fore in Burlington, Vt., the first Oneontan in 25 years to enter the priesthood.

There he was last spring at meetings of parents and supporters of St. Mary’s School, in deep thought, re-flecting on whether and how the only parochial school between Albany and Bing-hamton could be saved. He and Jean wondered whether the 50-some family Oneonta Home School Association they were involved in could play a role.

There he was in Septem-ber, on his front lawn at Gilbert and West Broadway, gleeful that, two months before election day, he had already knocked on all 801 doors in the Sixth Ward in his quest for an aldermanic seat. He rewarded himself

a few minutes later at the Sixth Ward Athletic Club’s first spaghetti lunch of the season.

He knew what he thought: for instance, that hiring a city manager was a bad idea. And yet, by the end of the campaign – he was elected Nov. 7 by a wide margin – he acknowl-edged that, whatever his personal feelings, if a new city charter creating a city manager passed, he would do his best to make it work.

There he was New Year’s Day in the Foothills’ Atri-um, with smiling wife Jean, joshing son Brian, a govern-ment professor at Panola College in Carthage, Texas. You should come back in a few years and be Oneonta mayor, dad was telling the young professor; his son was having none of it.

“They were reconstruct-ing Parish Street when Irene hit and it dumped a pile of

water on the road, plugging the drains and flooding the street,” Bill Shue remem-bered, “And here comes Mike in his white car, like a tank, driving down the street. He saw the drains were clogged, but he said, ‘We can’t ask the construc-tion company to risk their lives to come out here – it can wait until the morning’ And he was right. I can’t

help but think he had a di-rect line to someone higher up. Mike believed someone was watching over us.”

Born here, working in the city’s Public Works Depart-ment for three decades, with a cheerful wife and five tall, handsome, home-schooled sons, Mike Naples was hard to miss.

For years, he volunteered at the Oneonta Boys & Girls

Club and the Boy Scouts of America. And he was is re-membered as an avid hunter and best walleye fisherman around.

Mike is survived by his mother, Philomena (Co-lone) Naples; Jean, his wife of 35 years; sons Dale, Brian, Timothy, David (and wife Bailey) and Anthony; four grandchildren, Owen, Gianna, Isaac and Colburn; father-in-law Edwin Van-Hensbergen; siblings Mary-ann Barbaro and husband Aldo, Peter Naples, and Angela Motler and husband Mark; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Peter Naples, was well as daugh-

ter-in-law Tanya.Calling hours were

planned 6-9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 12, at the Lewis, Hur-ley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, with a recitation of the Rosary at 6.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 13, at St. Mary’s, with his son, Father Tim Naples, officiating. Interment will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Em-mons.

Memorial contributions may be made to Central NY Coalition for Life, PO Box 382, Oneonta, NY 13820.

The arrangements were entrusted to Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono.
