Loss management, risk assessment and technical to the general insurance and business communities ALLAN BARKER Professional Qualifications Senior Associate, Australian & New Zealand Institute of Insurance & Finance Qualified Practising Insurance Broker Diploma of Financial Services (Insurance Broking) Professional Experience Allan commenced his career with the Schweppes division of Cadbury Schweppes as a Product Manager – Marketing, where he was involved in projects like launching Solo soft drink, advertising, market research, packaging, design, sales promotion across all Schweppes products. This role involved in-depth research with both consumers and retailers to develop appropriate marketing and promotional strategies, including sponsorship of motor racing and national shopping centre displays of this promotion across the nation. After 4 years with Schweppes Allan joined Citicorp/Citibank as Marketing Manager insurance. In this strategic role Allan was responsible for overall marketing policies for product, price, promotion and distribution functions and transformed the old Ajax Insurance (owned by Citicorp) into Citigeneral/Citilife Insurance Australia. This whole process had to be approved by the US Federal Reserve and it was the first time a US bank was authorised to set up and own a Life Insurance company outside the United States. After having established the two new companies Allan moved back to Victoria for family reasons and spent two years as the Victorian State Manager for Citilife Insurance, adding front line insurance company management experience to his repertoire. After six years with Citicorp/Citibank Allan was recruited as Marketing Manager by Swann Insurance Pty Ltd. In the next nine years Allan re-developed all Swann products and developed many new ones. By working with the branch sales forces Allan grew the business tenfold over that nine year period, with a strong focus on product profitability. Swann still remains the only general insurer never to have made an underwriting loss, i.e., before adding Investment Income. In 1990 Allan was recruited by Colonial Mutual Group as Distribution Marketing Manager and developed a new distribution strategy for Colonial, including contributing to their Asian development strategy. Having developed the strategy, Allan then moved to Indonesia for three years as Managing Director – Astra Jardine CMG Life where he recruited and trained all key operations staff and developed a sales force of over 600 agents from ground up. Upon returning to Australia from Indonesia, Allan was recruited by Australian Unity as General Manager – Insurance, where he was responsible for both Australian Unity General Insurance and Australian Unity Health Fund. Allan’s duties incorporated all usual CEO functions, including financial management, board reporting, strategy and operational management. Since 1996 Allan has spent the last 17 years in Corporate Insurance Broking, first with BJS Insurance Brokers and for the Last ten years with Cowdens, a major national broker. Allan’s roles have been providing broking and risk management advice to major global corporate clients, with an emphasis on major property and liability programs and international placements with Lloyds, Asian, European and US insurers. Allan’s expertise here is in reviewing business risks and developing complete risk management functions and analysis for clients. These can be for any type of business or organisation, insurers or insurance brokers. Allan is also available as an expert witness for matters requiring a broker’s perspective.
