LUTHERAN CHURCH & PRESCHOOL ALL SAINTS SEPTEMBER 2017 Thank you! A huge to thank you to all of you for making my transition into Director of Children, Youth, and Families Ministry so comfortable and smooth. Don’t get me wrong, there is still TONS of work to do, but I am amazed at the grace and kindness you all have shown me thus far. I am grateful to God for allowing us this exciting opportunity that is ahead. As I write this, we are kicking off our Wednesday Night Live program. I can’t wait for this time of fellowship, community, and bible study. I hope you take advantage of this wonderful intergenerational time to meet some new people. I have also met with some of the mid high and senior high youth and their parents to discern where God will lead us this year in faith formation. Speaking of Faith Formation… another thing that I am very excited about is starting “Faith Formation in the 21 st Century” through Vibrant Faith. The church of today is different than the church of the past. This is a two-year course that will guide me, and you the congregation, through building a comprehensive plan on how to reach people we haven’t reached previously. How to include the youth of our church and outside our church to worship in new ways. I would love to provide them new opportunities to lead in the church so it becomes a part of their identity. We want to teach the faith through expanded worship opportunities. The purpose of including and encouraging children in church (as well as their parents) is not to “improve our numbers”. It’s to get the gospel into their bones and to infect them with a grace, love, and commitment to peace through God. Speaking of worship opportunities… I ask you to prayerfully consider signing up to volunteer with your younger members. There are so many ways to get involved. You could sign up for a Sunday to teach our elementary aged children bible stories during Bible break-out. This is a great, easy way to teach God’s children. All the materials are provided for you and it’s only about 20 minutes during each service. You could also volunteer to teach a bible study to our elementary, mid high or senior high youth during Wednesday Night Live at 5:30 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. This is an hour long commitment, but again materials are provided. Or you could volunteer to coordinate one of many mid/senior high activities that we will be having during the year- service projects, fundraising, and group events. I hope you are as excited as me as we look towards our future. Change is hard, but good. And God is great. With His guidance, we will move forward in trust – focusing on the future, not the past. “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.” Psalm 32:8 ~ Martha Montaño

God's Work / Our Hands Service Projects September 9-10 is the ELCA God's Work-Our Hands service weekend, and a member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church has organized service projects that all Albuquerque churches can participate in. Over 25 backpacks are filled each week to be taken home by needy students on Friday for weekend meals. Refrigeration space is almost non‐existent so no fresh or frozen food will be accepted. New to All Saints? Interested in finding out more abut us? You are invited to a Newcomer Lunch on Sunday,

September 17, at 12:15 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall.

We will share lunch and stories – yours and ours;

take a tour of the church; and hear from council

members and ministry leaders about our ministries

here at All Saints. You may decide to formally join us

on Sunday, September 24, when we receive

new members during the 9:00 a.m. service.

Whether or not you make it official, you are

welcome here as part of our community of

worship, service and fellowship.

Middle School Confirmation This year our middle school students (grades 6-8) will meet on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. for a combination Confirmation class and youth group. We will use a curriculum called Re-form, which uses funny videos and a Anti-workbook to explore topics such as the Creed, the Bible, Jesus, and

Tough Questions. All middle school students are welcome – bring a friend – come for supper at 6:30 p.m. or Youth Choir at 5:30 p.m.

What do you identify as key characteristics of the ELCA that matter to you?

35 people gathered this week, at three different times, to talk about Claiming our Gifts as Christians in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. We started by identifying the gifts we value at All Saints and in the ELCA, and here are the responses:

Inclusive Grace Liberal Liturgy – connects us to Christians in history Togetherness Thinking, challenging Grace Youth programs – ELCA, synod, and local Willingness to Change – re-formation Bible based Social justice Open and affirming Music! Education/Bible study Work toward fixing problems Potlucks! Giving Consistent theology Reaching out No hierarchy – all are ministers Action Open communion Advocacy Communion to homebound Love and acceptance Don’t believe the Bible literally Social Statements – developed collectively Not heavy on rules WELCA Informal – come as you are/be who you are Friendly people Gospel oriented Luther and the spirit of reformation/rebellion

The conversations continue the next three weeks with conversations at 12:15 p.m. Sundays, 10:30 a.m.

and 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays, as we talk about the gifts of our Practices, Ecclesiology (the way we are

church), and Legacy. There will also be a retreat using the same videos on Saturday, September 9, 9:00

a.m. – 1:00 p.m.; cost is $10, please register ahead by calling the church office.

