As we celebrate All Saints Day this weekend, we remember those who have witnessed to the love and mercy of God. Each one of us, called to be a saint, can model God’s unconditional love for the world. On Monday, Sister Carolee and the second graders at St. Benedict will dress as their favorite saint and learn more about these witnesses of the Gospel.

Parents and students met with the teachers this past week for conferences. Overall a very positive experience, 99% of our families participated.

A big thanks to Annie Bride and her team from Dockside Restaurant for hosting our Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser on September 23. I apologize for this late acknowledgement. Annie B donates the food and her staff prepares a delicious meal every year. Profit for this year’s dinner was $2,242. A special thanks, also, to all our volunteers for the Salad Luncheon on October 16. The salad selections were delicious and all attendees enjoyed the conversation and community. And thanks to our parishioners for attending these wonderful functions!

Interested in learning more about St. Benedict School? Please call the school to make an appointment at 740-432-6751, x102. I would be happy to answer your questions and provide a tour. Come and see why our parents leave their parent-teacher conferences with smiles on their faces!

Blessings, Jane Rush

This week we have an important day of voting on Tuesday, November 3rd. For key statewide issues, you can go to the Ohio Conference of Catholic Bishops’ website www.ohiocathconf.org. There you can see, for example, information on why Issue 3 is being opposed. Also, the organization Ohio Right to Life (www.ohiolife.org) has voter information. They, too, cite numerous key health organizations in Ohio (namely, Ohio Children’s Hospital Association, Ohio State Medical Association, Ohio Hospital Association, Ohio Nurses Association, Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Ohio Chapter of American Academy of Pediatrics) who oppose legalizing marijuana for recreational usage, noting, among other things, the seriously harmful effects on child development.

I’d like to continue to remind you about our parish’s online account at formed.org. This is an online site that has a full range of faith formation resources, for all members of the family and for all degrees of familiarity with the Catholic faith. You can establish a free personal account with access to all of the resources by using our parish code when you register initially. Our parish access code is QARQ3C.

I’d also like to refresh reminders about a couple upcoming events in November. Next Sunday an organizational gathering is planned for the formation of a widows and widowers group. This is planned for Sunday afternoon, November 8th, at 2:30 p.m. in the St. Benedict social hall.

And, the Knights of Columbus are hosting an Altar Server recognition open gym and pizza party on Sunday afternoon, November 15th, at 2:00 p.m. in the St. Benedict gym. Thank you to all of our altar servers!

Finally, I’d like to test the waters about interest in sending a parish group to World Youth Day in Krakow, Poland next summer. The recommended age group for this is 15 – 30, basically high school through young adults. Please let me know as soon as possible if you are interested so that we could decide to either get the ball rolling or wait for the next one in 2018. It would likely cost ~$2,500 per person, based on initial estimates. We would plan to stay with host families in Poland rather than in hotels to help keep the costs down. We had a group from our Guernsey County parishes that participated in WYD 2005 in Cologne, Germany.

May the Lord continue to help us all to journey together ever more joyfully, always ready for the gift of eternal life.

Come and see Guy Googins as Sherlock Holmes! St. Benedict parents will help to serve the meals and desserts. Profit from this weekend helps fund the 2017 Washington, D.C. trip for our 7th & 8th graders. Call 1-800-933-5480 or search www.VisitGuernseyCounty.com to learn more about the event.

READINGS FOR THE 32ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMESunday, November 8, 2015

We are challenged by the faith of two women: the widow who gives Elijah the last of her food and the widow who puts her last small coin in the temple collection box. These women point to two hard teachings: that we are not to be overly proud of the small percentage we give back to God and that we should prepare to give everything. Such lessons are hard to hear, so let us pray together for open minds and hearts.

The focus of our readings is giving generously__not of excess, but from our need. Underlying this giving, of course, is faith. Faith allowed the wid-ow to give all she had to live on at the request of the prophet Elijah. She was rewarded by God’s generosity. In the Gospel, Jesus praises a poor widow for giving two small coins to the temple treasury. Her gift was praised by Jesus, not for its amount, but because it was all she had to live on and thus was an expression of her faith and total gift of self. We may be assured that his praise was accompanied by salvation since the Gospel consistently assumes faith and total surrender as prerequisite for salvation.

1 Kings 17:10-16The poor widow gives all she has to Elijah.- To whom would I give all that I have?

Hebrews 9:24-28Christ suffered for our sins.- How do I acknowledge that I have been freed from sin through the suffering of Christ?

Mark 12:38-44The widow’s mite.- How do I share my “treasure” with God, the Church, the poor and needy?

After this week’s special focus on All Saints Day, next week we return to the Year B progression primarily through the Gospel of Mark. Next week’s Gospel will be drawn from Mark 12, getting closer to the end of that Gospel. And, likewise, we are drawing closer to the end of our “liturgical” (i.e. “Church”) year as well. The readings’ themes, therefore, both offer some important summary statements by Jesus and provide some insights into the “end times.”

Throughout the Bible, God is revealed to us both as being the awesome creator of the universe, worthy of our most profound respect, and as being filled with kind and generous compassion. In an important summary statement, Jesus shows us the primary reason God grows angry.

God does not like hypocrisy. That word has its roots in the Greek word for “actor.” God does not like it when

we pretend about our faith. Jesus is highly critical of people who put on a show in order to derive material and social benefit from their faith. He wants both our heart and our actions to be genuine and focused on what is good (and on the One who is Goodness itself).

In next Sunday’s Gospel Jesus is in Jerusalem with his disciples, not long before he would be betrayed. Just before observing people express their faith by making monetary offerings to the Temple treasury, Jesus warned his disciples to avoid the hypocrisy of some of the religious scribes. Jesus noted that a number of them would recite lengthy prayers in order to receive both large monetary gifts and adulation and honor from other people. Jesus was highly critical of their life of show. In fact, he warned that people who do such things “will receive a very severe condemnation.”

This criticism is consistent with other parts of the Bible. For example, Jesus commends St. Nathaniel for his

honesty when he meets Jesus for the first time. There, which we can read in the second chapter of the Gospel of John, Jesus doesn’t mind that Nathaniel is blunt in wondering if anything good can come out of Nazareth. Jesus even calls Nathaniel “a true Israelite,” because there is no duplicity in him. The very word “Israel” itself means “to wrestle with God.” The Jewish people came from one of the twelve tribes that grew from the twelve sons of Jacob. Jacob had been renamed “Israel” by God after a full night of wrestling with the angel of the Lord. God is critical of hypocrisy but tremendously merciful toward honesty, especially when we acknowledge our need for God and for a true and living relationship with God – not just going through the motions with God.

May the Lord give us the encouragement we need to honestly and trustingly enter into a relationship with our savior, Jesus Christ, who wants to help us to be prepared for the gift of eternal life!
