I’m Allison Smith, currently a Denver-based architectural designer focusing on residential design and design for a more intimate polis; through the use of materials, a background in classist traditions, and an understanding of the overall community. As a Master’s of Architecture student, I have been able to follow my passion for design by immersing myself in a wide range of practices. This includes sustainable studies with LEED Green Associate certification, working with small communities around the state of Colorado to provide designs for civic use, volunteering time to AIAS and AIA sponsored events, and participating in Esquisse challenges for ICAA certification. With a strong thirst for knowledge, I believe in designing for the community, to make the world a better place.

Working together as a cohesive unit, we took on the challenge of designing a live/work loft unit with gallery space into a small footprint in the middle of downtown Denver, CO. From beginning to end we referenced the IBC, Denver Building code, and the historic district of Denver to complete our design for a modern take of the historic district. The project consisted of plans, elevations, exploded axonometric drawings that showed the different systems of electric, mechanical, HVAC and how they help support the structure of our design. This project was the first time we embodied all systems, materiality, form and function into one cohesive building.

Using diagrams and historic research, I analyzed and designed a transit hub, dorm rooms, lecture hall, exhibition space, community rooms and small businesses within a site on the UCD campus with a creek running diagonally through the site. Using a system of banding elements that allow the entire building to be interacting with each other it allows for a system of thresholds that connect the outdoor campus environment with the overlapping programs within the architecture. Also, through manipulation of the landscape and allowing different levels of public interaction of the site it provides private and public interaction within an urban environment.

After repercussions of a recent flood in Lyons, Colorado we took on the project of redesigning a new City Hall and square for the heart of the small town. With many site visits, research and constant awareness of the necessities and characteristics of the town I designed a new public square for the residents to utilize and frames the different entrances of the town. The city hall takes common characteristics such as pilasters and pendants from throughout the town and translates them into a more classical tradition while still having the sense of an important building that belongs in Lyons. Using revit as my basis of modeling and measurement of city hall, I then exported the documents and configured them into a two sheet presentation that is hand drawn using the shaky hand technique.
