3Dear friends,

After OZMA’s visit in Nepal and their collaboration with Nepalese musicians, the next two months will be a blooming of events at the Alliance Française in Kathmandu, (hopefully) enough to get you overwhelmed!

It will first be an honour and an immense pleasure to welcome in Nepal Louis Bertignac and his musicians for two exceptional concerts in Kathmandu, along with a great friend of AFK, Bijaya Vaidya. These concerts are organized on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between France and Nepal, with Louis Bertignac and Bijaya Vaidya as Cultural Ambassadors!

Then in June we invite you to discover the numerous AFK events related to the now famous International Music (Day) Week, dedicated to French song and, of course, to Nepalese musicians.

The musical French scene is rich in dynamism and talented bands, and you’ll be given the possibility to discover one of them to conclude our Music Week: KWAK; a very special mix between rock music and French song, full of energy! With beautiful musical arrangements and French poetic lyrics, let KWAK surprise you…

Because we know your longing for events such as “Divinity of the common life”, we gave Karl Knapp who is back in Nepal a free hand to create, along with Salil Subedi, a new performance in the Alliance’s garden. Their creation, contemporary and committed, should move you as much as it will change our garden.

Finally on June 5 we will celebrate the International Environment Day with the screening, at the same time as the worldwide release, of “Home”, the new movie of Yann Arthus-Bertrand, a French photographer and filmmaker who tries to bring awareness of the environmental issues that we Earthlings are facing.

The movie will be broadcasted on Kantipur TV, and will be echoed at the Alliance by several conferences with environmental organisations… an event not to be missed, because it concerns us all.

On the classes’ side, this new session will see the launching of our second level of French for Hotel & Restaurant, a brand new program dedicated to professionals who want to learn French directly according to their business’ needs. French-speaking tourists in Nepal create a growing demand in services in French, and the Alliance’s mission is to accompany that trend.

With also the second edition of the European Film Festival, novelties at the library, delights from Le Bistrot, May and June at the Alliance will satisfy all your senses!

See you soon!

Alliance Française in Kathmandu & EarthBeat are very pleased to present and

to invite you to

The horn Of ShameA live performance involving art body work, paintings, music and sensory subjects by the Nepali multiform artist Salil Kanika and the French visual and performance artist Karl Knapp.

The performance is dedicated to the conservation efforts of the Great One Horned Rhino in Nepal. This is an unique event where art bridges the nature conservation to the urban community which is aware of the grave situation but is not acting effectively on it. So expect your participation together with the artists and see for yourself how fragile our environment is.

Care for the future of the planet and the wildlife? Then definitely come to share energy and voice your concern in the oneness of pure expression of heart.

Friday, May 8, at 6.30pm Alliance Française in Kathmandu

ALL ARE WELCOME - FREE EVENT

SaLIL SubedI KanIKaMultiform Artist; Founder EarthBeat Salil Subedi Kanika is an emerging Multiform performing artist as a didgeridoo player, theater actor, film maker, a social art activist and a sound performance artist based in Kathmandu. He is the founder of his dream project - EarthBeat - bridging children, youth and elders through new forms of art, music, sports and new cultural creations inspired from the nature and cultural heritage of the planet.

KarL KnaPPMultiform Artist; Performer www.karl-knapp.comKarl Knapp is a French-American artist now living and working in Marseille, France.

Painting, sculpting, photography, drawings are mixed with more ephemeral mediums such as performance. Usually the results are presented as installation. The belief that contemporary art is a tool for touching all levels of society compells him to create works that have direct interaction with people in the public place. The more original direction for him was this experimental fusion to making art.

Karl and Salil performed on the occasion of the multidisciplinary artistic performance, "Divinity of the common life", at Khula Manch last November.

This will be another occasion to enjoy an interesting combination of their work on a smaller format. For Art-lovers and for onlookers, do not miss this committed piece of art, which will be strong and visual !

The celebrated guitarist of the erstwhile legendary French rock group Téléphone, the French equivalent of Rolling Stones, has a lot of followers in Nepal. Popularly known as Keith Richards of France, Louis Bertignac produced, arranged and played guitar on the debut album by French First-lady Carla Bruni, 'Quelqu'un m'a dit'. In turn, Bruni contributed lyrics to 10 of the 12 songs for Bertignac’s album 'Longtemps'.

