Racial Justice Sunday 28 January

Belonging: All are Welcome On this day Catholics are called to pray for those who experience unjust discrimination or are marginalised because of their race and ethnicity. We think in particular of those who feel they do not belong within our society or our communities because of this discrimination. As Catholics we are asked to treat all humans with dignity, regardless of their background

or circumstance. There are many stories of alienation throughout the Bible, with clear calls to ‘Love the stranger’. That the Church is a place where all belong is clearly seen in the recent Feast of Epiphany, when Christ is revealed not only to the Israelites, but to all of God’s people. All the money raised will go towards supporting the Church’s work on racial justice issues. The theme this year is ‘Belonging’, emphasising that we are called not only to ensure that our parishes welcome newcomers, strangers, and those from different backgrounds, but also that all people will know they will find a welcome in our parishes. There will be a retiring collection at all Masses on 28 January for Racial Justice.

Quiz Result A HUGE thank you to everyone who donated £1 (or more) for our ADVENTurous Winter Quiz which raised £133 towards the Parish Weekend at Treyarnon Bay. We were also handed a further £40 and as usual the prize is donated, so you’ve helped us raise an unsurpassed grand total of £173! It’s a record! Thank you SO much! Many of our regulars have scolded us for the level of difficulty this time – we’ll try to do better at our next attempt! Only two entries managed scores over 90, but the ultimate winner by one point is Hilary Matthews from Nici’s yoga class! We cast our net far and wide! So, now that you’ve limbered up your little grey cells, you’ll be glad to know another quiz is in the making! Hopefully ready for Easter so watch this space! Nici and Hilary P.S. Apologies to Professor Branestawm and Babar the Elephant…

Wanted!

Do you have any unwanted DVD’s or chocolates that you could donate for CAFOD please? These will be used during Craft Group meetings to make up baskets. Please leave in the porch or give to CAFOD members. Marcia

Share the journey – CAFOD’s new campaign for

2018 Pope Francis launched the ‘Share the Journey’ global campaign for Caritas Internationalis on 27 September 2017. Inspired by Catholic faith, Caritas is the helping hand of the Church – reaching out to the poor, vulnerable and excluded, regardless of race or religion, to build a world based on justice and fraternal love. With over 160 members, Caritas is the second largest relief agency in the world, behind only the Red Cross. CAFOD is the Caritas member in England and Walesl

Francesco Tuccio, a carpenter from the small Italian island of Lampedusa, when hundreds of refugees drowned off the coast of Lampedusa, was moved to gather the driftwood from the wrecked boats and turn them into crosses, which he offered to survivors as a small but powerful symbol of hope. The words in the picture say: “We ourselves need to see, and then to enable others to see, that migrants and refugees are brothers and sisters to be welcomed, respected and loved” Pope Francis CAFOD has sent one of Francesco Tuccio’s crosses to every Cathedral in England & Wales inviting them to display it.

A welcoming Imitative Following requests from parishioners, the OLSP Welcoming Group has recently been saving seats down the left hand side of the church for families with young children who prefer to sit close to the cloister, and down the right hand side for parishioners who arrive late for Mass, in the hope of causing less disruption to the main body of the church. This trial has been a great success and will now be implemented permanently. Please be generous therefore in leaving these seats vacant until well after the beginning of Mass. Also be aware that, although the seats on the left hand side may appear free, the families may well be at Children’s Liturgy and will expect to reclaim their seats on their return. Many thanks Chris

Calling all young musicians! We are looking for young people of the parish to join the music group or even form a youth band. We would love

more young people to come together to serve the parish through music and have fun together at the same time. If you are school/student age and either play an instrument or sing please do get in touch we would love to hear from you. Please contact the Parish Office, Mary Stocker, Richard King or Jillian Wilce and we will get the ball rolling!
