ALLAHABAD CITY RAILWAY STATION

Allahabad (Uttar Pradesh)

Unit Profile

Allahabad city railway station was established in the year 1967 and is under

Varanasi division of N.E. Railway. Allahabad, one of the largest cities of eastern U.P.,

is situated on the confluence of River Ganges, Yamuna and the invisible Saraswati

(Triveni).

It has been one of the most sacred places since ancient times and was known as

Prayag in earlier time. The place is considered as one of the mast sacred soul

cleansing bathing destinations, important bathing fairs are Magh Mela (every year),

Ardh Kumbh Mela (every sixth year), Kumbh Meal (every 12th Year).

Allahabad city railway station is also known as Rambagh. The total electrical

connected load of the stations is 108kW and the power supply provided by a 2 x 250

kVA, 11/0.4 kV transformer substation, with a generator back up of 1 x 62.5 kVA,

1x30 kVA & 1 x 15 kVA Diesel generating sets for emergency essential service.

Energy Conservation Measures

1) Replacement of existing T-12 fittings with energy efficient T5 fittings

300 nos. 40 W fluorescent tube light fittings with copper ballast were replaced by

energy efficient 28 W T-5 fittings having electronic ballast with approx saving of

32850Kwh/year. Out of these 300 nos. T-5 fittings, 224 nos. 40 W indoor T-12 FTLs

have been replaced by 28 W T-5 fittings and 76 nos. 40 W street light FTL have

been replaced by outdoor 2 x 14 W T-5 fittings.

2 x 14 W T5 outdoor Fittings 28 W T5 indoor Fitting

2) Replacement of existing high wattage ceiling fans with energy efficient

fans

23 nos Energy Efficient ceiling Fans have been provided in place of high wattage

ceiling Fans with approx saving of 3974Kwh/year.

High Wattage Ceiling Fan Low Wattage Ceiling Fan

3) Use of 30% & 70% segregation of lighting load

Normally, when a train is about to arrive in station then passenger rush is maximum

requiring 100% lights to be operational but after about 15 mins. When the train has

left and no train is about to arrive, platform is relatively empty giving us a window

(about 7 hours per day) to reduce number of operational lights. This fact has been

utilized to save energy. During such time 70% of lights are switched off through a

centralized switch resulting in huge energy saving with approx saving of

15560Kwh/year.

4) Use of Timer switches on in High mast tower lights

High mast tower lights are controlled by timer switches according to pre-set timing

switch off during non working hours and non essential lights during nights with

approx saving of 10220Kwh/year.

5) Replacement of existing electric geyser with solar water heater

Solar water heaters have been provided in running room replacing electric geyser

with approx saving of 1800Kwh/year.

Solar Water Heater

6) Replacement of 400 W Metal Halide lamp with 250 W Metal Halide lamp

32 nos 250 W Metal Halide lamps have been provided to meet required illumination

levels in place of 400 W Metal Halide lamp with approx saving of 8760 kWh/year.

MADHUPUR RAILWAY STATION

Madhupur (Jharkhand)

Unit Profile

Madhupur Railway station is an ‘A’ category junction station in Eastern Railway. It

was commissioned prior 1970 and having a built up area 11369 sqm with an air-

conditioned area of 33.44 sqm. Total connected load of the building is 201 KW

(2013-14) and having a contact demand of 300 kVA. The power supply is provided

by 2 x 300 kVA, 11/0.4 kVA transformer sub-station with a generator back-up of

250 kVA and 187.5 kVA DG sets for emergency essential services.

Energy consumption in 2012-13 & 2013-14

In 2012-13 electricity consumed from the grid was 4.28 lakhs units and units

generate through DG was 4.78 lakhs units having total 9.06 units. In 2013-14

electricity consumed from grid was 3.3 lakh units and that of through DG set was

3.25 lakh units. Total energy consumed in this year was 6.38 lakhs units.

There was a total savings of 2.68 lakhs units with respect to 2012-13 and this

saving of units was achieved without affecting the system efficiency.

Energy Conservation Measures /Energy management policy

Effective energy utilization was taken as an energy management policy by the top

level & according it the following efforts were made for these units saving as:

a) Efforts made without expenditure:

• Review of use of high mast towers: Many fittings of high mast towers were

made removed as it was not required. At MDP station, total 12 Nos. fittings,

each 2 x 400 wattage removed.

Page 9: ALLAHABAD CITY RAILWAY STATION · 2016-03-29 · Allahabad city railway station was established in the year 1967 and is under Varanasi division of N.E. Railway. ... Division under

• Review of ACs: As ACs are measure power consuming machines. A review was

carried out and AC machines were removed as per Railway Board’s circular. At

Madhupur station, one No AC was removed.

• Pumping of optimization: pumping hours were made regulated and optimized on

water need basis. It has also contributed in energy saving.

• Lowering down of indoor T-5 fittings as office premises and removing

unnecessary fittings: At station building and other offices on station the T-5

fittings were made lowered down & it was found that illumination level was

increased and the same time unnecessary fittings were removed.

• Sensitizing officers & staffs to save electricity: Officers, staff were made

sensitized towards energy conservation through scouts, regular seminars,

energy saving slogans, banners, posters & pasting theme based stickers at

various locations & by promoting the use of day light.

b) Efforts made with expenditure:

• Phasing out of halogens, HPSV, metal halide & incandescent lamps: These

fittings were replaced by energy efficient fittings like T-5, CFL with reflector. It

resulted into a considerable amount of units saving.

• By ensuring the proper working of 70-30% lightings segregation at platform:

The 70-30% segregation were made MANUALLY ON AND AUTOMATIC OFF. It

was noticed that 30% circuit was not being made operational by concerned staff

even after departure of train. With this system once 70% is made ON by Station

manager, it got switched off automatically after five to fifteen minutes as per

setting.

• Replacing double holder indoor lights by single holder tube lights with reflector:

Where 2x28 W fittings were not required, these were replaced with 1x28 W

fitting.

• Replacement of old ceiling fans with energy efficient fans: Old ceiling fans were

replaced with energy efficient ceiling fans.

• Replacement of glow-sign boards with retro-reflecting boards.
