An allergy is an abnormally sensitive (exuber-
ant) reaction of the immune system to certainforeign environmental substances. The reac-
tion is called “exuberant” because the body’s
own immune system responds to foreign sub-
stances (e.g. pollen) that otherwise present
no health risk, unlike germs. Most allergies
involve animal proteins or plant matter, e.g.
from flower pollens, mites and molds.

Allergy test photos are available in the Image-
Bank. Microphotos and REM - photographs
of allergens, house-dust mites and other
agents. 3D images and illustrations of pollen
and mechanisms of action.
Diagnosis
An allergy can manifest itself in the form of
slight rashes, as well as in life-threatening
reactions (anaphylactic allergic reaction). Ifa patient has shown a reaction to a certain
medication (agent or adjuvant), the medica-
tion as well as chemically related substances
should not be given in the future.
Symptoms
Allergies can cause the following symptoms:
Respiratory illnesses (e.g. constant sniff-
ling, nasal polyps, paranasal sinusitis, hay
fever, bronchial asthma)
Skin irritations (e.g. urticaria, contact ecze-
ma, neurodermatitis)
Eye problems (e.g. conjunctivitis)
Digestive tract problems (e.g. nausea,
cramps, diarrhea)
Fever (e.g. hay fever)

The two stages of an allergy In the first stage, an antigen enters the body
and is absorbed and changed by a phagocy-
te. The T helper cells stimulate the B lympho-
cytes to produce antibodies. The next time
contact is made with the antigen, it binds to
the antibodies formed in the first step that
are attached to mastocytes. The mastocytesthen release mediators, e.g. histamine, sero-
tonin, prostaglandin). These lead to the aller-
gic symptoms.