In Rock Nepal 2, Louis Bertignac will be accompanied by internationally famous drummer Felix Sabal-Lecco. With his roots in Africa and his head in the total world of music, Paris-based Felix Sabal-Lecco plays a worldly blend of Afro, funk, fusion and jazz. He was also part of the famous rock group Sting. Well-known French bass guitarist Cyril Danish will also be part of Louis Bertignac’s team.

Nepal’s internationally-acclaimed rock-sitar player Bijaya Vaidya and his group, Rock Sitar, will provide additional colour to the show.

Along his musical career, Bijaya has helped establish many different musical and cultural academy in Nepal. In Nepal he is regarded as a legendary Sitar player and the most known recording artist and performer. This acclaim comes out from his long years of efforts in promoting Nepali music and opening new doors for the Nepali music industry.

Already one year is gone! last year, we celebrated the international music Day, on June 21, 2008, on Durbar marg, just in front of the old Palace, and this event gathered more than 25 000 people during the afternoon, enjoying the music of more than 10 nepalese bands.

For the 2009 edition, we have planned something totally different from last year in terms of organiza-tion and musical styles.

First of all, the international music Day becomes this year the international music week, which means more music… and more occasions to celebrate!

the idea of this 2009 edition is to allow the expression of all styles of music in a cheerful atmosphere to popularize musical practice for young and not so young people from all social backgrounds.

music always gives an opportunity to communicate and share special moments, this is the spirit of the international music (week) Day !

All the various events are free of charge! Come and enjoy!

The learner’s cornerYou may think “Er... I’m only a beginner, there are no books for me at the library”… and indeed when one starts to learn a language it is difficult to find books matching one’s level in a library full of books written in that language!

At the AFK, we are convinced that a library should not afraid students, but on the contrary feed the appetite for words, right from the beginning: this is why we are starting to set up a “Learner’s Corner”, specially dedicated to students, even the ones from the very first level.

on the same shelf, you will find:

- books to be read at any level, from beginners to advanced students... we’ve selected some books and classified them so that you can easily find the one that matches your level; - methods and exercises books, because going to classes is never enough... and, to make it easier, we bought an exercises book with instructions and explanations in English;- reference books and dictionaries, with a brand new one for beginners, users friendly and full of pictures.

Ask the librarians, they will help you to find the books you’re dreaming of!

SILENT WITNESSESstencil artwork by Aymeric Hamon

Brunch + exhibition on Saturday, May 16, from 10am

Stencils are a means to pull a new vision out of a sculpture, from three to two dimensions. On the canvas, one can still feel the touch of clay or wood, but these original materials aren’t there anymore, and neither the full dimensions of the sculpture. It brings them a new presence, free and aimless, that you can fill with your own thoughts or feelings – and maybe that’s why they are silent witnesses.

The Alliance Française in Kathmandu is very pleased to announce you that the short film of Deepak Rauniyar, "Threshold", on the Madhes-Pahad has just been nominated at Cannes Festival (France), for the short film corner selection.

AFK is planning to organize a public screening in Kathmandu in the coming weeks. We will let you know via email or just visit www.alliancefrancaise.org.np regularly.

'Threshold' reflects a changing Nepal after the peace process where everyone is asking each other how the state can be restructured. The film raises the same question, but in a more intimate and domestic context - one in which a woman searches for her identity and a life outside the confines of the family home.

"... Deepak Rauniyar is obviously as courageous as he is capable. This is clear from his 30 minute directorial fiction debut Chaukaith (Threshold), which opened the Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival (KIMFF) ..."

- Kanak Mani Dixit, Nepali Times

“…Rauniyar’s film shows us a part of Nepal we rarely see, and briefly invites us into the worlds of two women with subtlety, pathos, good humour and beautiful camera work and acting.”

- Charles Haviland, BBC News

The Festival de Cannes is the most important film event in the world. Its role has thus grown rich over the course of the years to the rhythm of the evolution of cinema itself: selecting and promoting films and artists, welcoming professionals, implementing new sets of dynamics in support of creation... in a word, serving the cinema in all its dimensions.
