mproving Wastewater ManagementStormwater overflow, which dumps raw sewage into our rivers during heavy rains, represents

real environmental challenge for the region. In response to an EPA consent decree, theAllegheny Conference convened a blue ribbon panel chaired by Jared Cohon to determineways that wastewater management in the 83-municipality ALCOSAN service area could bemproved through greater regionalization.

“We’ve made real progress in improving the way our region’sstormwater system is managed. Work is under way to transfer trunksewer lines from municipal control to ALCOSAN, to broaden suburbanrepresentation on the ALCOSAN board and to implement regionalgreen infrastructure initiatives.”

mproving the Region’sEconomic CompetivenessThe Greater Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce makes the case in Harrisburg and Washington,D.C. for the Allegheny Conference’s agenda to create a more competitive economic climate.Working with partners across the state, we’ve been successful in continuing the phase-outf the Capital S tock and Franchise Tax, and in making positi ve structural changes to the

Corporate Net Income Tax. We provided leadership in convening the Coalition for SustainableCommunities, a statewide alliance committed to addressing unfunded pension liabilities andnbalanced Act 111 practices.

“A more competitive economic climate encourages employers toexpand and locate here, which in turn creates well-paying jobsthat can suppor t families. The progress we’ve made in makingPennsylvania’s economic climate more competitive helps levelthe playing field with neighboring states.”

–  Richard HarshmanChair, Greater Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce

“Our achievements as a region are reason to celebrate, bafford to become complacent. We still have work to do. It’sfocus our energies on tackling a new challenge – the comour population and our workforce.”

The Next Generation of Leaders Our region’s future will be defined by the next generation of leaders. We must dof educating, training, advancing and attracting enough people to fill the jobs thacreated and the jobs of the retiring Baby Boom generation.

We asked a few of the region’s young leaders what it wil l take to retain and attralike them in a video that we created for our 2014 annual meeting.
