The water mill dates back severalcenturies and old farm buildings house manyfriendly animals including sheep, goats andcows. There is also a duck pond and tractorrides are available.

Alness In Bloom,Highlands, near InvernessThere are seven garden areas around thetown which are looked after by volunteersunder the umbrella group Alness in Bloom.These green spaces include a MillenniumGarden, a residents’ park, the High Streetand the entrance area to a local housingestate. Facilities are located within a fewminutes of each site.

Boat of GartenCommunity Garden,Highlands, near AviemoreA tranquil spot where visitors can enjoy thescenery and watch for trains chugging alongthe nearby Strathspey Steam Railway.

Bridgend Farm CommunityAllotment Health Project,EdinburghThis project started in March 2006 with fourplots and a greenhouse on an organicallotment site. Run by the NHS, it aims topromote health through organic fruit andvegetable growing, involving people of allages, ethnic backgrounds and abilities.

The Children’s Garden, GlasgowBased at Glasgow’s Botanic Gardens, the aimhere is to show that growing healthy food likefruit, vegetables and salad is fun and that theresults taste good too. Children take part inthe whole process, from planting seeds toharvesting. The garden is also used for artsand cultural and community events.

Glachbeg Croft EducationCentre, Highlands, near InvernessA farm and garden project providing hands-onprogrammes for schools and adults with specialneeds, plus community events such as arts andcrafts projects. Golspie Recycling and Environmental Action Network (GREAN), Highlands, near WickThis formerly derelict plot now provides miniallotments for local groups, using compostfrom the recycling project. Healthy Roots, AberdeenLocal volunteers are transforming derelict landinto an attractive community garden. It is agreat place for children to play and has lots ofwildlife. There is fruit to pick, vegetables togrow and compost to make. The garden isalso used by disabled groups.

Kinross Potager Garden, KinrossA range of flowers and vegetables are grownin this community garden by children fromthe local primary school and members of anadult education group. Plants are also usedaround the town by Kinross In Bloom.

Knowetop Community Farm, DumbartonThe farm was set up in 1980 on the edge of ahousing estate by a group of local residentswho were keen to improve the quality of lifein the area. Lothlorien Community,Corsock, DumfriesProvides therapeutic support for eightresidents with mental illness. The gardenscover a number of acres containing pasture,woodlands, pond, wild flower areas andwillow beds. Fruit and vegetables are grown inthe organic gardens, which are at the heart ofthe community’s working structure.

Lunnasting SchoolGrounds Project, ShetlandOriginally created when the local school wasrebuilt, the gardens now have severalinteresting features including dry stone walls, aplanticrub (sheltered plant enclosure), muralsand a mosaic. Crops are rotated each year andpupils are involved in most aspects of the work.

Learning facilities for children and workexperience opportunities are available.

Murton OrganicCommunity Garden, ForfarThis new garden is an extension of theMurton Trust’s environmental education parkand nature reserve, situated on a former sandand gravel quarry. The garden forms a stop onthe park’s nature trail and all food grown issold locally.

The Nursery Garden,East LothianActs as the HQ for Cockenzie and Port Setonin Bloom members. It comprises a polytunnel,three greenhouses, two sheds and a summerhouse. Volunteers tend plants for the publicgardens, containers and hanging baskets inthe town, together with plants for sale to thelocal community.

The Secret Garden, East LothianThe Secret Garden was created in 2002 by a local community group, transforming aderelict space into a tranquil woodlandgarden. Flat-topped stone walls borderwoodland and shrub areas and enclose agravelled seating area with a picnic table.Plants were chosen to attract wildlife.