PRESCHOOL KORNER by Marleta Anderson ~ A ministry of All Saints Lutheran Church

We’re Back! The Preschool is back and in session. Once again the teachers have amazed us with their creativity in the classrooms. Check out Classroom 4 the new Infant/Toddler room. Teachers this year are Alisa Castillo, Victoria Montes, and Marleta Anderson, Director. THEME FOR THIS SCHOOL YEAR IS “WE CAN, YOU CAN, GOD CAN” Children at the preschool will be studying the “We Can” curriculum with interesting topics, science, geography and math. NEW this year is the introduction of the Infant/Toddler Room. Currently, we have three enrolled in this class. The room can handle 3 babies and 3 toddlers. AUGUST / SEPTEMBER CALENDAR 8/30 & 31 First Chapel & Birthday Celebration Days 9/4 NO SCHOOL-Labor Day 9/6 & 7 Grandparents Tea and Chapel 9/19 & 20 Fall Trike-a-thon FINANCIALLY In the last few years with the economic conditions as they are and the fact that there are preschools/daycares all around us the preschool has been moving forward to re-invent itself. When free pre-k started our program dropped to 2 year olds. This year we have opened for Infants/Toddlers. Another major problem is that the big name for profit centers can advertise more and together. A new brochure and flyer will be ready soon and available in the narthex. Please take several copies and give them to friends, family or neighbors. Keep the Preschool in your prayers. NEEDS & WANTS The Preschool teachers and staff are always on the lookout for many items. Donations are happily accepted. Suggestions: buttons, sequins, scraps of fun things, blank paper, newsprint, paper towel rolls, clean baby food jars, clean dress up clothes and accessories. Other useful items include Kleenex, wipes, toilet paper, paper towels and small drinking cups.

Dinner for Six (or Seven) Start-Up Event It is September and with the fall season comes the resuming of our Dinner for Six “social season” starting in October. A sign-up sheet is in the Narthex for all who are interested in participating this year. Haven’t tried Dinner for 6 before? Give it a try. Couples, singles, all are welcome. As a fun start-up to the year’s program, the Hyde’s will host an appetizer/tapas evening at their home. Anyone who has ever participated, plans to participate or would like to know what Dinner for Six is about, come on over and join in. Please bring an appetizer or tapas to share with the group.

Beverages will be provided. Mark your calendar: Friday, September 15, starting at 6:00PM at 490 Ranchitos Road in Corrales. Questions? Contact Tom Hyde @ home 898-1987, cell 515-7535, or email [email protected]. Looking forward to seeing you there and, yes, feel free to bring the kids along.

How to Act Boldly on Your Faith Women remain a powerful force in the ministry of the church. Whether quilting, cooking, teaching or preaching, their hands perform the work that needs to get done. Your Rocky Mountain Synod Women’s Organization invites you to come experience the passions and ministry of Women: Past and Present in a 3 day Gathering, October 6-8 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Aurora, Colorado (adjacent to the Denver airport). Judy Messal, a member of All Saints in Albuquerque, is one of the presenters. Judy will share her border immersion activities and aspirations. Other presenters will share their attempts to improve lives through prison ministry, human trafficking intervention, homelessness solutions, political advocacy and international projects. All describe how women today can have just as much influence on our culture as the women of the Bible had on their cultures. Join us in October and get charged up to act boldly on your faith. Registration forms are located in the narthex or contact Rhonda Bentz RMSWO Board member at [email protected]. The lower cost registration ($50) deadline is September 5. Our church has money to help with your registration, travel and lodging. Please call Rhonda Bentz 505.301-6662 or Sharon Ellis 505.892-7638. We can guide you through the scholarship process.

How can I help you...what do you need... These are the things that I heard as the vacation bible school staff prepared for the week. Each day volun‐teers appeared and offered the same words. Boy, did we need help—making crafts, preparing for water day, games, Bible classes, serving lunch, and making transitions happen smoothly for 71 children. One ex‐ample of the feedback from the children was, “This was more fun than my regular summer school”. The last day, I met a boy speeding around the corner and told him to please slow down because I didn’t want to be knocked over and fall on my bad hip. He reared back and looked at me with concern. Much to my surprise, he enclosed me in a big hug, saying in my ear, “I’m sorry!” Thanks to everyone who made this wonderful ministry happen. ~ Brenda Culbertson

All Saints’ Make It Simple Commitment Campaign Will Be Kicking-off in October Now that the time and talent survey is finished and the results are being shared with those committees and activities needing personnel, All Saints’ stewardship emphasis will be shifting to enabling the congregation in sharing each member’s treasure and supporting our mission. Starting in October and continuing into November, Stewardship Committee members and other individuals interested in the financial well-being of All Saints will be sharing information about why it is important for each congregation member to commit a portion of her or his treasure (in other words, make a financial pledge) so we can all assist with achieving our mission and ensuring the current and future success of our church. We are planning to conduct these activities: October 1 Watch for an email this week describing the Make it Simple Commitment Campaign October 8 We will kick off the Make it Simple campaign in worship with “Following Jesus” Sunday October 15 Watch for a letter which expands on the Make It Simple theme and has a Commitment Card enclosed. November 5 All Saints Sunday – we will explore our work together as the saints of God in this place and how our commitments further the work of the saints who have come before us. November 12 Commitment Sunday! Bring your Commitment Card, and we will gather and bless our commitments for ministry in 2018. We hope every member will look deep into her or his heart, determine how they can financially support All Saints’ mission and activities, and make a commitment to do so. Peace, Jeff Yingling, Stewardship Chair Make It Simple Program Committee Members: Jerry Ferdig, Pam and Tim Hanson, Jim Kruger, Kristin Schultz

Family Promise Sign-up for Hosting September 17-24 It is just a few weeks we will again receive Family Promise guests at All Saints. We are excited to have a new partnership with the Latter Day Saints Cottonwood Ward who are interested in participating in the Family Promise program. They will be assisting us with meals, hosting times and overnights. Cross of Hope will also be continuing to partner with us. Sign-up sheets will initially be posted at both All Saints Church and the LDS church with alternating openings to avoid duplicate sign-ups. The week before our hosting any remaining openings will be sent to all 3 churches to recruit volunteers

as needed. So, if you have particular times and ministries you would like to volunteer for, please check out the sheets and sign up today. It is exciting to have this additional church working with us. There are many slots to fill and many hands working together makes the work lighter for all of us in fulfilling this important ministry.

All Saints Lutheran Church and Preschool Albuquerque, New Mexico

ELCA Rocky Mountain Synod

MISSION STATEMENT

As God’s forgiven people: + We welcome all in Christ’s love.

+ We grow together in faith and life. + We go out to love and serve others.

VISION STATEMENT

We Welcome: All Saints Lutheran Church & Preschool welcomes all who are seeking God’s love and grace. We are a Reconciling in Christ Church where all are welcome regardless of age, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender expression, relationship status, socio-economic circumstances, abilities, or anything that divides us. We strive to be a compassionate church that cares for all people.

We Grow: We encourage lifelong learning and strengthening relationships with God and each other, using caring conversations, fellowship, prayer, study, devotions, and service projects that are a part of our faith formation for children, youth, and adults. These activities often work best if developed in the family home or in small groups. Worship, with inspirational music and Gospel centered messages, is important for our growth and development. God’s love is poured out as we gather around Word, water, wine, and bread.

We Go: We go out with joyful and meaningful involvement in service and support to our community and world. All members discover and use their God given gifts to support God’s mission through our words and actions. We are challenged to embody the open arms of Christ on the cross as we are involved in “God’s work. Our hands.” As we go into the troubled and broken places in our community and world, we advocate, witness, and share the love of God.
